Grom and Alten are listening in on Major Leng and Felosial‘s conversation in the next room. Though the conversation is hushed and some of it is broken they are able to make out some of what an angry female voice is saying...
....cattle herders... frightened..... monsters... night..... cattle and people both found dead.... dozens of needle-like wounds! No one has seen.... nor do they leave a discernible trail....
Followed by an older male voice...
Maybe.... goblins... trade with from... citadel.... regardless word cant... cause panic! ...don't need this... not with elections.... fix the problem... your the captain!
Suddenly the door to the next room bursts open and Felosial emerges. She is wearing a combination of leather and chainmail armor with plated metal rivets. Her cheeks are bright red as she walks by you wordlessly and exists through the front door of the house letting it slam behind her in a huff. Mayor Leng emerges a few moments later fiddling with his lengthy shirt sleeves and shaking his head. He too looks flustered, but greets you warmly, “Ah, my next appointment I presume. I am Major Leng.. I don’t believe we have met before. To what do I owe the pleasure?”
The mayor takes out a pocket square and dabs at his forehead, “Grombrindal and Alten very nice too meet you both. What brings you to my office today?” He smiles warily.
While the others go about their business finalizing the party's plans, Rees finishes her meal and tucks away any scraps of food that seem worth keeping into a small pouch at her hip.
DM Note: Is Rees trying to do this discreetly, or openly?
ooc: No shame whatsoever, just grabbing leftovers and saving them for later (I didn't throw her meal order in before because I wasn't around, but she would have made one, so even if no one else left anything she's tucking her own leftovers into her pouch)
Garon sees Rees doing this and comes over to speak with her. He is carrying a little sack.
"Umm.. excuse me miss.. but, it looks like you could use these.. please take them they are on the house."
When you open the sack you find three steak and kidney pies all wrapped up neatly in paper and ready for travel.
Rees took the package, surprised by its contents. In her experience, people didn't just give things away for free, but he didn't seem to be requesting anything in return. Smiling hesitantly, she nodded her thanks. "I appreciate it, sir. Can you tell me, is the gentleman we met with here a regular. Carlisle? I've found no one knows more about the goings on in a town than the local barkeeper."

Good afternoon Mr Mayor. My colleague and I are mounting an expedition to the Sunless Citadel. In our preparations, I was speaking with Corkie over at your Temple of Pellor. She mentioned that the town was having problems with Goblin squatting there? I thought it prudent to speak with the local government representative before we inadvertantly walked into anything you or your Constable might have step up.
The thought also occurs that perhaps my associates and I might be able to offer our services to the town, if you might find them useful, since we are going that way .

Talien's eyes start glowing red, staring directly at Chatra. He stops polishing the blade as he speaks the words in a quiet but grave tone. You doubt my skills to reclaim my dagger alone?
Chatra just responds with modesty
well I’m sure you could. But for the sake of our weapons might go unpolished and dull I would prefer you come with us. Also I’m not so sure all of us are as well trained as you and I would feel safer if you were with us.
The mayor takes out a pocket square and dabs at his forehead, “Grombrindal and Alten very nice too meet you both. What brings you to my office today?” He smiles warily.
With the pending election im sure there is something you or the towns people may need help with
Talien still staring at Chatra, his eyes fade back to blue and he says. If we leave at first light then so be it. Let the others know I will meet them here at the inn before dawn in this room.
He leaves, and heads back over to the blacksmith and asks him. Can I work for you for the rest of the day? I clean and polish weapons in my spare time, but I am sure that I can help you around here. I have made weapons before so I know how to forge quality metal, that blade you have there was my creation. In return I just ask to be allowed to use your shop to make new things when I am in town.
The mayor dabs at his forehead and chuckles uncomfortably, “So, you’ve talked to Corkie ‘eh? Well... the goblins took up residence in the Sunless Citadel ages ago. They used to harass people on the old road, but the road has fallen into disrepair and the goblins haven’t really been a problem since. In fact we trade with them once a year at the midsummer festival. They bring us an apple — with special properties — and we give them some gold. The trade has been tense, but not violent. Sometimes the goblins offer a different apple at midwinter, but this apple is corpse-white and poisonous, even to the touch..so, we certainly don’t purchase that one. No.. I don't think our real problem is with the goblins... I mean it could be Felosial seems to think so — but, she is half elven after all and hating goblins is in her blood.”
The mayor pauses and dabs his forehead and seems to get lost in thought for a second before starting again, “As your friend mentioned the elections are right around the corner at the midsummer festival. Folks aren’t likely to vote for me if they’re afraid to come out to the festival. See.. I have been trying to keep this tight to the chest, but rumors spread like wildfire here... the cattle herders don’t graze their stock too far afield these days. They’re frightened by stories of new monsters that maraud by night. From time to time, cattle and people who have gone out alone have been found dead the next day, bearing dozens of needle-like wounds. No one has seen the creatures that cause this mayhem, nor do they leave a discernible trail. I’ve tasked Felosial with rooting out whatever it is doing this, but her town guard is largely untrained and have yet to turn up anything useful. If you can figure out what’s going on and put a stop to this business I’ll gladly pay 200 gold. Of course, I’ll need proof that it has been taken care of mind you.”
At the Smithy...
Rurik curses as Talien interrupts his work once again, “Well tin man.. why don’t you just finish this sickle since I haven’t yet on account of all your interruptions. Do a good job and I’ll consider letting you use my forge when you’re in town. Forge needs more heat first.. kindly pump the billows.”

You spot an already finished sickle hanging on the back wall of the forge and study it for a moment before jumping headfirst into your task. You get an idea for how this item is made and set to work quickly preparing the forge. Rurik, untrusting of anyone except a fellow dwarf, watches you closely and mutters under his breath. However, after you being working the metal he backs off a little, crosses his arms, and observes without comment. To Rurik’s surprise you produce a well crafted sickle in just over an hour. You hand him the finished work and he turns it over inspecting it with a keen eye, “Hmmm... you surprise me tin man.. I didn’t think you would be able to produce quality like this so quickly.. It’s no masterwork mind you, but it will fetch a fair price. You are welcome to use my forge while you are here in Oakhurst as promised.”
