Hey all, I'm curious to know how you keep your information on your world organized! I've started using OneNote, but I wondered if there were better options out there, or other suggestions on keeping all the details of the world I'm creating in an organized fashion. Like I've seen some fillable PDFs for towns and general campaign notes, but haven't seen one that is more extensive for world building.
So, what do you do? I look forward to hearing your ideas and suggestions!
Hey,have you ever heard of world anvil?World anvil is an useful tool for keeping track of information on your worldbuilding and such.World anvil has tons of useful templates, easy sorting and support for charts, timelines, maps and more. The mapping tool allows you to link to your own world entries for easy mid game reference.World anvil also allows for creating characters or monsters for your home game and hosts an easy tool to use at the table (that being the Digital dm screen to keep your adventure details and rules referrences at hand). The Character support works for tons of systems and supports homebrew as well.Almost all of this is free costing fairly small charges for full access.I use world anvil myself for a handful of my worlds.
I use Google docs, it’s free, it lets me organise everything into folders and directories, I can access it where ever I am on laptop or mobile phone meaning that if o have a great idea I can jot it down, and I can make certain folders available to my players meaning mid game (we play remote) I can just drop the handout into the players shared folder.
I also keep my DM journal up to date and the sanitize it and post a player friendly (no secrets) version for the players.
Realm Works from LWD is an excellent tool for world building.
It provides lots of interlinking between different topics. It auto-links based on topic names. It allows manual relationship links between any two things - so parent/child; master/minion; etc.
It isn't undergoing active development at the moment.
It is a stand-alone application for Windows, but does provide syncing to a cloud server; and players can sync their "player version" so that they have all the information about your world which you've marked as revealed. You can reveal individual snippets of information within a page too; so you can gradually reveal more information about the same topic as they discover more about it.
There is a player view which you can use during a game session if you want to show your players something; e.g. partially revealed maps, portraits of NPCs they're meeting; information about the region they're in.
Yes, you do have to pay. I pay something like $40 for 1 year. That's just over $3/month. I find it more than reasonable considering other charges for other services like it.
I find it easy to use, fully featured, and super helpful to organize things. I'll be honest, I don't know how much my *players* use it, but *I* use it all the time and it helps me organize my world.

Good stuff! Follow up: do you think it matters whether you are playing in-person or virtually?
Not really. I use World Anvil because I need the organizational features, which would be true whether I was playing in person or at the table.

Yes google docs. That's how I do it. I embrace the chad google docs over all else.
I must be very old school- for most of my DMing I use a notebook and graph paper!
Only spilt the party if you see something shiny.
