Hey guys! So I am running the starter set for 5e the mines of phandelver and needless to say I am off book and I love it! We have been off the specifics but going to the locations and using the objectives roughly as fodder to enjoy something truly different and we love it so my advice is NOT how to get back on book, more so it is ideas on how to spring board from here once we complete wave echo cave.
Here are the detailed. in short we have a board that is evil (no one know) and all he wants to do is gain power. In order to do so, he befriended glass staff, befriended the goblins, stormed cragmaw castle and gave it to his goblin friends -with a Forged deed no less - and legitimately has all monsters knocked out after battles, revives then and tries to hire them or kill them. I love it! But then we got to Agatha - the all knowing banshee where even in the book it says you can ask her ANY question and she will be willing to answer it. His question? What can I do to get you to marry me. Seriously.
So! I gave him some tasks, obviously dangerous and evil in nature and he is down for it! See below, as it is not super important. Thing is, in short she will be able to make a ring of wish and then wish to be able to ohase between banshee and elf at will, and then will marry him. I then hope to end the campaign with him leaving and becoming a big baddie later on in a custom campaign, but I dont know where to go with him per say - once he is no longer a PC, should I make him climb a ladder and become a mortal king? Or should I have him turn into a litch with the help of his banshee queen? Should this bard be betrayed and just make agitha the evil baddie for the future? Any ideas would be great :)
For funzies here is his task. I know you can't really make magic items in 5e but whatever, it's their vows and ingredients that make the wish (or at least this wish) possible I guess lol
She will marry you and stand by your side forever if you can grant her her wish. In order to do so you will need to forge her and you wedding bands with the following qualities.
Gold harvested by your own hand,
A raw diamond blessed by a holy priestess for love and fortune in life and death, then cut for the center Stone and the remainings cuttings to be ground to dust and smelted into the rings.
Smelted with bone dust from the undead that still walk the land,
Banded by a dragons heartstring slain by your hand,
Forged by a dwarf over the lost anvil in the magical wave echo cave,
Bathed in the blood of a friend slain by your hand believing you were friends up until death,
blessed by Agatha through the exchange of vows.
After doing this, she said she and he will be tied together for this life and the next, with her being able to walk this mortal plane in her former glory and beauty.
You’ve got some really interesting possibilities there! Is the player down for being retired and then his former character turned into a villain? Cause that could be amazing later. From what you’ve said, it seems like you will come up with an entertaining ending either way. Keep us posted, I’d really like to know how this will turn out.
Definitely haha thats why I was thinking of making him the villian i just didnt know what road to take. any other ideas on ways it could go or opinions?
I love creative and flexible players like this. They make everything so much more interesting. A question I have, though: I love the idea of him retiring as an adventurer, and starting on the path to become a big bad. The question though is: will you allow him to play that boss? Or will you control it as the DM? There are pros and cons to either avenue, but it is a question worth turning over.
You have a good point. The player is a very capable DM himself so I'd be up for either - heck it may even be that I'd get to the point of the final story arc 10 levels from now and have him switch to the DM for the last bit if he wants so he could plan his character. I'm open for either, the question is just what to do between level 5 and 15 when they are able to take on a super banshee or even lich kind of guy
