I'm taking a look at D&D Beyond and learning if I might use it as an aid to build NPC's to import into Foundry, which has a module to import chars created here. I have a modest gaming budget, and investing a modest sum for my game buddies is not out of the question.
Currently I'm experimenting in Player Tier with access to learn the basics, so I'm looking at it from that perspective. I realize I may only see PC character builder, and haven't seen anything about NPC's but that's a DM thing, possibly on a DM tier, which I haven't invested in yet.
I want to build a Piratey Giff Captain to be an ally and need more than a stat block, something I can nurture, and after realizing the Giff Race was not available, I did some research and found the Giff Monster in Mordenkaine's Tome of Foes, and can be purchased granularly, and I did so.
When I tried another PC character in the builder, even though the Giff is available in My Account. it doesn't appear in the Races listing. I thought I read somewhere that its a playable race. So idk, is it that I need to be Maximo DM tier to make it sharable or somesuch?
That leads me to ask, what about D&D Beyond? would I be allowed to create this Giff Pirate NPC; lock, stock and barrel, to be imported into Foundry VTT?
And what if I have a player that wants to roleplay a Giff? How is that accomplished?
You bought the Gith Monster, not the Race. That’s a common mistake the first time people purchase a la carte, lots of people do the same thing. You need to purchase the Gith Race from MToF. Go back to where you bought the Monster, but keep scrolling down until you can purchase the Race for $1.99 (USD).
I know that people use Beyond20 to get their stuff from here to Roll20 (another VTT), but I don’t know about Foundry. (I honestly don’t really even know about Roll20 other than it’s possible.)
You can make just about anything on DDB. If you want to use official materials you can either purchase the book in which that material is found, or you can purchase the material a la carte like you discovered. If you create a “campaign” here on DDB and invite your friends to join (by sending them the link), and if they also have accounts here on DDB, then they can officially join your campaign. If anyone in that campaign has a Master Tier subscription (costs about the same annually as an X-Box Gold membership), then that person can enable something called “content sharing,” and then everyone in the campaign can use all the books or materials purchased by anyone in that campaign. So, if you buy the Gith Race, and you or anyone else buys a Master Sub, and the subscriber enables content sharing, then all of your players in that campaign could use the Gith Race if they want.
PS- You may actually get more information asking this stuff in the “General” forum as it’s not DM specific. More folks would likely see it there and you may get more answers faster that way. I’m not really sure, but it’s a thought.
thank you for shedding light on this. Master tier is not bad, especially if I can save a lot of work;
In Hero Lab, I have built 18 key NPC's and counting for an upcoming campaign. I've gotten spoiled to that level of NPC management.
Foundry doesn't have an import for Hero Lab, yet..., and it would be hours recreating tweeking them in Foundry's character sheet, where I want to spend that time in writing the adventures
Cool. I’m unfamiliar with hero lab, so I cannot comment. And I don’t use VTTs either. But I regularly build my NPCs using the character builder and then I only convert them to monster statblocks for combat (since they are easier to use during combat) right before I need to.
Beyond20 also works directly with Foundry, maybe even better than with Roll20. Certainly possible to manage character builds in one and link across.
However, you’ll be better off asking about Beyond20 integration in the dedicated threads on this board (in the General Discussion area as I recall), or on the Foundry fora. Going direct to the plugin’s author (whose name I can’t spell correctly...) would also be sensible as a point of reference - the Beyond20 page will link you through.
