Hi I recently posted here as a upcoming first time DM coming up with a treasure hunt theme. I plan on sending on my players on a scavenger hunt to piece together a key to get into the lost city or items that would please the guardian of the lost city/island? I’m sort of drawing a blank there
What if the entrance to the lost city/island is a portal that requires certain items to activate it? As for the items, they should be pretty widespread. Perhaps some fur/teeth from dangerous monsters, a statuette/painting/jewelry item guarded by some other monsters/humans, a certain amount of money, a magic item, and more. Figure out what is guarding the objects before you figure out what they are- pick monsters appropriate to character level and think about what kind of items they would be likely to have. You can use the Encounter Builder to scale encounters.
What are you planning to have in the lost city/island? Maybe the items can follow a theme based on the goal.
I was thinking that when they get near the island, there are sirens trying to deter people from coming, and while there is gold I was thinking that some of it is a trap, and I was planning on having a legendary sword (the characters were hired by a noble to retrieve it so he can restore his family honor) and I was planning on having some gold that is real and some special magic items specifically for each of the characters once they protect the city from a pirate king that’s trying to find the “treasure” first
One clue I was thinking of is that all of the players enter a cavern and then the cavern starts filling with water and they have to open a locked box to retrieve an item (maybe a necklace or a ring)
