I’ll be running a session in a couple of weeks for a level 4 party. I want the party to be looking for a rare artifact which is based in glade. The ‘Gaurdian’ of the item will be a shambling mound. I really want some extremely low level plant monsters to slow them down. When they get closer to the ‘artefact, I want to plant world to try and slow them down by vine and difficult terrain.
Any suggestions? I have seen a vine blight which looks ok but anything else would be greatly appreciated.
This is indeed a great fit for Blights. They are low level, fun in swarms, and there are variants that are higher CR monsters. If you described them more like minor Shambling Mounds they could be a foreshadow of the climatic battle.
tl;dr: I think your instinct is on point. There are several blights (just search).
Also don’t be afraid to re-skin. Use some goblins and have them look like plants or however you want. Instead of a short sword, they poke you with a branch, etc. Just make a cosmetic change to any challenge appropriate monster.
As a bonus, it can stop more experienced players from meta-gaming, because they don’t know what they’re actually facing.

Thank you so much. I will definitely run with this either way. I like to foreshadowing aspect you mentioned. Once again - thanks 😊

Great idea. Thank you. This could really work too. 👍

Not certain if this is what you're looking for, but in my blog I wrote out different ways to use each of the blights (while sticking to RAW rules, more or less.) If it seems interesting to you, check out the article by following the link below. (The link is to twig blights. The other two are separate articles right before and right after. You can follow the arrows at the bottom of the page if you want to see them.)

Also, suggestions for which monsters might be found together (for people tired of dungeons full of one humanoid race, and perhaps a few beasts and undead.)

You can also use the Assassin Vine, decreasing the amount of poison damage from 6d6 to 3d6.
