just after a few suggestions as having writers block currently (prob the heat)
in our current campaign we have a werewolf hating paladin who has acquired a shiny sword. He’s slowly learning this is a sentient sword and as he proves himself worth to it he will gain some minor abilities.
the inhabitant of the sword he will eventually fine was a mage that lead an army of Wolf and werewolf creatures in his life. So just looking for a few minor abilities it could grant that would lead clues to this while they find clues as to what this guy did as part of the plot line.
charm/talk to animals seems first steps. Maybe some moonlight styled spells.
Later on, it could grant a sort of boodlust ability, allowing the user to take another attack as a bonus action. Other ideas could be heightened perception checks based on sound and smell, like advantage or a +1 bonus.
Another trait could simply be that the sword, the longer it’s used, very slowly starts changing the physical body of the user, giving them some fur, or sharper nails/teeth, yellower eyes etc
The ability to cast dream or mislead but you appear as a wolf and can't speak in the illusion/dream
The effects of sanctuary that applies to wolves and werewolves
The ability to cast phantasmal killer appearing as a wolf. Only the victim sees it but the player looking at their injuries afterward can determine it was an animal attack.
Being able to temporarily gain pack tactics from the wolf
Being able to regenerate a certain amount of hit points per day like the loup garou
A lunar smite that forces shape changers to revert like moonbeam or does extra damage to them
The rampage ability from gnoll which is just a bonus action attack when you reduce a monster to 0
There's probably more you could do based on how the lord of werewolves works. For example I have a shadow sorcerer werewolf boss so I could add shadow sorcerer abilities like darkness or shadow step.
For a very subtle hint, you can start by always telling that player specifically what in the room is silver, every time.
"The room was once an elegant hallway, covered in dust and decay. There is a large hole in the wall, with some dark stains which could be blood. The stairs are broken, and something seems to have been dragged through the dust up them. >PC with moon sword<, you notice a pair of silver candlestick holders on the sideboard."
And just keep that up - always that one character noticing what in the room is silver, nobody else. The silverware is not important to anything, except that this one character notices it, every time.
Morning,
just after a few suggestions as having writers block currently (prob the heat)

I've got a few ideas:

Some solid ideas there. Thanks much.

Curses would work too. Have the player get hit by a moonbeam and have the sword lose its powers temporarily.
