Thank you for the clarification. This was very helpful. These are actually the main reasons I use it. It's mostly an accessibility thing for me. I personally didn't care if I had to home brew stuff because I already do that. Granted it's super exciting not to have to. I guess l have to figure out if I make my own rules shortcuts or something 😔
For those asking about rules/references on the character sheet, the update says this
We are not changing players’ current character sheets, except for relabeling and renaming. Examples include Races to Species, Inspiration to Heroic Inspiration, and Cast Spell to Magic.
That seems to be a clear statement to me that the character sheet will continue to show the 2014 rules both on the sheet itself and in tooltips. Now, they could be lying and/or misleading us, and they certainly don't have our trust at the moment, but taken at face value there should not be any significant changes to the sheet rules.
Hopefully we'll get more details in the next few days, ideally with a preview of what the sheets will look like, and not have to wait until they've already switched, but for the moment it seems that for 2014 players things should be more or less unchanged (other than using the legacy toggle).
Can we please get confirmation that character sheets/character creation will operate exactly as they do now, with tooltips displaying 2014 rules, monsters showing 2014 spells, and the entire toolset, encounter builder, etc working as it does now?
The wording of the latest announcement worries me that there are some things that might still be changing. I can live with Inspiration being named as Heroic Inspiration for example, but the devil is in the detail. Is anything else being hidden or conveniently not mentioned now to quieten the 'vocal minority' in the short term?
This is my main issue with this change as well. I've been using this since 2019 and have come to rely on the tool tips. I don't want to constantly go and lookup the the rules in the book or do searches for what I could just click on before. I was so excited when I started using this service because it took away a lot of stress.

Very valid concerns! At this point, we don't have answers that will satisfy these questions (that doesn't mean they're answers you won't want to hear—we truly don't know!) but are working to get these clarifications.

The announcement of the upcoming maintenance being delayed makes me think the Occam's Razor explanation of all this is that it was more technical hassle to have all the 2014 spells and magic items remain integrated in the updated character sheets and the decision makers thought it wouldn't be worth the effort. That makes me wonder about the workforce, time crunch, etc. but I'm probably extrapolating too much already.
Anyways, glad we'll still have the spells and stuff; it was gonna be a major pain in campaigns that aren't switching over.
Hey all, we've heard your feedback and have published an article outlining our plan going forward. You can read it here. Thank you!
I appreciate this though clarifying that tooltips descriptions and any other 2014 links that are part of the character sheet will still be there would be appreciated by many of us as well. As that too is part of the issue on whether the builder works for us.
Thank you for addressing so many concerns as of today! Holding my resub at least until I see the sheet for myself (still don't really trust this to not happen for real next time, and i've already spent so much on this site), but appreciate that our wishes are being considered.
I love how *just* like the walk-back statement for this mirrors the walk-back from the OGL, by blaming us, the consumers.
"Our excitement around the 2024 Core Rulebooks led us to view these planned updates as welcome improvements and free upgrades to existing content."
It's *our* fault that these weren't "welcome improvements and free upgrades", lmao. How about you ASK your customers before you pull this stuff next time. Also, This statement tries to hide the fact that this was clearly a move to encourage people to spend money on the new source books as a cash grab. Your "excitement" was trying to con people into spending more money for something they already paid for, *and* make us do more work on top of it.
I guess I missed the date in all of the churn. When are the new changes ( whatever those are ) goin into production? I would like to buy more access, but I will only do so if they are not going to fornicate me and my current campaign characters. I hear that they are not, but in the words of the little old lady in our Nuclear group loved to tell me with a wry smile... "Trust but verify!"

I have the similar concern, but for different reasons. I am wanting to move forward with the 2024 rules and was happy that the tool tips were being automatically updated so that all my homebrew would be updated with the new spells. Now I'm not sure what's going to happen with tool tips. Hopefully, the team will address this issue too. I have faith though.
I'm happy that a reasonable solution for character sheets was made that benefits all. I'm just hoping the same will be made with tool tips. I'm sure people who want to use 2014 would rather their homebrew be unchanged. From my fox hole I would prefer that my homebrew will be updated. Hopefully there is a solution for all.

And a sudden change in direction with required development (and testing) going live in a week never, ever, slips schedule.
I'm sure they'll have the compendium content up. Whether it'll be in the character builder is not something I'd put money on.

How are their no answers on this? early access starts in a week. by then everything has to be on the site so unless the plan is to not test anything and puch it to live and hope how is there not a plan for this yet?

I mean... different from 5e14, the new edition book will be just released now. That should not mean the platform (tool set) should be ready to use, mainly because:
Without the other core books (DMG and MM) this new edition is basically incomplete. You will be playing with new edition characters against old edition monsters and the DM will have old edition guidelines, not balanced at all. So I, personally, don't get the rush to play an incomplete system.
Players and DMs should take their time to read the book/compedium before starting creating sheets or playing. (That's just my opinion tho)
It's a bit selfish (not saying that you are or that is what you think) to impair 5e14 players just to experience 5e24 a bit earlier. Patience, and everything will be set eventually, hopeful, for everyone being able to play the edition they prefer, without detriment to others. I know this a promise the WoTC made, but they should not.
Videogames have earlier access, they should stop treating TTRPGs as videogames...

The strategy changed just over 24 hours ago, so you might have to be a bit more patient
Like that’s a fair point in a way… but it somewhat overlooks that waiting til a week before early access to finally reveal their plans for DDB, despite people begging them for months to be more up front and transparent, wasn’t the best decision on WotC’s side and the very short time window they now have to respond is ENTIRELY on them and their own terrible habits concerning customers communication.

Thank you for giving us the option to use 2014 spells/magic items. Now...can we have a la carte back? Please.

Yes, but that was expected tomorrow, a whole week ahead of the release. That still leaves a week for everything to go through as planned.
