So my players are entering an area called the Mist of the Unremembered. I was hoping if anyone would have any cool idea of what I could hide in there waiting for them. What kind of big creature could be lurking, or sunken treasure to distract them from their goal of discovering this new continent. Any and all ideas are welcome!

Well, obviously, forgotten things. I suggest classic monsters that never got converted into the current edition, such as the thought eater (which, as a bonus... also steals memories).
Undead sailors who in life were deliberately wrecked by local townsfolk because they were carrying a disease, and they have returned on the anniversary of their deaths to expose the truth and claim revenge.
... Wait, I think that's been done.
But seriously, maybe the mists could be Ravenloft mists that send them to... it sounds like you're discussing an ocean voyage, so let's say the Sea of Sorrows, where they could have an encounter with the Relentless.
If you want something original, the mists could be kicked up by air or water elementals or both.
Maybe they find an island village full of disconcertingly friendly people, most of whom anxiously insist nothing is wrong as more of them disappear night after night. And let's say they're under the thumb of a vampire, who sends vampiric mists to feed on them under the cover of the fog.
I originally read this as “interesting things to put inside a frog,” which would have made for a fascinating thread. Shame.
Anyways, here’s some ideas:
An amnesiac ogre who’s built a small hut. Greets visitors warmly and offers them a hot meal, but goes berserk and attacks everyone it sees if removed from the fog
A Kuo Toa civilization which worships the discarded figurehead of an abandoned ship
The party gets stuck in quicksand, and as they struggle to break free a shambling mound shows up and tries to eat them
A water elemental composed of poisonous water; infects the characters with a swamp-related disease on hit
A ghost town haunted by wraiths. During the day, it appears to be a normal town filled with perfectly sane people; during the night the town is overrun by wraiths and all the people die, then are resurrected the next day (with their memories wiped) to repeat the cycle
A nice old lady named Bertha who lives in a shack by herself making potions. Everyone thinks she’s a witch, but she’s really just a devoted herbalist. She gives the party benign potions if they clear her name
A kobold riding a giant frog; asks for directions and tips the party 5gp if they help out
An insane hunter who continually shoots poisoned-tipped arrows at the party as they travel, mistaking them for a moose the hunter has been chasing for the past seventeen years. Shouts “die, antlered fiend!” right before shooting, which makes the arrows pretty easy to avoid.
A ferryman offers to help the party across a lake. The ferryman is actually a kraken cultist and is trying to bring the party to the kraken’s lair so it can eat them
An undead knight that challenges the strongest-looking party member to a joust
A nice old lady named Bertha who’s actually a green hag. Everyone thinks she’s a witch, because she is one. Sometimes you should judge a book by its cover
If you're open to home-brewing a couple of stat blocks, two foggy encounters my players have dealt with, are a group of floating, phantasmal stingray-like creatures, and an enormous mimic disguised as a small shack. Maybe these will help inspire you.
For the stingrays, I used a Specter stat block with modifications, and just had them traveling through the fog like a school of fish, ignoring anything that didn't move quickly, make loud noises, or cast a spell. But if they become aware of something (or someone) in the vicinity, they'll swarm it and try to feed on it.
The mimic was encountered the remains of an abandoned village, looking like the last thing still intact. There were a few clues that something was wrong - it wasn't showing significant damage or wear, it wasn't positioned logically among the remains of the other buildings, etc. But it had what looked like a lit lantern hanging over the door (like an anglerfish lure), so how could they not investigate?
First option is the search light type fog monster. Have an Astral dreadnought swallow an entire ship whole in front of them for the drama! Make its anti magic cone act like a search light through the fog. Alternatively if that's too powerful and you really want the players to beat it in a fight then use the purple worm. If you prefer smaller then use a beholder type as a search light. Describe it like a floating eye with a beam of light ( the anti magic cone). I personally like the gauth with it's paralyzing stare or Eyestalk of Gzemnid. Maybe both the dread naught and the creepy floating eyes.
Another option are your slender man types like the nightwalker and whistler. Tall people walking through the fog that on close inspection are just wrong. Sorrow sworn can also do this role.

I like the thought of the people there getting aid from an air AND a water elemental

I like the spectral sting-ray, gives them a chance to get through without issue, but also can turn into a combat if they don't do well. Do you have a link to that homebrew or is it unmade currently?

Do you know what edition this comes from?
3e, most recently, but thought eaters date back to 1e. Shame they never made it to the current edition — there’s an appalling lack of platypus-themed monsters in 5e.

The 3e image really doesn't get the vibe; the 1e version is just such a 'wtf' monster (all three editions are at the above link).

i made a monster just like this. its called the forgotten king, its an archfey, and it rules over things that were not converted to 5e. it can summon past monsters, enforce rules from past editions(some of wich were really cool) and even remove rules from the current game(maybe dont do this one)

Medium humanoid (human), lawful neutral

Prometheus doesn't get his liver eaten every day for you to ignore the allure of arson.
