Dmitri begins "What... *yawn*... I don't... *blink blink*... no, the Queen... zzzzzzzz" and slumps to the ground, snoring. Zithers, standing unnoticed in the corner, also falls asleep. Malichi and Amelia between them manage to safely catch the chrysalis as it tumbles from the quickling's grasp, and they lower it to the ground.
Snapdragon appears, panting and wings straining, with Parsnip slumped over her shoulder, flying slowly and lands clumsily on the branch. Both she and the sprite end up flat on their backs. The dagger is still embedded in Parsnip's chest, but he is breathing, for the moment. The pixie's eyes are wet with tears as she lays gasping, recovering from the flight.
If no one has any better option, Zensiro can produce a goodberry (or ten) to help revive poor Parsnip. He will also make sure that Dmitri is bound tightly before doing anything else. "Brilliant work, Cerlinde, just what we needed! And well done Snapdragon, saving Parsnip like that is a remarkable feat. I wish we could have done more to help with that! At least we've managed to wrangle Dmitri and preserve the chrysalis."
As Zensiro administers the healing fruit to the unconscious sprite, Snapdragon kneels beside him, weeping, repeating something in Sylvan over and over.
I'm sorry! I was so stupid! Please don't leave me, Parsnip. I... I love you!
As the goodberry takes hold and the magic begins to repair Parsnip's body, the healing wound pushes the dagger out, and it falls to the side. Startled, the pixie lays her head on his chest, listening for a heartbeat.
Meanwhile, the other party members have hogtied Dmitri, and loaded the chrysalis into AGGE.
(So, possible next steps: decide what you want to do with the chrysalis and the three fey, decide if anyone else (Dyumi?) wants to complete a quest. You can continue to explore the outdoors. You can head back to Amos and collect your rewards. You can also decide to return to Erastus' dwelling and hope to attract his attention. Or something else, your choice)
(Zensiro is thinking that hopefully Snapdragon has learned her lesson and that she and Parsnip will return w/the chrysalis to the Feywild, just as we hoped to accomplish. As for Dmitri, they can either return him, or maybe he'd agree to stay here in Haven, which might be a safer outcome for him. I'll be travelling all day tomorrow, but I wanted to give the rest of the party a chance to give some input. After dealing w/these three, I'm up for whatever the party - or DM - wants to do.)
“Thank you. I don’t want anyone to suffer. But this is precious and needs to be brought to Amos soon. Are there other things we want to do out here?” Cerlinde seems a bit anxious to get back, looking with concern at the Chrysilis
You hear Malichi grunt and look over to see him crawling out of the bag of holding. "If anyone needs help finishing their quest, I'm in" he tells you "but if we're done I'd like to the see Amos then head to Erastus and find a way to get big again"
Parsnip wakes up after a couple more berries, and tries to speak but Snapdragon keeps either hugging him so tight he can't breathe or covering his mouth with kisses. Finally he pries her loose long enough to look around, and notice Dmitri tied up and snoring.
In Common, he says, "Well, I suppose you'll be wanting to take us in, too, but we'll come willingly, no need to tie us. We'll take whatever punishment the queen sees fit. At least with Snap, she'll probably be forgiven pretty quickly."
Glancing at Dmitri, he says, "It will not go so well with that one. I don't know what will be worse for him, languishing in Titania's dungeons, or the welcome he will receive from his own Mistress if sent back there. It might be kindest to him to let him stay here, although he would just cause more trouble for you in the future. He's a bad egg, I'm afraid."
Through further conversation, you discover that they don't have the power to return to the Feywild themselves, but Snapdragon is able to communicate with someone at the court, who will relay their predicament to whomever can help. In the meantime, they agree to return to Amos' abode with you.
You all re-enter AGGE, Dmitri trussed up and secured in the back with the luggage, and head back down the treetrunk and back to the southwest, around the vegetable garden. It's a long drive, but you make it back to the tunnel by nightfall, and then to the familiar round green door around 10 pm.
Zensiro hops out of the AGGE and quietly taps on the big green door, recognizing the late hour. "If anyone would know what to do with the three of you, it would be Amos. Fortunately, he seems to be quite the host and very accommodating. I just hope we're not inconveniencing him too much at this hour."
The doorknob eyeballsleepily opens, glances at you, and closes as the door swings open silently. There is not room to maneuver AGGE into the dwelling, so you leave it parked in the main tunnel, retrieving Dmitri from the back and dragging him in with you. Two of your party also very carefully carry the chrysalis. From down the hall, you hear Amos' voice talking to someone, but there is an odd tone, that you haven't heard from him before, a tone of... deference, maybe?
"Come in, friends, come in!" booms the brigganock from up ahead, "Come join us!"
As you proceed forward, pulling and shoving the grumbling quickling, you once again enter into the cozy round living room of your mouselike friend and benefactor. Amos is seated in his comfy chair, and beside him in another chair sits a female fey of radiant beauty.Snapdragon immediately drops into a deep curtsy, and Parsnip falls to his knees, his forehead practically touching the ground.
Amos stands, and says, "My queen, I woulds like to introduce my friends to ye. Mays I present Zensiro 'n Cerlinde, of the Elven people, and Amelia who shares some o' that fey blood. Over here's Malichi the tiefling, and that is Zithers the gnome, and in the back is Dyumi the firbolg. And I sees they has brought some others with 'em, which I does not know."
Dmitri starts to say something angry and disrepectful, but at the first syllable, Amos absent-mindedly points at him, and all sound ceases though his mouth continues to move.
Amos' companion's eyes flash for a brief second at the quickling, but then they soften into a smile. She stands and crosses to the two genuflecting fey, and touches each on the shoulder. In a melodious voice that simply sounds like summer, she says, "This is Snapdragon, a lady of my court. And this brave young warrior is Parsnip, her bodyguard. That one I know not," she says, indicating the quickling. "And I.... am Titania. I have sent my avatar to pay a visit to my good friend, Amos."
"That was bloody weird," Amelia remarks. She looks over at Zensiro. "You clearly have more experience with fey than I do. Are they all like that?"
Zensiro looks back at Amelia, smiles, and replies quietly in Primordial, "Well, I don't want to be overly broad in characterizing the fey, but I've generally found that they can be rather dramatic. These three certainly match the stereotype!"
Zensiro bows deeply and takes a knee as well following the introduction. He haltingly stammers out a few sentences, attempting to summon the appropriate reverence and flattery for the Queen of the Summer Court. "I had not dared dream that I would have a chance to meet you, my most fair queen! Your beauty surpasses even the tales of the most eloquent bards. I am Zensiro, a humble servant of the High Lady Ordalf of the kingdom of Sarifal, and by extension, your servant as well. On her behalf, I am honoured to convey the High Lady's most sincere regards." He peeks up, hoping he has spoken well and eager to have another glance at her otherworldly beauty. "We hope that we have served you admirably in helping to safely bring the chrysalis to this place. It is our greatest pleasure to return it to you."
Malichi follows Zensiro's lead and bows, then takes a knee. Otherwise he's going to keep his mouth shut and watch till he feels he has a better idea of what's going on.
"My greetings and my thanks to all of you. Amos has told me much of your bravery and of your peculiar predicament. Please rise, all of you. Despite my friends' overzealous reactions, I am only a visitor to this realm, not its ruler. No, this world lies far outside my demesne. In fact, it was a particular struggle to send my avatar here, which makes me want to question that one later," Titania here briefly glances at Dmitri, "to discover how he managed to flee here with such apparent ease."
The quickling silently mouths something unpleasant.
"Ugh," she continues, "I've half a mind to send you back to my sister, and let you spout your insolence in front of the Throne of the Night Diamond. I doubt you would survive.
"As I was saying, my power is very limited across this great gulf that divides my realm and the one you all currently occupy. I'm afraid returning you to your former statures without fully understanding the manner in which you were miniaturized is not within my present capabilities in your world. I have, however, discussed with Amos, a small compensation for your service to me in returning these precious things, the very least of which is the chrysalis." The faerie queen waves her hand, encompassing the sprite and the pixie as well as the rare butterfly's cradle.
"It is in my power to bring these home, but no more. However, if you should at some future time escape your plane and travel to the Feywild, you will always be welcome at the Summer Court. Even you, little one," she says, looking directly at Malichi. Glancing at Amos with a twinkle in her eye, Titania continues, "I have heard much of your devotion and service to our friend, the Lady of Luck, and wish you to come and visit me that I may learn more of the adventures of Malichi the rogue, straight from the tiefling's mouth, as it were."
In a very ancient, formal Elvish, she says to Zensiro, Cerlinde and Amelia:
"Zensiro, I accept your service and please return my greetings to my fair cousin, Ordalf. It has been too long since I looked in on her.
"My children, I am proud of you. Though you do not hail from my realm directly, I care for all my scattered kin through all the planes... even those that have fallen into darkness. My gratitude and my blessing rest upon you, though you have little need of it. You also are welcome to visit, anytime, when you can. Your names will be had in honor among us, your extended family."
Next in Sylvan, she addresses Snapdragon and Parsnip:
"Speak your farewells, younglings. It is time to come home."
Finally, Titania turns back to Amos. "What is your opinion on what I should do with that one?"
He raises an eyebrow, and turns to look at the party. "Well? What say ye? Ye know his actions better 'n old Amos..."
Zensiro bows even more deeply, beaming with pride and gratitude, and addresses Titania. "I will pass your greetings along as soon as I am able. Thank you for this great honour you have bestowed upon us!" He looks up at Amos and says, "I imagine that you know Haven better than any of us. From what I know, quicklings are difficult, but perhaps he may not cause too much trouble in Haven? Or could he be reformed with the proper tutelage? In spite of his misdeeds, I have some qualms with sending him to certain torment at the Gloaming Court."
Amelia takes a moment to mentally translate the Elvish into the version she speaks. After some consideration, she says in Elvish, "I thank you, Your Majesty. Unfortunately, as you know, we're rather stuck here, and even if we weren't, I've no idea how I'd even reach the Feywild. I'll keep it in mind if I ever find myself there, though."
She turns to Amos. "At the core of it, he wanted better for his people. Being fed up with mistreatment is hardly a wildly selfish act, even if the way he went about doing something about it was pretty wrong. I'm not sure what a good punishment would be for him, but it shouldn't be too harsh."
Malichi raises his hand "Quick question your Incredibleness. Do you know if there are any other Quicklings in Haven? He seems none too happy with the Fey world. Time here alone, among strangers, he might start to appreciate what he has. I'd even volunteer to help him get settled in"
Amos turns back to the queen, and they seem to be having a conversation although no words are uttered.
Meanwhile, Parsnip formally grips hands with each of you, while Snapdragon throws her arms around your necks for tight squeezes. Parsnip says, "Our thanks, friends, for saving us from our own folly, and for helping us get back where we belong. We hope to see you again." Then the two walk back to Titania, waiting for her to finish.
The Mistress of the Summer Court stands, and says, "Dmitri of the Quicklings, hear your doom and fate. You are hereby banished from the Feywild and exiled to this plane known as Haven for a period of three years. At the end of this time, you may appear before us in our court, along with someone who is familiar with your most recent behavior, and apply for readmittance. If there has been no change in attitude or behavior by that time, the doom shall be made permanent, and you will never return to the Feywild again, upon pain of immediate execution. "We are aware that three years is a considerable span in the lifetime of your people, therefore out of mercy, and also to limit the potential for your mischief, the curse of my sister is also temporarily lifted for this three year period. Your body and mind will be slowed to match the pace of those around you, and your life accordingly lengthened. If you are reinstated in time in the Feywild, and it is your wish, then your former condition will be restored to you.
"Should you choose not to accept our judgment in this matter, you will immediately be returned to the Gloaming Court. In that case, if you should ever be encountered in our realms again, you will be imprisoned and executed. Do you understand? How do you choose? You are permitted to speak."
The quickling starts to speak rapidly, then stops, then starts again, making an effort to speak at a normal pace. "Mighty Queen, the rumors of your goodness and mercy are all proven true. My heart is still full of rage at both Seelie and Unseelie alike, and the injustice of my people's plight threatens to burn a hole right through me. However, by your leave, I do not choose to perish at this time, and perhaps here in Haven, away from the Courts and intrigues of the Feywild, I can eventually quiet the anger within. I thank you for this chance for peace. I submit to your will."
Titania nods, and extends her hand, and a sparkling cloud surrounds the quickling, lifting him off his feet. After a heartbeat or three he is set back upon the ground, and he definitely seems not as agitated or fidgety.
She then bids all of you farewell, gathers the sprite, the pixie, and the chrysalis to her, and they all disappear in a burst of sparks, rainbow colors and ethereal butterflies.
