Sometimes you just don't want to prep. Sometimes you get a last minute call to run a session. Maybe it's your first time DMing and you don't know where to start.
Whatever the reason, prep may seem like a mountain to climb. Well allow me to help you! I remember when I was first trying to figure everything out and I stumbled across A Wild Sheep Chase. It's a fantastic one shot that you can get for free over on the DMsguild. The only issue at times can be how do I convert this pdf into an actual session?
Some DMs have a gift, they can read it once and go from there, some are masters at improv, storytelling, and off the cuff humor. Well I unfortunately don't fit that boat and I'm sure many others out there are just like me. I need a ton of notes; because once I've got things organized, then I feel comfortable taking things in new directions.
I like my games to be filled with ambiance, music, handouts, printed or drawn maps, etc. I want all my encounters neatly organized too. Well thanks to my obsession, I can make your lives a whole lot easier! I wanted to give back to the community that is filled to the brim with knowledge and helped me be a better DM. This may be the first, but hopefully wont be the last of my notes. Onboarding new DMs should be easy and I hope with this I can help grease the wheels!
Without further ado:
Google Docs Notes for A Wild Sheep Chase: DM Notes
I haven't read the actual adventure yet, so I can't comment on that aspect, but I can tell that you've put a lot of effort into making it easy to access and run. I feel I could almost certainly just read it in the time people take to get their stuff out and set up and run it well. Thanks for putting the effort into doing this for the community.
If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.
I've been through the adventure as a player and I liked it. The Bedragon and the fact that a Wizard literally turned into a Gibbering Mouther was cool, and the latter fight actually felt relatively suspenseful even though it's a CR 2 monster just because we were all low health and it had a lot of hit points.

BoringBard's long and tedious posts somehow manage to enrapture audiences. How? Because he used Charm Person, the #1 bard spell!
He/him pronouns. Call me Bard. PROUD NERD!

That's awesome! I always run this one for new players and it goes great every time, I've never had any balance issues either so it's good to know others don't too!
Hi! This looks incredible, thank you for putting in so much effort! Bit of a newbie but what average party levels would you go for for scaling? I’ll have 4 players at my table so was thinking level 4? :)
Thank you, this one's for level 5 players! If they were level 4 it might be a bit to challenging! Hope you have an Amazing session, let me know how it goes!!!
This is wonderfully helpful, thank you! This really reminds me of my own prep I usually do. Even your color key is close to what I do for myself. This is going to save me so much time. Just wanting to run a quick game with a few friends later this week.
Running this over the weekend as a Mother's Day present for a friend. First of all, thank you. I grabbed everything off your Patreon and am amazed at how well you translated this into something so easily managed for a DM that is less on the creative side himself. Of course, my party of three is made up of a Cleric, Rogue, and Ranger - none of which has proficiency in or more than a +1 bonus to Arcana. So, I'm fully expecting the sad ending, and going to be utterly shocked if they somehow succeed!
It was fantastic! Everyone had a blast. The mother actually was playing as an Owl rogue which made for some incredibly surprising twists to battles at Noke's tower. She kept sneaking behind people in the air and then was able to directly damage Noke when he was riding his bed dragon. I had to improvise a bit because she was about to sneak attack him to death before I could get him to transform. LOL Really impressed, seriously, and I can't wait to run something you put together again.
Hi, thanks for posting this. It's great. I've been looking for little side quests for my campaign. As I'm running Storm Kings thunder and I want some fun side quests for my players to do when in the sandbox chapters of the book.
I really appreciate that! The Wild Sheep Chase is one of my favorite One-Shots, Winghorn Press always knocks it out of the park! I've actually prepped over 5 dozen other sessions even better than this one, just check my signature!
Wow, thank you so much for your work! We are at a vacation house right now and spontaneously decided to play a one-shot this weekend, so your notes will be immensely helpful! <3
You're welcome! Hope you and your players have an Amazing Time! Let us know how it goes too, I always love hearing the stories!!!
They totally did! :)
Three players: an Orc Barbarian (Path of the Totem Warrior) with a dip in Fighter, a Woodelf Rogue (Arcane Trickster) and a Forest Gnome Sorcereress (Draconic Bloodline), all level 5. Of course they derailed the sh*t out of the module, but it was a blast nonetheless. xD
They fought Guz but did not kill him in the end - instead our Barbarian Orc managed to "talk from a sister to a brother" and convince him to leave the wizard's tower and join the army.
They really didn't like the aloof and slightly arrogant Shinebright and were quite conflicted whether they should really help him or if the situation didn't actually serve him right. Since only the rogue could speak with him due to the spell scroll (the Sorcerer refused to READ a spell as such a thing was totally beneath her), the translation might have been slightly biased.
Their opinion of Shinebright didn't improve after they talked to Noke and sorta sided with him... especially after he was sad that Guz had left, which obviously meant there was some kind of love story between those two?!?! (lol)
While talking with Noke, the Rogue managed to use her invisible mage hand and steal the wand from him, and from here everything went into chaos as Noke AND the sheep Shinebright tried to snatch the wand inbetween fighting, the Sorcerer set half the house on fire and Noke was never able to leave the scene as he was completey surrounded. It was so much fun though. :D
The group managed to defeat all enemies (the apes weren't able to flee either due to the fire) but only rendered them unconscious and tied them up. They then discussed options with Shinebright who insisted to use the wand and risk dying, and the Rogue actually managed to beat the high DC and transform him back. Shinebright planned to immediately start repairing the wand, even though it might take him months or even years. The players asked the bear and apes if they wanted to stay and be freed eventually, or live as animals in the forest - they all decided to leave but check in occasionally with Shinebright, hoping he might succeed eventually and turn them back.
Shinebright offered Noke to put this all behind them and stay at the tower, but basically hinted at only allowing his apprentice some spellcasting tasks in the future, still not acknowledging Noke's high level of magic. Noke declined and decided to catch up with Guz and talk about their possible future together...
I love it! This is why D&D is so Amazing; it might be the same adventure, but it plays out differently for each group! I'm so glad you all had such a great time! Here's to many more Amazing Adventures!!!

A map of Shinebrights tower. I use this as a reference when drawing out the map for my players
I hope this help! If you have any advice how I can improve this further please let me know either here or leave a comment on the google doc itself!

It is a great adventure. I'd especially like to call out the bear who is in the outhouse when the PCs arrive.
