just thinking in buying a tablet to play d&d online is it worth it is usefull? can be a cheap tablet so i dont expend much money? anyone ever tried this?
I have played D&D on a tablet a few times using roll 20. I am involved in an online campaign (was 2) did did not want to cry off when I was away from home if I could avoid it. In summary it might work as a player but roll 20 is really set up for desktops or at least laptops. If you are dming I do not think it is workable.
I have a galaxy s2.
I did not find a way of using beyond 20, I used a character sheet in roll 20
I also had discord open for chat, though that can run in the background
I set everything up on a desktop, so am not sure how easy things like creating your character sheet would be.
Switching tabs and finding what you want on or character sheet is a bit slower but not too bad.
I could not find a way of scrolling the map on roll 20 only zoom in and out. Not a huge problem I just had to ask the dm to re-centre the map occasionally.
It was pretty power hungry if you did not have the device plugged in full to zero charge was probably under 4 hours if you are into long games.
An inexpensive option like a Fire is a terrible terrible idea as it will not handle any of it... just seems like it would.
A top end tablet like a Surface Pro or an iPad will work just fine. If you have a chance to attach a bigger screen to it, you'll enjoy it more. Switching back and forth is just such a pain. If you want to try it out though, I would daresay your phone will handle it better than most tablets until you get to the high end just to see how it feels.

A cheap tablet probably won't like switching between tabs every time you want to make any sort of roll from your character sheet.
If you use Beyond20 to bridge DDB to R20, I think you can avoid having to switch apps since you can roll directly in Roll20 then.

One thing that will not work is using Beyond20 to bridge between D&D Beyond and Roll 20 using an iPad, since iPad does not allow desktop extensions.
Do the laptop, you will never be happy with d&d on a tablet (imo) my main laptop runs Linux and pretty happy with that solution.
