Thank you very much for the clarification. The latest dev update was also very helpful in getting things cleared up. Good luck to you! What I didn’t hear is who is responsible setting the roadmap and maintaining the direction? I don’t see how that key leadership function can be diffused out to the team, no matter how strong they are.
So you've worked for this community for 3 years, and you've never posted or interacted with the community. Why should we trust you as the new party face?

I'll clarify: I'm new to this position, but not new to tabletop, D&D, the TTRPG community, or making stuff in general. The opportunity to be a part of this team has been in the works for a while- check out Adam and I's chat from earlier this week.
As for trust, fair point! I haven't earned it yet- but I'd appreciate the chance to.
Just spend the last 2 hours reading 15 pages of posts, it was a epic journey that hasn't been seen since the likes Odysseus. Good luck to all that are leaving and welcome to all that are new. Looking forward to DDB new chapter. The one thing I found funny, is the people saying they might lose their content, am i the only one that prints out all the books they purchase here and puts them in a binder.
My major concern is that I have dropped a ton of money into this platform and pay for an ongoing subscription. I am not that interested in buying dice. I really want interoperability with VTT platforms or find that you are buying or making your own that can compete. Your first development update was 'please buy dice'. That worries me. BTW, I do think the dice are pretty, and I applaud the developers that have worked on these items. It is just that it is not what I want to spend money on in this site.
So I guess you watch like 1/10 of he update because if that is all you took away you apparently missed that this week they got the new class feats working, they are starting work on the general feature system so we can have better working character sheets, the life cleric feature getting worked on, and an explanation of some other features they are planning.
1 small fraction of the update was announcing the special subscriber dice and mentioning that they have a sale going on. But sure lets say the whole update was only about selling dice.

The roadmap has been set by the head of Engineering and the head of Product for Tabletop consistently for the last 2 years. As I said in my earlier post, Adam has been an influencer, a trusted partner and collaborator throughout that time but not the sole owner.
Hi! I'm Joe- happy to try and answer some of your questions.
To clarify a few that you already have: I was tapped to lead content for D&D Beyond, and with Todd and James' departures, means I'm currently working on building a new creative team to help me in those efforts! I am 100000000% not taking over Adam's role. Adam has spent the last few years building a really amazing team of people here, with those folks stepping into various leadership positions on the team.
The company isn't going anywhere- the same folks that have been busting their butts to make DDB great for you continue to bust butts!
That said, ask away- I'll do my best to answer!
First, I just want to say thanks for diving right into an ongoing torrent of wild speculation and baseless assumptions. It reassures me that at least on some level you share Adam's desire to reach out and be open and communicate with the community. Even when the community is being less than perfect.
Can you sneak into the back and find out when we will get the updated Steel Defender? (And i guess primal beast companions too... from Tasha's) Or at least how high / low on the priority list it is?
And for one you have a chance to answer: Favorite official campaign?

I feel like I never knew this either. I had quite the misconception of who does what at DDB... which might speak volumes for the positions or not...
1. What is the major goal for the development team for the next year?
2. Are you going to start your own game to stream?
What I CAN say for the dev team is that you're going to start meeting more and more of them in the Dev Update so they can start speaking to what's coming and give you a lot of context that me, a professional clown, can not hope to quantify. I know that 'stay tuned' is sort of a non-answer, but they're going to be able to start framing that vision for you on Thursdays better than I ever could.
As for a new campaign to stream, I've definitely got some plans in the books. The non-answers aren't me trying to be being coy, I swear- building a really cool slate of programming for y'all is my number one job and I want to make sure that everything we do, whether it's a streamed game or a rules primer, feels special.
So lets say you DO start a campaign...what lineage/class you want to play?

I think there's a bit of shock and even grief going around. It's a big change and we come to depend on familiarity more than we realize. So, I get it. I will see if I can get some answers for you by next week's Dev Update for that Steel Defender update.
As for campaigns, for 'recent' ones I like Strahd, mostly due to just loving Ravenloft. Also, random and probably due to recency bias, I just ran Dragons of Icespire peak for some new players, but made a small tweak: the Orcs that are causing problems in various quests are because the orc villages in the mountains were displaced by the dragon. So instead of being grunts and monsters, there's a massive refugee issue that the orcs and Phandalin are trying to figure out while trouble makers cause problems. It's added so much nuance to the campaign and I'm really loving it! The Butterskull Ranch adventure became a tense stand-off instead of a hack and slash.
What I want to know is if you'll post in the funny quotes thread from the Story & Lore forum like OboeLauren does.🙃

I’m not sure if this has been asked/answered but when the new roadmap comes out would it be possible to get a better description of what each portion means (so that newbies like be can better understand what they mean?
Lots of small things adding up the same way they did when the 4th ed tool stopped getting updates, stopped advertising, stopped sponsorships (which basically has happened.) etc.
if i lose access to all the "Legendary bundle" content i've bought here like i did with the 4th ed tool, i really hope WOTC and anyone else involved realizes we will not trust another Virtual Library toolset again.

The last developer update announcement was 6 days ago, a new article was dropped 30 minutes ago, and while I can't speak for sponsorships, there are numerous reasons why those might have slowed or stopped, not the least of which might be the global pandemic that has been going on for a year now. I'm not sure where you are coming from with this argument.
I'm sorry you lost content from 4th ed, but thats going to be the eventual case anytime the developer comes our with a new edition, and I'm sure it will happen with the inevitable 6th ed, whenever that comes. Its no different than Microsoft stopping support for Windows 95/XP or Apple stopping support for the iPod Mini.

It should be noted that Wizards maintained access to D&D Insider and all the tools until it was no longer possible due to Microsoft ending all support for silverlight, the web framework the tools were built on. This happened only recently (2020 I believe) so support was continued long beyond the end of the edition, and only ended due to technical reasons.
Welcome Joe!
I saw on some forum (maybe this one) that you're a stand-up comedian. Is this true?
I, too, dabble in public jestering. If it is true, is your stuff online anywhere?

You know the membership date is the day the account was made right? Not the day they were made staff?
Seeing as Joe is a well know content creator, I can see him not posting here, but now that he has an official context, he is now going to post.

I for one like the new change of pace, I hope it brings in a few things we've always wanted to see, other than "as things always have been".
I feel like I never knew this either. I had quite the misconception of who does what at DDB... which might speak volumes for the positions or not...
Really liked the multiple people in the dev update, hope you continue doing that.
And we love dice too but as a DM, we are desperate for updates to the encounter builder/combat tracker.
So lets say you DO start a campaign...what lineage/class you want to play?
Also: Welcome!

Welcome and Godspeed, Joe - can't wait to see what some fresh blood brings to the table.
This is my DnDBeyond Account. There are many like it, but this one is mine.
