have to agree, the DM makes or breaks whether the DM character can work.
I've done it twice, both for short windows, and both because of players deciding to save someone along the way. One was used also to show a barbarian some tactics that they might be able to mimic (new player) without telling them how to play, before said DMPC parted with the group as a full time adventurer and because a support cast at the hideout. The other was a mutually beneficial party up during a jailbreak scene where they were there use the group to get out of dodge and once they saw the opportunity to escape they left the group high and dry, so it gave the group a bit of a "be careful who you choose to party with without doing an ounce of investigation" lesson without directly hurting their chances of escaping all that much.
I do kinda dislike the notion of a DM playing a character full time within the confines of the group, but just as there are moments where it is a detriment to have the DMPC involved there are also moments where it shines.
Dmpc gets a bad rep purely because of dms wanting to be the main protagonist. If you dont have that problem. It works fine.
As for people making a difference between npc and pcs... They are all characters. Its all role plays. You dont call han solo an npc. Second role perhaps but definitely not an npc. That bartender might as well defend the city as a 5th level fighter. He probably has a story too. Dms are used to portray numerous characters. 1 more shouldnt be a problem.
Now i get people not wanting to have conversations with themselves. But thats unavoidable in many cases even if you dont have a character in the group. But i do get why some preffer not to.

Do you mean that the DM is actually playing a character while DMing? It's been a long time, but I think I remember something like this. I think it was only because no one else wa DMing and they wanted to progress their character.
I see nothing wrong with it on the surface, since it could make it easier for the players to navigate the adventure, instead of spending 30 minutes asking every NPC in town questions to get to the main plot.
But then their could be the chance the DM ensure his character survives no matter what. Believe it or not DMs do suffer from biases like anyone else.
