ENABLING CONTENT FOR YOUR CHARACTER
To use content from Obojima: Tales from the Tall Grass in the character builder, you will need to set the character preferences to include 1985 Games source category (see the .gif below).
2014 RULES
At the time of release Obojima: Tales from the Tall Grass is only supported for the 2014 version of the 5th Edition of D&D.
NEW SUBCLASSES
This book features 11 new subclasses that are compatible with the 2014 classes.
Barbarian: Path of the Belly Brewer
Bard: College of Masks
Druid: Circle of the Petal
Fighter: The Spirit-Fused
Monk: Sheep Dragon Shepherd
Paladin: Oath of the River
Ranger: Corrupted Ranger
Rogue: Waxwork Rogue
Sorcerer: Oni Bloodline
Warlock: The Lantern
Wizard: Origami Mage
These subclasses are mostly supported with the following exceptions:
College of Masks. Copycat provides the Alter Self but does not provide the 5 temporary HP or equipment changes.
Circle of the Petal. For Petal Beast Mimicry we have added the ability to add Bestial Spirit to the character sheet but we are unable to support the changes to the creature's stat block.
Corrupted Ranger. We are currently unable to scale the damage for 1st Manifestation based on the number of Curse Markers, but the provided 1d4 can be rolled as many times as needed. Additionally, at this time we are unable to support the 2nd Manifestation uses.
Waxwork Rogue. The Enchantment Detonate's action was split to represent both the fire and thunder damage.
Oni Bloodline. Oni Traits are activated in the character sheet by selecting the Arcane Prison feature in the Features & Traits section of the character sheet and selecting the appropriate features in the dropdowns. The 4th Oni Trait acquisition was moved from Level 10 to Level 6 to account for the Ogre Manipulation feature.
The Lantern. Dangerous Tool's Spiritual Weapon is actualized as an action instead of spell.
NEW FEATS
The book features 20 new feats. These feats are mostly supported with the following exceptions:
Prerequisites. Some of the new feats include prerequisites for character faction affiliations. As these prerequisites are reliant on actions taken during gameplay and not any mechanical rule, we are unable to enforce them. These feats include the text reminder for prerequisites, but characters without the prerequisites can learn the feats. These include:
Canden and Moon's Master Cut
Coven Witch
Member of AHA
Postal Knight
Tellu and Scale's Master Cut
Toraf and Bolder's Master Cut
Boomerang Expert. We are unable to make alterations to the Boomerang item with this feat.
Freediver. We are unable to modify swim speed in the way outlined by this feat.
Group Combatant. This is generally unsupported.
Light Foot. We are unable to restrict the AC bonus to not be added while wearing heavy armor.
Minor Corruption. We are unable to add a +1 bonus to AC only while the player is below half HP.
Postal Knight. We are unable to remove disadvantage while Exhausted.
Vocal Arcanist. We are unable to double the proficiency bonus for spell attacks based on the results of a Charisma (Performance) check.
Wetland Explorer. Options have been added to select creature types, but we are unable to implement the benefits for interactions only with the selected creature types.
HERO'S JOURNEY BOON SYSTEM
This book features a unique system of Boons that, at a GM's discretion, can be given to players that reflect various aspects of the player characters. These have been implemented as Optional Class Features on all 2014 Classes at level 1. Only one Hero's Journey Boon can be selected at a time, but it can be changed at any time by selecting the feature in the character sheet.
How to enable the Hero's Journey Boons in the character builder:
In the character builder, on the Home page, check "Optional Class Features" under the "Optional Features" section to enable them.
Navigate to the 1. Class page. With a 2014 Class selected, click the "Optional Feature Manager".
Check "Obojima: Hero's Journey Boon" to enable it.
When you navigate back to the main "Class Features" section of the 1. Class page, the "Hero's Journey Boon" class feature will appear in the list. From here, you can select the boon your GM has instructed you to take.
NEW SPELLS
The book features 50 new spells. These spells are mostly supported.
NEW MAGIC ITEMS
The book features 49 new magic items with over 100 variations. These magic items are mostly supported with the following exceptions:
Actions on Magic Items. Some of the new magic items grant specific actions as part of their magic. D&D Beyond doesn’t currently support the ability to attach actions directly to magic items; we have included charges and associated spells where appropriate, but in the case that an item’s functionality is otherwise text-only, we recommend creating Custom Actions on the character sheet to represent those items.
NEW MUNDANE ITEMS
The book features 29 new mundane items with 20 being new weapons. These weapons are fully supported with one exception:
Special Properties. Some of the new weapons include special properties unique to that weapon. At this time D&D Beyond cannot support these special properties within the character sheet. Each listing does include the text for special properties for ease of reference.
POTIONS
All 180 Potions from the Potion Brewing system have been implemented as Magic Items. The potion type has been added as tags, which allows them to be filtered on the Magic Items page of D&D Beyond.
POTION INGREDIENTS
All 130 Potion Ingredients from the Potion Brewing system have been implemented as Mundane Items. Rarity has been added to each item as a note, which allows them to be filtered on the Equipment page of D&D Beyond.
NEW MONSTERS
The book features 77 new monster stat blocks. These monsters are mostly supported except for this exception:
Spirit. As written the Spirits have the alignment: "Any Neutral or Good Alignment." This has remained in the compendium, but the listing has been implemented as "Any Neutral Alignment."
THE SWORD SCHOOL MASTERS
This book features NPCs that are the Masters of the Four Sword Schools throughout the island of Obojima. They are not designed to be fought against (or with) in the same way as other friends and foes, but all 8 Masters have been implemented on D&D Beyond as monsters, for ease of use in the D&D Beyond Maps VTT. The tables in the Other Locations chapter have been preserved.
NEW SKILLS
This book features two new skills: Mechanics and Salvage. D&D Beyond is currently unable to support new skills. References to each are linked to the relevant compendium section. We recommend following the instructions below to add them as custom skills.
On your character sheet, click the gear icon at the bottom of the "Skills" box.
In the side panel at the bottom, expand the "Custom Skills" section and select "+ Add Custom Skill".
In the side panel, click on the new custom skill that appears. Expand the "Edit" section. Here you can add the name of the custom skill along with its corresponding stat. This is also where you can manually adjust this skill, for example you can gain proficiency in the skill.
Note that any class feature, species trait, feat, or other game element that impacts these new skills is not done automatically and would need to be adjusted manually.
NEW CONDITION
This book features one new condition: Pacify. D&D Beyond is currently unable to support new conditions. References are linked to the relevant compendium section.
AVRAE
At the time of release this book is not supported through the discord bot, Avrae.
Notes: Clarified the limitations of Corrupted Ranger's 1st Manifestation.
Hi! I just bought this content (despite already buying the digital copy directly from 1985 Games) so that it would be integrated into the character builder for a future campaign. Unfortunately, I am only now seeing in this support thread that it can only be used with 2014 versions of the classes--after coming here to report a bug bout the backgrounds not granting the abilities and proficiencies. This is not stated anywhere in the blog post published today or on its marketplace webpage. Other third party content with player options that only supports the 2014 classes say so directly on the webpages, like this example, Book of Ebon Tides. The "2014 only" disclaimer should really be stated in more places than just the support thread for bugs.
Anyway, the backgrounds for characters still aren't working as intended regardless of selecting a 2014 or 2024 class. The Apprentice Witch, for example, shows no "Skill Proficiencies: Arcana, Survival. Tool Proficiencies: Alchemist’s supplies." All have their "feature" which is descriptive text, and some have varying degrees of their components present (such as Mechanic and its choice of three tools), but no backgrounds include their skill proficiencies.
Appreciate the team looking into these issues, as this a very fun 3rd party setting that a lot of people will enjoy!
Public Mod Note
(spamandtuna):
Backgrounds are fixed
I also would like to know if this will be updated for the 2024 rules. I HOPE that the 2024 subclasses are just a little delayed and not left out entirely as that is a rather scummy move to not say that anywhere on the store or blog post.
As well, College of Masks only provides a single mask at lvl 3 when the features description states it should be 2.
I would like to echo that I hope this book reflects 2024 D&D soon! That's more for the creator to navigate however since items like the Obojima unique weapons will need to adopt weapon mastery properties. I wish that some of this information was on the store page though!
Haven't bought the book yet (always cautious, especially with third-party stuff here), but the store page explicitly shows the "2024 and Beyond" blurb. Can you pass along that NO BOOK that has no 2024 compatibility in the builder should reflect that? It's dishonest marketing, no way around it.
Oh man I hope this gets an update for the 24 rules. The marketplace page is kinda deceptive right now if it doesn't, and I just lost money because of it.
Harpy doesn't link to the Harpy from this book, only to the 2024 MM Harpy.
Also, a whole lot of weird capitalization, bolding, and italic errors throughout the book.
Also also, PLEASE change the sales pitch so that it's abundantly clear that this is for 2014 until the legal side clears with 1985 Games(As well as other partnered content).
Furthermore, this is YET ANOTHER book that fails to implement critical character aspects(1st Manifestation from the Corruption Ranger being the chief example) that tie the whole thing together. Please pass the word to the devs & all the way up to Chris Cocks, to the best of the moderators' abilities, that Beyond, DND, investors, & Hasbro as a whole, NEEDS the fired coders back who knew how to work the site's much-official statement-maligned "spaghetti coding", &/or get said coders to train people who CAN & WILL. I am legitimately getting tired, as a money-spending customer, of "we cannot support X". It's more like "we fired the people who knew how to support X". So hire/learn from the fired coders how to work with the spaghetti coding (& compensate them thusly), or don't bother partnering with third-party content that innovates faster than upper management & investors can spare pennies for.
The skill proficiencies are fixed, but will only display those skills that exist in the system (i.e. the official skills).
The tool proficiencies are also fixed, though Apprentice Diver will not display "Tool Proficiency: Divers Armor" because this is set in the system as an armor proficiency (which will appear on the sheet accordingly).
The language from the Spirit Kin background is not yet displayed, but they're working on it.
I've noticed that the mask subclass for bard and wick subclass for rogue have a similar bug going on when it comes to the amount of choices.
The bard is meant to start with 2 masks, and gain an additional masks at certain levels. While the description on the character sheet does mention the correct number of masks, you're always 1 mask behind when it comes to the amount you can choose.
As for the rogue, you're meant to start with 3 enchantments, but you can only choose 1. You're then meant to gain 2 additional enchantments at certain levels, but you're only able to choose 1 additional enchantment each time. Once again, the text on the character sheet mentions the correct amount of available enchantments, but you're unable to select that amount.
Edit: I also just noticed that the level 17 subclass feature for the wax rogue "Spirit Flame" is added twice.
Can you guys please push forward the subclasses into 2024 like the other extended subclasses that aren’t for 2024 but are still able to be picked on a 2024 class? Definitely killed some of the hype for me seeing most of these subclasses are just worse now that they need to be played on 2014 :/
When or if they get added to the 2024 classes depends on 1985 Games. According to a user above, they’ve said they’re working on it, but haven’t provided any further info.
As a workaround in the meantime, you could potentially create a homebrew copy of your chosen subclass to see how it was set up, then replicate it onto a new one for the 2024 class.
Very deceptive that one the store page states it's for dnd 2024 in character creation but really is 2014 only. That is super deceptive and even if it's just an oversight it's out me back some cash. As nothing can be used for the current rule set being used...
It's like realising a new edition eg 6 and then release a book saying it works for edition 6 when it's built for edition 5.
Can you guys please push forward the subclasses into 2024 like the other extended subclasses that aren’t for 2024 but are still able to be picked on a 2024 class? Definitely killed some of the hype for me seeing most of these subclasses are just worse now that they need to be played on 2014 :/
As has been stated, it's on the third-party publisher to release the 2024-compatible content. This isn't the place to request that.
The fault D&D Beyond has is advertising it with the "2024 and Beyond" thing on the page, making it appear as if it's compatible.
That said, definitely able to use the solution posted by spamandtuna above. It's the same I used for Critical Role, Drakkenheim, Grim Hollow, and Humblewood already.

I have asked and they are working on an 2024 rules update. They haven't announced details just yet.
Upon trying to make a homebrew subclass using the Waxwork Rogue as a starter template, a Internal Server Error occurs every time.
Oh man I hope this gets an update for the 24 rules. The marketplace page is kinda deceptive right now if it doesn't, and I just lost money because of it.
The waxwork rogue is not set up correctly, the number of enchantments the subclass gives is wrong for the initial and all the subsequent levels.
The fact that this hasn't been fixed yet is wild. At least make the subclass usable in the homebrew creator, so I can fix it quicker than you can.
Dndbeyond, be better :)

Umbrella of Shielding has the wrong weapon type associated.
In the book, it is correctly listed as Umbrella.

In the Magic Items entry, it is incorrectly listed as a Candlemaker's Club
