Edit - didn't realise it was a deck of many things...thing. I like it, but should it be used with a level one group of four (experience role players).
If the group feels like going nuts with random craziness, then the deck of many things is fun for all levels. I'd strongly recommend that backup characters be on hand just in case.
It's worth noting that the avatar of death's HP is supposed to be equal to half its summoner's hit point maximum and that anyone who attacks someone else's avatar of death summons their own.

Is it just me or is the avatar of death really weak? The hp might scale to half the player's hp but the damage doesn't. To me it seems like any character over lvl 5 should easily be able to kill the avatar of death

True, true.

true sort of
it´s strong (fairly good auto hit, fairly good hp, high ac and defense against teaming making one of the harder encounters) but not very strong for an avatar of death

I've seen them used on, I think, three occasions in the last year. In all three, the avatar of death was not a serious challenge at all.
You might think that its automatic damage is scary, but 2d8+3 damage is nothing to most tier 2+ characters. They have more attacks, more damage potential and more HP than an avatar.
The avatar of Death, is only CR 0. I understand it only has one hit point, but with an AC of 20, it seems to be way tougher then CR 0.
Typo? Or working as intended?

You do not get XP for beating the avatar of death. You only fight the avatar of death if you draw the wrong card from the deck of many things. The avatar of death has no CR.
Edit: Ah, you figured it out.

Exactly! It doesn't seem dangerous at all! It's less like an avatar of death and more like an avatar of headaches
