Modoc will go with the others if they are doing any shopping or other errands. But at some point he'll want to go to the train station to learn what he can about trains. Like the arrangement of cars, what the crews look like and their job functions, and maybe just people watch for a while.
Eirikur will lead his group through the various shopping areas of Chicago. Making time for the crew to fill their own checklists of items, he will be looking to fill his own as well. That list will be as follows:
1 extra length of rope (1g)
1 grappling hook (2g)
3 bottles if oil (3s)
4 bells (4g)
1 crowbar (1g)
1 bag of caltrops (1g)
1 set of manacles (2g)
2 door stops (??!)
1 hunting trap (5g)
1 bag of flour (counter for invisible people) (??)
topographical maps that run the train route from Chicago to Dodge City and a map case to hold them in (1g + cost of maps)
I'd say Modoc would end up at the library. Modoc would try to kill two birds with one stone and look up Dr. Bailey and a bit about trains. He'd rely heavily on the librarians' suggestions as researching isn't his strong suit.
After the Chicago fire of 1871 a pair of notable citizens ask England for book donations. This endeavor succeeds and the Chicago public library was opened in an old water tank in 1873
Modoc learns that Dr. Bailey is the inventor of I.C.E. and the Omni-Enhancer. The latter device once affixed to the base of your skull produce a similar effect of the Haste spell. The Omni- Enhancer never caught on the same as I.C.E due to the negative effect that set in after the increased speed wore off.
In the past year Dr. Bailey has transitioned away from such devices and has focused on Alchemy.
In regard to trains, you learn about the rail wars between Hellstromme industries and Ashline corporation. In the end Hellstromme industries won the rail wars and is the only manufacturer of trains. The trains run on ghost rock so an ever-present wail can be heard if you are standing in the driver's compartment.

Oh, I missed the bottom questions. Bag of flour 2 cp. The map is 10 gp for each state. 40gp in total. Door stop 1 cp each.
The map tells you that the train will head west through Illinois then through the southern tips of Iowa and Nebraska before entering Kansas.
OOC: My bad. I had been checking several times a day, but I guess I should have spoken up to bring attention to it; I generally have been taught that I wait for the DMs approval before making changes to things like inventory, even for mundane items, in case the DM had an encounter planned for shopping events.
IC: Once Eirikur will have found the items he was hoping to get, and everyone else would have finished their own preparations for the trip, he will have accompanied Modoc to the library. There is nothing in particular that would be of interest to him there. Mostly, Eirikur will just want to be present; his group had casually entered Mr. Harrington's law office and anyone who might want to harm Dr. Baily may be aware of his associates, including Mr. Harrington. Eirikur, being fully aware how that knowledge could be leveraged by picking off or sandbagging one of the people hired to protect Dr. Baily even before the mission begins, will want to keep the group together as much as possible.
He keeps his distance, allowing Modoc to prepare in study however he feels best, but he is present and wanders the open room, listlessly reading the text on the spines of the books as he strolls by. Occasionally he will lean against the railing and watch the people to see if anyone is watching his party and other times, he will pour over the maps that he had purchased to memorize the route, surrounding area, and identify places where the train itself would be vulnerable to attack; train stations, areas where the tracks run along mountain ranges, cross rivers, or areas where it would be easy for villains to get aboard the train while it is moving without being seen.
"I'll have to ask Dr. Bailey about this Omni-Enhancer. I wonder he has any spares?" Modoc says to the other members of the group after he shares what he learned. "The librarian was very nice and patient when explaining it all to me. I'm afraid they were worried about what I'd do. They did look at me like I was a bull in a china shop."
Eirikur regards Modoc a moment, a coy smile creeping across his lips. "Indeed." Eirikur says while shelving a book he had pulled out to lazily flip through as he waited. "What did you learn?"
"He's gotten into alchemy since inventing that Omni-Enchancer and I.C.E. Do you know anything about alchemy? Maybe either Henry or Gaelan knows something about it." Modoc replies to Eirikur.
Gaelen recalls that Alchemy is about the transformative process of using base ingredients to produce alchemical products. Such as transforming lead into gold and the fanciful tale of concoctions granting the drinker longevity.

Magic items are rare and are worth a fortune.

Modoc would also suggest to the group that they should learn more about Dr. Bailey.
How would you like to learn more about DR. Bailey?
Head to the library and look through old issues of the Chicago Tribune, head to Northwestern University, or some other method?

A bit of history
After the Chicago fire of 1871 a pair of notable citizens ask England for book donations. This endeavor succeeds and the Chicago public library was opened in an old water tank in 1873
The librarian gives Modoc several scientific articles and published research books. The scientific terminology can be difficult to understand.
Modoc, please roll Intelligence Check DC 14
This isn't going to go well: 16 Intelligence
Not bad, for a barbarian that shouldn't have passed that roll.

Erikur looks around the Chicago Public Library and finds no one is paying any particular attention to the party.
"He's gotten into alchemy since inventing that Omni-Enchancer and I.C.E. Do you know anything about alchemy? Maybe either Henry or Gaelan knows something about it." Modoc replies to Eirikur.
Gaelan gets a thoughtful look on his face trying to recall any useful information, "Mmmm,..let me think.."
