Hey there! Im DMing for a few guys who have never played DnD before and they are very excited about the character creation element! I gave them the players guide but told them if they wanted to pick a race that wasn't as basic they could go ahead as long as they ran it by me first!
One player has asked me if there is any way he can be a mushroom person. Is there any kind of anthropomorphic mushroom race? Homebrewed Races are valid too. I know he will want something more on the cute side, He loves that cottage-core stuff and he'll probably spend the whole game trying to date his boyfriend's character
yeah, um, that is a unique request and I'll admit my first thought was Toad from Mario Brothers games. I'm not aware of any race cannon race but I found homebrew here that MAY be what you are looking for. https://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Myconid_(5e_Race). Just be careful with homebrews that it does not break your game for the sake of pleasing a player fungi desires.
I found this from doing a google of "5e mushroom race" So maybe there are other options than the one I posted.
Myconid Adult, Soverign, and Sprout are actually in the Monster Manual.
It would need some adjustment to be made into a playable race, but you can use the Custom Lineages option in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything to create a custom race, or;
You can give it Darkvision 120ft, Sunlight Sensitivity (Drow), Mind Link (Kalashtar), and Poison Spray as a racial cantrip, along with a variable +2/+1 to whatever stats you feel are appropriate. Then at 3rd and 5th level they could get the following 1/long rest abilities: Fog Cloud [2nd level] (Reflavored as Cloud of Spores), and Ray of Sickness.
Not entirely certain how that balances, but should be good enough to be playable. Maybe add in Proficiency with Nature checks.

Yeah, the link I included above seems to be the common homebrew Myconid race that is floating around the web but I like some of the suggestions you made.
Yeah, the link I included above seems to be the common homebrew Myconid race that is floating around the web but I like some of the suggestions you made.
I'm pretty antagonistic to any homebrew content that isn't connected to something semi-official, so I didn't even bother clicking on the link originally.
Looking at it more closely, my suspicions were confirmed. By keeping the Pacifying Spores, Rapport Spores, and Animating Spores abilities, it is way over powered. Group telepathy, 1 minute Stun, and a free familiar is just too potent. The Sun Sickness drawback is also too extreme.
High Risk/High Reward PC creations are bad for balance and playability because they'll push a party in over their head, and then suddenly drop dead, leaving everyone else to pick up the pieces. This is especially important when considering new players.
If they would be interested in being a Spore's Druid, they could be a collection of spores that took the form of another race and gained their racial traits. That is assuming they would want to play that class, but it seems like a way to be a mushroom person while also being able to be whatever other "race" they wanted
I echo the sentiment to use an existing race and just reskin/reflavor it as a Myconid. Not only will that save you all homebrew time, but it should help with any worries about something being over or under powered!
Human is a great race to use for reflavoring, as there's nothing specific that would be hard to reflavor, and the bonus feat helps with making them unique! I'd also suggest Grung, as you can tie the poisonous aspects into it being a poisonous mushroom, and the Water Dependency is the need to be watered as a plant!
Using the monster directly has the problem that it doesn't have sun blindness, it dies in sunlight. Also, they aren't really all that cute. For a Mario Brothers mushroom person, I suggest a reflavored forest gnome (and I'd be totally willing to replace 'speak with small beasts' with 'speak with fungi').
I would reskin a Ghostwise Halfling and say their telepath is from spores.

I'd say something from Kobold's Press usually has more integrity to game balance than the more game breaking home brew floating around that just gives a Myconid player race ALL THE POWERS in the Monster Manual, if you wanted to purchase a whole book for one race.
What I would do if you have Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, is custom lineage it the character, probably privileging wisdom, give dark vision instead of a proficiency, and choose from durable, poisoner, skulker or maybe shadow touched for a feat. Then go Druid, and clearly circle of spores and your player should be happy with the flavoring and within the power parameter of other PCs.

Jander Sunstar is the thinking person's Drizzt, fight me.
here's some lore if you're curious...The book, Exile, has two separate passages on them, here's the first passage....not posting the second as it'd be a big spoiler. they're very slow and can't talk (just telepathy)...i'd say go for some kind of halfmyconid
... He knew that the myconids, the fungus-men, a weird cross between humanoid and toadstool, were watching him anxiously. The basilisk had come in here in its first travels to the region, and the myconids had suffered a great loss. Now they were no doubt scared and dangerous, but Drizzt suspected that they knew, as well, that it was he who had slain the monster. Myconids were not stupid beings; if Drizzt kept his weapons sheathed and made no unexpected moves, the fungus-men probably would accept his passage through their tended grove.
The wall to the upper tier was more than ten feet high and nearly sheer, but Drizzt scaled it as easily and as quickly as if it had sported a wide and flat staircase. A group of myconids fanned around him as he reached the top, some only half Drizzt's height, but most twice as tall as the drow. Drizzt crossed his arms over his chest, a commonly accepted Underdark signal of peace.
The fungus-men found Drizzt's appearance disgusting-as disgusting as he considered them-but they did indeed understand that Drizzt had destroyed the basilisk. For many years the myconids had lived beside the rogue drow, each protecting the life-filled chamber that served as their mutual sanctuary. An oasis such as this place, with edible plants, a stream full of fish, and a herd of rothe, was not common in the harsh and empty stone caverns of the Underdark, and predators wandering along the outer tunnels invariably found their way in. Then it was left to the fungus-men, and to Drizzt, to defend their domain.
The largest of the myconids moved forward to stand before the dark elf. Drizzt made no move, understanding the importance of establishing an acceptance between himself and the new king of the fungus-man colony. Still, Drizzt tensed his muscles, preparing a spring to the side if things did not go as he expected.
The myconid spewed forth a cloud of spores. Drizzt studied them in the split-second it took them to descend over him, knowing that the mature myconids could emit many different types of spore, some quite dangerous. But Drizzt recognized the hue of this particular cloud and accepted it wholly.
King dead. Me king, came the myconid's thoughts through the telepathic bond inspired by the spore cloud.
You are king, Drizzt responded mentally. How he wished these fungoids could speak aloud! As it was?
Bottom for dark elf, grove for myconid, replied the fungus-man.
Agreed-
Grove for myconid! the fungus-man thought again, this time emphatically.
Drizzt silently dropped down off the ledge. He had accomplished his mission with the fungoid; neither he nor the new king had any desire to continue the meeting.
This is such a cute request, I love it! I am also looking for a fungi character, but she is half human half mushroom, and turns into a mushroom when she gets scared. I don’t know where I will find it, but I love that I am not the only one with fungi issues.
Try the Custom Lineage race from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, and suggest that he play as a Circle of Spores Druid.
The Custom Lineage is essentially the Variant Human (found in the Player's Handbook), but with a choice between a skill proficiency and darkvision, as well as medium and small size. It's explicitly designed to be customized and reflavored to fit any atypical race.

There's no official mushroom race, but there are myconids, you could probably find a good homebrew myconid race.

Myconids are published as a playable race in "Player's Companion" on DMs Guild.
Mushroomfolk, in "Underworld Player's Guide" from Kobold Press.
Just modify the Gnome race until it’s basically just Toad from Super Mario
I would reskin a Ghostwise Halfling and say their telepath is from spores.

There is also the Vegepygmy (Volo’s, p 196)
A good fit for such might be the Stout Halfling (Resilience) or the Forest Gnome (replace speak with Animals to be speak with plants?)
