Holding back a full on guffaw at Sharn calling out Seras faux pas, he almost succeeds except for a wad of snot the strings out of his nose, which he promptly wipes on his sleeve and moves up to the trap Hastos nearly triggered.
Watching how much Kasi is enjoying the play on words Merkas smiles along but after a bit he quiets down and gets serious "That is funny Gramma, you think there are many more traps like that? Or will they be all different?"
Kasi get's serious at the question, and her eyes pop open wide in remembrance. "waaaaaiiit!" she whispers harshly and holds up a desperate hand.
Everyone please roll Perception or Investigation checks as you approach the wall on the north side of the cave.
Sera watched as the group uncovered a hidden iron door set into the ceiling of the cave. It was an unusual placement—something about it felt off. Were kobolds truly that creative, or was this some kind of trick?
She frowned, tilting her head as she examined the crude craftsmanship of the door. “Is it meant to be found so easily?” she muttered, more to herself than anyone else. “Feels like we’re supposed to notice it… Maybe so we get a bucket of vipers in our faces the second we open it.”
Her fingers tightened around her sword hilt as she stepped closer to Hastos, her blade casting its bright glow over the metal surface. “What do you think?” she asked him, keeping her voice low. “Trap? Ambush? Or just really bad kobold craftsmanship?”
She exhaled slowly, then murmured a quiet prayer for his success, whether it was for disarming a trap, dodging whatever nasty surprise might come, or simply making the right call.
( give Hastos another Guidance)
She are very aware after Sharns comment and try focus good on her surroundings.
At Kasi’s warning, Hastos crouches down behind his shield and waits, looking around for any threats or possible traps.
Investigation: 10 +1 + 3 (Guidance) = 14
“Hard to tell.” Hastos replies quietly. “While the mechanisms are crude, the traps seem to be designed to take advantage of people underestimating their intelligence. So it could be a feint, or a trap in a trap. Does this plate trigger one, or prevent one from being triggered? There’s no way to tell. I’m glad Kasi’s with us.”
Once Kasi gets the party to halt, she leans in close and whispers. Her voice is raspy and harsh to imply the danger Hastos is in. "Big trap. Nasty... No escape. Must disarm." She points to regions along the wall where some of the moss has been smeared. In dim light, it wouldn't have even been noticeable, but the light from Sera's sword makes it glow faintly. They form runes in draconic.
Merkas stops moving entirely, standing still like a statue half through a step, the glowing copy of himself doing the same thing."Um, can I put my foot down?" He assumes he's safe to do so when Kasi moves over to the wall. He follows behind to watch and learn the things she's doing "Y'know, I always just found ways around them, but this one has no way around? That's almost mean, be worse if there was no way to disarm it, then how would they get in and out of their own tunnels"
Sharn stopped. Kasi was proficient, more so than he could've imagined. He didn't see the trap, but heeded all of the warnings regardless. If anything, he had a smirk under his mustache. No other resident of Santekh could've dealt with the traps so well. Once again, the dirt was right. Perhaps, after his eyes cleared from the dirt he accidentally rubbed on them, the soil would divinate their next step, or perhaps he would have to meditate thoroughly after they finish their current mission.
Sera’s sharp eyes caught something just as they were about to move forward. The pressure plates along the north wall were obvious enough—too obvious. But it was the glowing blue runes that truly sent a chill down her spine.
“Wait!” she blurted, perhaps a bit too loud, her voice echoing slightly in the cavern. She immediately lowered it, but urgency remained in her tone. “The runes on the wall… I think the pressure plates are just a distraction. This is the real trap.”
She swallowed hard. Gero had tried—really tried—to teach her about runes and magical wards, but back then, her mind had been more suited for swordplay than studying the complexities of arcane symbols. Now, she wished she had paid better attention. ( arcana 1)
“I don’t know what they do,” she admitted, shifting uncomfortably. “But they feel magic… and bad.” Her grip on her sword tightened. “Maybe we should find another way around?”
Then, another thought hit her, making her stomach drop.
At Sera's words about the pressure plates, Merkas moves over to them and looks them over some more"These are part of the trap, guessing not the worst part but need to be dealt with" He starts pulling out coins and carefully sliding them under the various edges to keep them elevated. "Ok so don't know what the runes and all that mean but, if we walk carefully, we can move across these without tripping them. would be nice to get the coins back on the way back out though"After setting the coins, his pouch lighter for it, Merkas waits for Kasi to give the ok and gingerly moves across the plates to show the others where to step. (Stealth 19)
Sera mentions a spellcaster and the kender pauses and looks at her."Aww crap, we don't have one with us this time. Gonna have to talk to Verhanna about recruiting someone to help with that. Hope we stay away from them on this trip"
As Merkas steps onto the plate, the moss-rune glows brighter, then and dies out.
Kasi's eyes nearly pop out of her head in surprise. "RUN!"
You start to hear a strange clicking sound working down the length of the hallway. The next rune starts to glow with an even more intense brightness. Down the hall, you see a ladder to the second floor. Above it is the face of a dragon carved into the natural stone, with its mouth open.
“What, no it wasn’t my fault, wait, ooops”The words no one wants to hear a kender say leap from Merkas’ mouth in rapid succession before he breaks into a sprint, towards the ladder, diving like a baseball player into home plate, hoping to get under whatever attack is incoming.
It was as if time slowed down in Sharn's mind when he heard Kasi's warning shout. For a brief moment, his focus was pure and unbreakable. He leaped to the side, becoming a dense ball of momentum in the air. Once he dropped on the ground, he maintained his compressed roundish shape. Hopefully, the end of the hallway would put enough distance between him and whatever inferno was oncoming.
(Using a focus point and step of the wind for that extra oomph)
Hastos and Sera watched Merkas jam up the trap plates and were contemplating the mysterious runes along the cave corridor when out of the corner of their eye they see Merkas begin walking across the plates!
Hastos reaches out to grab Merkas, but is too late, and Merkas strides across triggering the runic trap. A split second later he hears Kasi’s alarmed voice cry “run”!
Hastos looks back to see which direction Kasi seems to be running in, but can hear Merkas’ footfalls heading down the corridor towards the ladder..
Merkas, as always, paid absolutely no heed to Sera’s warning. With an infuriating mix of confidence and recklessness, he simply went over, jammed the trigger plates, and carried on like nothing was wrong—except he got way too close to the glowing runes.
Kasi’s voice cut through the moment like a whip. “RUN!”
The kender blinked in confusion. “What? No, it wasn’t my fault, wait—ooops.”
That was never a good sign. Not coming from a kender.
Before Sera could process anything else, Sharn was already a blur, bolting past her so fast she felt the draft of his passing. Her heart pounded, survival instincts kicking in as raw adrenaline surged through her veins.
Run.
She didn’t need to be told twice. Spinning on her heel, she turned and sprinted back the way they’d come, jumping over the resently discovered trap behind them.
As Hastos turns to look at Kasi, Sera wastes no time sprinting back the way they came. Hastos is torn between going back the way they came or running after Merkas. He doesn’t want to abandon Merkas but doesn’t feel he has time to reasonably weigh the alternatives.
without waiting on a cue from Kasi, Hastos yells “Back!” and bolts back down the way they came on the heels of Sera. With each step Hastos lets out an exasperated word. “Why.”

After disabling the first trap, setting off the glowing runes, Merkas makes a mad dash for the ladder, stepping on the second, third, and fourth trap! Darts fly towards Merkas's ribs.

”THAT?”
Hastos dives towards Sera just in time, as hot flames bathe the hallway in a blinding fury! The flames carry on for several seconds before dissipating. Then as the light dims down, all that remains is the glow from Sera's sword. From her vantage point, Sera can see the faint glow of the first rune start to come back, as the sound of cranking gears and popping noises resets the trap.
Kasi's eyes are wide with fear, and she huddles in the darkness.

Sera barely had time to register the dragon-head trap before it roared to life. A wave of fire erupted from its mouth, flooding the passage behind her in an inferno that could have easily incinerated her if she’d been a second slower.
She stumbled, eyes widening at the sheer force of it. It was like a dragon’s breath weapon—a real one. Some whispered that dragons had returned to the world, but she had never seen one. Maybe one day… A metallic dragon, if she was lucky.
No time for that now.
The flames died down, and in the eerie silence that followed, she heard no screams of the dying. Just the soft, fearful whimpering of Kasi, the small kobold curled up against the wall, trembling.
Sera exhaled sharply. The runes along the trap were already glowing again, shifting, the mechanisms inside clicking as they reset. If she didn’t move now, it would trigger again.
Hastos had followed her, but there was no time to explain. The damn kender had somehow sprinted ahead, leaving them behind in his usual reckless fashion.
Grimacing, Sera scooped up Kasi with her shield arm, tucking the kobold protectively against her side behind her shield “Hold on!”
Then she ran.
She pushed her legs harder than ever before, trying to copy that irritatingly lucky kender’s speed and destination. She had only seconds—either she made it through, or she’d meet her end in a final, blazing mistake. ( str+ath 19 for bolting after Merkas carrying Kasi with me. Unsure if I need dex saves too but got 7, 15, 5 )
Sharn, Hastos, and Sera narrowly escape the trap, but you hear a shout of pain when Merkas gets hit by one of the darts, then a few seconds of silence before the flame blasts the hallway. As the fire subsides, you hear cranking sounds and can see the first symbol glow faintly again.
From deeper inside the first level, you hear yapping sounds of curiosity and interest. Down the hall where Merkas went, it is silent.
Merkas and the 2nd Floor...
After your desperate leap towards the ladder, you brace yourself to crash against it without further injury, and manage to grab ahold of a rung before landing hard on the second floor below. When you land on your feet, the stinging dart in your side reminds of you of what a close call that was. With the Dancing Lights spell still active, the soft blue light of your clone gives you only the vague impression of what chamber you have landed it, but the smells belie that some kind of oven is here. Perhaps for cooking or smelting.
In your path are some crates filled with ore and gemstones, as well as pickaxes and shovels. They don't appear to be the crates for Santekh. Just generic storage bins for the kobold miners to use.
Pulling the dart from his side, the kender sticks a finger in the holes and hisses in pain before quietly muttering to the dancing light form “Wish it flew threw me like it does you”
Taking a bit of time to check his surroundings for switches or buttons to disable the flaming trap above his head. (11 investigation).
