In a game I am participating in (PBP), I have recently become aware of something interesting.
The party is in a dungeon, doing the dungeon thing.
Apparently one of the players knew that if you participate in other events (PvP, RP, whatever) your PC gains exp. I didn't know about this and the campaign is a couple weeks old so I missed out on opportunities and I was not alone in not knowing about this bonus exp business. The party is at 250 exp and that PC is at 300.
I don't know the details but it seems that if you are able to post more often, you get more chances at getting bonus exp. Naturally, the person that can't play a lot quit as he saw this as unfair. The reply was that nothing is stopping anybody from doing these side activities. Except the fact that some folks just can't post every hour of the day.
I'm not leaving the campaign as I find it interesting and fun, but I also do not have time to post a lot in threads not campaign related.
What are your thoughts on this extra exp for extra posting?

Regardless of the specifics, any kind of xp gain all players don't have equal access to or equal opportunity to acquire is a no-no. 250 xp vs 300 xp is not a big deal, but in the long run it'll lead to players being an entire level behind and that's taking it too far.

The PC in question is on the dungeon quest with everyone else, yet is also doing other events outside of the dungeon quest and getting the XP?
If that is the case, then the DM shouldnt allow such. You honestly cant be doing the dungeon quest at the same time as anything else because your character is already engaged in the dungeon quest.
Now, if they did the activities before the dungeon quest, then that wouldnt be an issue, unless, all the characters started questing at the same time and entered the dungeon at the same time, which then brings us back to the point above.
Same goes if doing stuff that they then says happens after, cant add the XP, and loot, to the character for events that aint taken place until after the dungeon quest.

That is entirely up to the DM. I would not allow someone to take a character from my campaign, run it through something else, and then come back into my campaign with the additional XP. You have only the XP you earned in my campaign, unless we have for some reason agreed otherwise (I would probably never agree otherwise).
This is not an MMORPG. You don't gain objective experience for doing things with the same character in multiple games. You only gain the XP the DM says you gain. Period.
Nothing is stopping you from just editing your character to be 20th level right now, if you want, for example. But the DM almost certainly won't (and absolutely should not) allow it.

WOTC lies. We know that WOTC lies. WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. We know that WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. And still they lie.
Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.

It is the GM's idea. There is no way to justify the rewards (in a normal campaign). PCs post actions in the dungeon and also in the alternate threads and get exp for both - literally playing the same PC in multiple locations simultaneously. The thing that brought it to light was one PC getting to level 2 while everybody else was level 1. The gains were due to a player having time to post on multiple threads throughout the day.
Two players have left due to this tilted playing field. I'm going to stick it out for a bit to see just how much it matters.

I'm concerned about the part where not everyone knew about this practice being allowed. How did that person know but multiple other people didn't? If the DM is going to do something like this (in a way that's fair to people who can't be on forums constantly, like bonus XP for more detailed RP, even if it's only once or twice a day, not going through the dungeon multiple times on different threads), it's the kind of thing that should be covered in a session zero such that the DM is confident that everyone is aware of it and has ways to join in that will work for them. The DM not telling anyone about it and just ticking off bonus XP in their head is one thing, but some people -- possibly only one person? -- knowing and others not is the bigger issue, I feel. Did they explain that?

Nobody knew until "Hey, how come he's lvl 2 and we're not, when you said the exp split was 250 each?"
At that point two players left. So for two weeks of daily posting, nobody said anything. Or half the players in the game totally missed something that was clear at the start.

Plus the DM not following up after only one person is taking advantage of the opportunity to get extra XP.

Hmm..
Ok, just to get this straight.

Well, I applaud your stick-to-it-iveness but I would be out the door in a situation like this.

That's definitely a red flag. There is a good reason that 5e has "Inspiration" and that DM Inspiration caps at (1).
