I'm running a ToA campaign which the PCs chose Eku to be their guide. My problem is, I really think Eku as a couatl is really overpowered! So I feel that when the PCs have her, there is no real sense of threat in the jungle, Eku's got their back. I wanna get rid of Eku, but I don't know a legit way to do it. We are deep in the jungle and are about to reach Orolunga to see Saja N'Baza.
I tried making Eku wanna stay in Mbala to give the villager remains a proper burial in hopes that the players leave Eku there, but the players dont wanna leave her and helped instead. I'm planning to have Saja N'Baza invite Eku to become an apprentice or something like that so Eku will have to stay in Orolunga, but I dont know whether that will work or not.
Any idea on how to get rid of Eku legitimately would be appreciated.
The easiest would be to just kill Eku off if you've already revealed to the PCs that Eku both A. is a Couatl and B. that she's willing to help the PCs when they're in danger.
If you haven't done either of those things yet, then treat her as a guide - but not a combat asset. Have her run away from danger and hide or something similar, and don't have her reveal her true nature unless things seemingly become very, very dire.
Nothing about Eku's description says that she's a security blanket, nor does it say that she'll intervene. Or even enter dungeons. Even though the standard couatl stats are fairly beefy, how do you even know she's a standard couatl? It sounds like you've been using her in a more active manner, in which case, that's harder to pull back from. Then again, when one gets into middle age, sometimes, the ol' muscles don't heal back like they used to when one was young. Maybe she's actually aging, no longer used to the rigours of combat, and needs the help of adventurers to do actual grunt work, while she donates the proceeds to helpful charitable causes.
