So im making a homebrewd campaign, and im stumped when it comes to an item that the party could give to a god level creature in return for a key. The creature i made is a mix between father time and the grim reaper. he is able to travel to different dimensions and through time. the party needs this key for a device to be able to travel to different realms and this creature is the holder of the key. I would like to give them the option of giving this creature a gift instead of the party fighting him and having a full party wipe. The creature doesn't really need material items, also any material item he is able of obtaining anyway so there not worth anything to him. so any ideas?
perhaps this omnipotent deity lacks emotion, and asks for "experiences". The PC's must each tell the story of something with significant personal emotion. Don't roll for it. Simply goad the players into revealing personal truths about their characters. Perhaps the deity can suggest something based on his knowledge of time? aka use your DM knowledge of the characters.
Adding on to the last post. If the god doesn't need material objects but values an experience he might ask the characters to give him a cherished memory. This could be through a memory sucking crystal or something. That would put more weight on gaining the key since they had to lose something irreplaceable to get it.
I really love Dantrig's idea. Adding the weight of losing a motivating memory from their past is pretty cool. Like their main goal might be to kill the man who killed their spouse, they give up the memory of that man. The monster doesn't REQUIRE emotion, but it becomes like a drug. Something recreational that gives him a slight high.
On Aaron's idea, it might be cool to make it like Death on Supernatural. Death is a gaunt but shill old guy who is just looking for perfect pickle chips. Maybe it could be something simple like that.
I mean, possibly the God is tired and wants a break, telling the PC's to perform his duty for some time or the such.
Or maybe the God is so tired he wants to die, finding a ring of mortality which turns the thing into a mortal which can be killed could be an adventure in itself.
All powerful guy knows their full backstory... Ask for a deed that will be easy to agree to, but hard to do... Seek to redress a mistake they made and ask for forgiveness. Seek to face that they would rather forget. Deal with a mess they made, etc. Fights are easy, make them role play and give of themselves...

I was going to suggest a day off as well. Have the PCs run a reaping mission. Make it like the show Dead Like Me where they have to hand out some missions to low level reapers throughout the world and maybe help out on one of the missions that's been given to a lazy reaper.
There are a lot of great ideas above, really creative stuff there! Perhaps a token from someone on another plane? Something either stolen from them and taken to another plane or a token of someone they fell in love with but couldn't be with?

Home-cooked food? Basically anything sentimental in nature.

I love AaronOfBarbaria's idea. This god-like being demanding a cookoff. :D
I love lighthearted humor like that in my games.

This is the best answer.
I once shoved 9 different tree seeds down the final boss's throat, magically grew them and killed him.
