Scupper has stepped a few paces away and retreived a small cheap flask from one of his many pockets. He filled it from the keg and sat down on a low step sipping as the group talks. When Ika points at Scupper, he takes another swig and shakes his head to himself as he sees the plan already forming. Then Vaz speaks and puts the plan in words. Scupper takes a final swig and pockets the flask.
Always the halfling. And they say heavy is the burden what wears the crown. How little they speak of the weight on a jester's shoulders. Fine. I be the sneakiest and I be the smallest. Ye' get no argument from me there. So down the hole I go. Jest you lot remember, there is no way I go down the rigging unless that lot of Klarg's has plenty o' other tings on they mind whist I do it. Savvy lads? Because I'm not being lowered down in shark infested waters like a worm on a big hook should they all happen to be looking my way. Beyond that, they got a dog in the mix. How we gonna keep the dog from sniffin' me out? We need some'tin what smells truly awful somewhere's else to keep his attention while I'm lowered down the main mast. And while we're on it, that bloody lighted javelin should be well into Klarg or damn near his person round that time as well...so Asher can make 'im dance and die the way he does with that glaive.
Scupper paces a bit, pulls his flask and takes another swig, winces at the taste, then pours a bit out on the ground. He goes on one knee and looks it over...Based on the taste I couldn't tell you if this shite is beer, rum, or the guts of some old gobo. Based on the smell I'd say it was kerosine...Question is...does it burn?
If Scupper has any means of fire: matches or flint or something, he'll test the liquor for flammability.
And one more 'ting...a dwarf is no halfling, and a damn site bigger than I. You can get me down there and I'll make sure he's ok, but we'll not be able to pull him back up. Like I says. When I'm going down, the battle should be jest starting about the same time. The only way the dwarf and I will be gettin' out is over Klarg's dead feckin' body.
Sorry Scup, I got a little excited there. Perhaps we could convince one of our new friends to pop their head in the hole and check what they are all up to at the moment. Get a lay of the land too. Perhaps lowering you in once the melee has begun would be more of a realistic plan. says Vaz Although either way leaves us one man down who's in charge of you're rope. hmmm Varinth is lost in thought. He absentmindedly takes another quaff of the foul smelling liquid. What do you guys think?he addresses the rest of the group. Varinth looks much healthier, back straight and with a bit more colour in his ashen skin. He looks back at the little wooden cup in his hand as though he just noticed it's existence. He turns back to Scupper I'm not sure if it's flammable but I can tell you that these mischievous mites have dabbled here in fermenting meat. A little more successfully than the Barbarians in The Craggs I must say. What have they added here? he ponders to himself. He smacks his lips. Boar was the meat of choice, that is clear, but hmmm, they at least added sugar and perhaps... Trigmott? nono ah Bolar Root!Interesting choice. Would never have thought of thatHe is now talking to himself and starts his way back to the keg but then stops, gazing at the faces all around him. But perhaps we should leave this characteristic concoction for the celebrations after our victory. He stares at the keg for a moment with longing of a man seeing his love leaving on a long boat. He shakes his head and brings his attention back to the group, gently putting his cup down.
You're not wrong headed on this, Vaz. Strix has a solid thought with that hole, and da' wounded wouldn't have much trouble lowering the likes o' me...jest not into a quiet room full o' baddies waitin' for a surprise. So the more chaos the better. Put they heads on a feckin' swivel lookin' every damn way and we're likely t' have the upper hand...maybe even live to tell the tale. If Asher gets one on one with tha' Klarg, I'd say he's even odds to gut the bastard all by his lonesome, but not if he's also fending off four other gobos. So let's spin their heads, twist their tails, blind their eyes, and stomp their berries in as many ways as we can whilst I safecare our pursestrings and send some arrows in the mix while I'm at it. Fire, fury, deceit, deviousness, larsony, luck, mayhem and madness...always worked on the high seas.
Strix has a Flint and Tinder, and offers it to Scupper to try lighting the booze.
Strix starts looking at his 2 bags of caltrops and 10 pitons... Might be able to shatter this pot-metal scimitar with his hammer too - if all of those bits were wrapped around a gourd full of inflammable liquid, and they threw it into Klarg's room so that it could explode - Vaz could no doubt help there - there would be little sharp metal bits all over the place, hopefully all over the face. Klarg's face. That would be distracting, and would make a loud enough noise to signal Scupper.... Sure, might kill the Dwarf if he's too close but the goal posts have shifted now - if Ika could see he was clever and strong, who needs the Dwarf alive anyway? Some things a few gold pieces can't buy.
"Knee-one know make bomb?" he asks, gesturing at his potential shrapnel. Rooting in his bag he notices he still has 6 flower garlands. He offers them to the Goblins, gesturing to their heads and necks - "Humans battle goblins, see only goblins. make mistakes. Now no mistakes."
He tries approaching the Wolf handler, warming him with his most charming gawky, leer. "Nice doggy. Innerduce me? You die, me mind!"
So I'm a little confused by the layout for what's about to come. There's some sort of hole that only Scupper can fit through, and that hole leads to Klarg and potentially Rockseeker? Or does the hole lead somewhere else? Or is there another entryway to Klarg's lair and the hole for Scupper is like a backway that we are trying to secure Rockseeker?
Once I figure out the layout, Asher can advise on his thoughts. I just don't want to speak on something that I'm not exactly sure of.
Another thing, Asher could potentially take out Klarg one on one lol but that battle is really 50/50 so one of us is going down in the first couple turns, but if he hits and rolls high I could go down in one hit. If I had someone dealing damage, I can still take the hit(s), maybe Dario launching arrows from afar while I'm at his immediate attention?
I can't really give information on the layout out of context, I think. You have what the goblins have said, and you can ask them for more information about the location, but they're not very articulate. If you want to try to stealth up close and see what you can see, then that's an option - with risks, of course.
Ika responds Bomb? She takes a step back from the obviously dangerously insane Strix. No bomb. The goblins are not willing to take any of the (somewhat wilted) flower garlands, and their reaction suggests they don't like the smell of them. The wolf handler points to the wolf and says: Wolfie. Wolfie growls and bares his teeth at Strix.

That's what I was wanting, a layout refresher, based on what the goblins have told us, accurate or no. I just want to make sure everyone's on the same page.
As far as you know, Klarg's cave is similar to the one you are standing in, though without the split level. There's a main/front entrance, and you can also enter through the small hole from the wolf cave, though only Scupper and the goblins can fit through and there's a drop - with risk of injury - on the other side. I think that's all you would know at this point.
"I think it might be a good idea to have Scupper go down the hole, tied to a rope in case he needs to come back up, while the rest of us go through the main entrance and start a fight. We can take out Klarg and his underlings while Scupper gets Rockseeker to safety. Of course, if Rockseeker isn't there, then maybe Scupper can get a good shot in on Klarg while he isn't expecting it."
Asher, your logic is as sound as your glaive is deadly, I agree!
I didn't want to play a typical dumb fighter, so I gave him some intelligence and Charisma and instead gave him a 9 (-1) in Dexterity lol so he's not real graceful, but at least he isn't as dumb as a brick!
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Stop me in I'm wrong then, but our friendly neighbourhood warlock can communicate telepathically with anyone he can see within 30 feet (my daughter and I rolled a GOO warlock a week ago, so I'd been reading up on them) - in theory that would allow Scupper on a suitable stealth roll to go unnoticed and to report back on what he sees, provided we have a secure rope to lower him on. It needs two things, both of which I think it's ok to ask Steve directly since Incantis would likely already know the answer :
1. the wording of Awakened mind says "Communicate" - it does not specify one or two way, but generally communication requires that both parties can exchange information. In the Stevegotten Realms, is Awakened Mind a 2 way connection?
2. This is a little more precarious : The wording says you can communicate with a creature you can see within 30 feet. Now, if Scupper goes in the hole, Incantis can't see him any more, but if they're already communicating telepathically is that a problem?
If 1 = one way only, and/or if 2 is line of sight only, we could stick a mirror on a stick if anyone has one so we can set up a line of sight around a corner, or just agree a system of rope pulls to communicate : three sharp pulls for Pull me up. A single pull for lower me down / stop depending on whether you're stopped or lowering. Two pulls for Information Coming.
Information pulls :
One pull - I can't see the dwarf. two pulls - gap - two pulls, he's on the left of the room relative to the main door, two pulls - gap - 1 pull - he's on the right. Two pulls, gap, nothing , he's in the middle. That kind of thing. What else would we need to cover? A go signal?
And at any time, 3 sharp pulls means get me out of here?
"Ok, No bomb." Strix frowns. "less... we grab dwarf, run, use fire, use metal slow down chase? We see." He puts away the various bits of potential shrapnel. The flower garlands he discards and makes a concerted effort to try to memorise the faces of his new comrades. Obviously each sculpted and snaggled tooth, every furrow of Ika's brow, the graceful hooked arch of her nose are branded into his memory for all time but the rest of these hideous troglodytes could be anyone. In a fight, everything becomes blurred colours and shapes, someone's going to cleave the wrong goblin. He sighs. Maybe it will be okay if he sticks to only killing the goblins that try to kill him? Seems fair.
He clicks his tongue at Wolfie, offering the back of his hand at a safe distance to be smelled, then tries to feed him one of his "rations".
Animal Handling 20 if needed. I need that hand more though :D
Great to see some real creative thinking and planning going on! :) On the two specific questions:
1 The wording of Awakened Mind on DnDBeyond says "You can telepathically speak to any creature", so one-way only. DnDBeyond tends to be the latest version of the rules in cases where errata have been published; which version does your wording come from?
2. As soon as he could no longer see Scupper, the telepathic connection would be broken.
Mirrors are fine for extending what you can 'see' in cases like Awakened Mind. They wouldn't work for spells that send a burst of fire or cold in a straight line, for example - that would just hit and destroy the mirror.
Dario slinks off to retrieve his miss shot arrows while listening to the crew decide on a plan of action. "Maybe one of us should try to do a little bit of scouting ahead before we decide on anything."

Are the rations meat or fruit/nuts?
Wording comes google, and from my head based on the 3-book collectors set from late last year (regular covers, not the gorgeous limited ones, but we can't all be Rockefellers!) - I can have a look after work but to be honest if your wording says "speak to" that's unambiguous. Cheers.
The rations are live or dried mice, probably dried since they'd have run off or suffocated by now otherwise.
Is the booze flammable? Could the garlands burn and produce a distasteful or disorienting smell (the goblins dont like), the hole basically comes out at a dog area according to IKa and Rockseeker is held there? Is this also where Klarg is hanging out or is he not staying close to the dwarf?

If I'm interpreting this correctly, there's two different entrances to Klarg's cave? Could Scupper sneak in while the rest of the party rush in?
Incantis, half-elf warlock (great old one) 4/bard 1 ● Thorok Earthhand, hill dwarf mountain druid 6/grave cleric 2
Cragmyre Ironseed, earth genasi ancestral barbarian 3 ● Cyrus Natriallae, aquatic half-elf warlock of the deep 3
