Make sure your plots have urgency: it's easy for characters to retire for a free long rest when their safe house is only several blocks away, so give them a reason not to until the adventure is done. There's also a few bits of flavor that for me add to that city feel: almost every city has lots of construction, for example, pigeons everywhere, etc, but it's easy to forget those things in narration. Make a list of "city" things and work them into each place description.
Basically I'm making and am planning to DM a city running campaign and would like any tips you have if you have run a campaign like this.
