I am relatively new to DND beyond. I do not see a way to add new proficiencies or languages learned via use of downtime days spent. Or a second background awarded by a DM due to my role-playing over the course of the campaign. The use of downtown days is allowed in the PHP and DMG. Is there a way to manually enter a new skill or language or a second background into DND beyond sheet? Is this available on DND beyond edits? Or is this not addressed in DND beyond. Or is this something being addressed in a future update?
Click on the relevant place on the sheet (typically the cog next to the name at the bottom of the box) and a side-bar will pop out. It will offer options to add new things.
I tried that. I am able to do that for equipment, gold, etc. but it will not allow it for adding skills, languages or another background. Unless I am doing it wrong.
Belay that. I did figure out how to add an additional language and skill proficiency.
i am still unable to add a second background (awarded after months of roleplay in the campaign by the dm).
If you click on the cog on the "Proficiencies and Languages" box on the main character sheet - the side-bar will pop out with a menu specifically designed for adding new proficiencies and languages.
Thank you Emmber. Got the language and skill figured out. Only thing I am still stuck on is adding a second background. It was quite unexpected, but the dm awarded it for the months of roleplay in campaign which he said justified it after use of the downtime and multiclassing.
If you care to read up on part of the backstory and adventure, you can check out my character FinEllen Stouthawker. She should be public. Read up under her backstory and then the notes section. It’s a waterd down version, but captures the basics of what happened.
As far as I'm aware it's not possible to add a second background. You would have to make a note of the feature it provides in the Notes section and change any proficiencies you may get from it manually.
That’s kinda what I figured. The 100 downtime days spent got the skill proficiency and taking the cleric domain got the tool proficiency. The roleplay tied it all together. The only real thing the dm awarded was a language proficiency due to the circumstances and way it came about, and the background for the feature award. Will just depend on notes, not that I’m likely to forget.
I just had a thought. You could always use the homebrew tools to make a new background that has the feature of both of your backgrounds and all the proficiencies included.
It probably wouldn't look great and it's not ideal but at least it would have both in the right place.
For new proficiencies, look for the light gray gear icon at the bottom of the Proficiencies & Languages and Skills.
In terms of another background, the rules aren’t set up for dual backgrounds. If you are changing backgrounds, that would be done in the builder. If this is a second background, you would need to add skills, etc. manually as I explained above; the “feature” note would need to be added to the notes section or one of the description areas, I think.
EDIT: another potential way to do the background feature would be to do it as a feat.

I figured that out. It seems like they would be able to set it up to add a second background for those strange one offs that occur from time to time. They have done it for every other aspect such as skills langueages, equipment, etc.
why wouldn’t they simply adapt it for backgrounds also?

Because because Rules as Written, 5th Edition doesn’t allow you to take multiple backgrounds. Awarding a second background is a cool concept that I’ve used before, but it’s not allowed if you go strictly by the book. In RAW D&D, there are several occurrences that will get you an additional language, skill, equipment, or tool proficiency. Most common way is downtime. But there is not RAW to get a second background, and D&D Beyond like to stick as close to the book as possible. So that’s why.

The same happens with the Skills box.
I assume you're looking somewhere else.
