I'm green as green can be to D&D and DM'ing. My party, which consist of new players using the pregen character sheets (Wizard, Rogue and Folk Fighter), just finished the Cragmaw HIdeout. I've been scouring the web for ways to transition the 2 campaigns. I do play on moving Greenest from HOTDQ to take place in Triboar, looking to incorporate the NPCs from LMOP into HOTDQ. Here is how I was going to hopefully hook the two together:
* PCs return to Phandalin with SIldar and I would have Carp chase a ball that rolled toward the PCs and get excited knowing they are adventurers. Carp would try to convince the PCs to come to his house for dinner, which would hopefully get them to take the Reidoth Quest in Thundertree.
* At Thundertree when they encounter Venomfang, Leosin would come to assist them, since there is only 3 PCs. Hopefully Venomfang wont kill everyone and fly off. Then Leosin would let the PCs know how he has been tracking cultist through this area and may request for their help down the road if needed, returning a favor for him helping them out.
* At the Rebrand Hideout, I would have the Nothic get inside the Folk Fighter's head and how she misses her childhood home inTriboar where here parents reside. Hopefully that will help transition to Greenest scene taking place in Triboar.
* Basically I would let the PCs figure the rest of LMOP out and at the end have Sildar hire the PCs to transfer Iarno back to Neverwinter, where they receive word from Leosin about troubles in Triboar.
SO, does these seem possible to pull off? I've been tripping over this for the past week as our 2nd session takes place next weekend.
Also, I don't have The Rise of Tiamat book yet, will moving HOTDQ north effect the 2nd half of the storyline?
Much thanks and hopefully the 2nd session will go smoother with more role playing...
Chapters 1, 2, and 3 of HotDQ could be moved north to another location fairly easily, but Chapter 4 is essentially a caravan from Elturel to Baldur's Gate to Waterdeep over 40-50 in-game days. your trek would be considerably shorter in that chapter due to the much closer distance to Waterdeep, but honestly I don't think you would have much issue otherwise. Later Chapters in HotDQ wouldn't be affected so long as you still wound up in Waterdeep by the end of Chapter 4. I don't think that there would be any impact on Rise of Tiamat past that.
I am almost in the excact same boat as you, and i've been using this forum alot to get some nice feedback on how to pull this one off!! It is a fantastic idea to use Phandalin as the setting for the start of HoTDQ, since the players is invested in the town!! Do you have the HoTDQ book? :-) I'm trying to get them more invested by having the PC's making friends of the people in the city! Daran Edermath knows alot about Netheril and is becoming a good friend of my MC Warlock. Sildar is a Heroic fighter, and is already on very good terms with the Folk Hero Fighter. Toblen Stonehill and Quelline likes the Dwarf Cleric alot.. They have also been given permission to rebuild The Sleeping Giant after kicking the RedBrands out, and use it as their own bussiness!
If you want them to go to Thundertree there is Also Mirna in the Redbrand Dungeon to consider * She points them to thundertree to retrieve a necklace worht 200GP... I REALLY wanted my PCs to go to Thundertree, so i had the necklace replaced by a minor magic item, which made them instantly want to go there!! Nice idea about Leosin, didnt think of it that way! I am up with the Venomfang Encounter next.. and i think my PC's will get the cultists up to the Dragon, and if they RPG accordingly i will have Venomfang use his Breath on the Cultists... With the breath weapon away (for about 5-6 rounds) they will get a much easier start!! IF anyone dies permanently, i will have Reidoth appear and ressurect the fallen player..
Nice to hear someone else doing the same thing and learn from their ideas.
But i have worked the transition around to be quite nice i think! The only issue is that they will be around level 5 where HotDQ is 1-8.. But that can be scaled :-)
1) After black spider they will be sent to Neverwinter on personal quest stuff 2) They Return to Phandalin which is basically Chapter 1 of HotDQ (revised with LMoP NPCs and locations and stuff) 3) They will find the camp, if they take a long rest after chapter 1 then it will be abandoned , and the prisoners will be in the cavern 4) The trip will be from Neverwinter to Waterdeep which is roughly 500 miles, and 40 days of travelling time.. And that is where i am right now in my planning :P
I hope it helps a bit, i would love to hear more about your sessions, and how you plan on transitioning the two adventures :-)
It's super easy to scale the encounters to challenge the players. My PCs were 3-4 when we hit the opener of HotDQ after playing through LMoP. If you have Volo's it has kobold variants that are higher CRs which I used to create sort of troop units of kobolds. And instead of guard drakes I used ambush drakes and then any cult member whos rank started Dragon I just used the next up in the ranks as the CRs go up by two between each of the lower ranks of the cult.
