So, i'm going to be DMing Rime for a group of friends and i was looking into races n things and rules, because thats what every DM should do. What i was mainly looking at is what races would really benefit in a Frozen Hellscape and my first thought was "Oh Warforged". Yeah, no....1. For some reason the robots built to be killing machines cannot see in the dark...k..? 2. They're required to wear winter clothes in Rime?. I was reading through a lot of Eberron and Warforged Lore and....why the **** would you build a robot that can feel pain AND CANT SEE IN THE DARK!?!?! Like Winter just swats them no wonder they ******* lost lol.
What are some things you've done/have seen for Rime that might be interesting to add? I was looking into the trinkets for the secrets and i really like this idea and was wondering what other DM's are doing/did do?
How are DM's handling Igloos? I mean with the right knowledge you can build an igloo in like...4-5 hours and thats without magic...What stops my players from being like "Naw Igloo, **** that tent?"
Avalanches - I am a player in a game of Rime as they just seem way-WAY too ******* deadly. 1 level of exhaustion and anyone that isn't strength based will die in that ***** and if they go near the mountain AT ALL levels 1-3 its pretty much a deadly encounter that can happen 20% of the time? Like wow what? Like i know Avalanches can be deadly, but the like 2-3 i've been in i was able to literally sit on top of the snow like a REALLY fast river. What are yall doing for this?
How fast does a Axebeak run in snow? I for the life of me cannot find it in the book it just says something about it's feet and that it's essentially a bird-donkey.
Has anyone tried to bring the baby white dragons back to "mommy"? This seems like an interesting idea that actually WEIRDLY seems plausible?
About igloos: If the players actually HAVE that knowledge, sure, cool, let them sleep in an igloo that they built. It'll make them feel proud of themselves. If that gets under your skin for some reason, say that it's the wrong kind of snow. If they DON'T have that knowledge, but they think they do because one of the players saw a show on the Discovery Channel or something, then let them "save" 2 lousy gp, not buy a tent, and spend the night in the howling freezing wind trying to construct an igloo. Survival roll DC 20. If they fail, I think you're justified in giving them a level of exhaustion.
I'm not changing a thing about avalanches. I want this to be scary. If I'm playing with a bunch of avalanche experts, I'll read the avalanche rules with them up front in the session zero, listen to any grievances, but ultimately take the position that the game isn't called Avalanche Simulator 2K21, and that the ad hoc rules presented are good enough to go forward with. If/when the players agree, I can just run the rules as presented with a clear conscience.
An axe beak has a speed of 50. I think they're in the MM.
Thanks, yeah the igloo thing doesn't bother me, but a few of the players PC are native to Icewind DAle and i figured they might know how. And 50 feet? Wow, though't it'd be faster.
I don't know how igloos are actually used, but the time involved sounds like they're more built for at minimum a "base camp" structure than simply an overnight shelter. 4-5 hours of arguably exhaustion triggering labor for an igloo is still time and the time estimate probably isn't based on the darkened conditions of Icewind Dale etc. So you'll have to factor in movement time, "igloo construction time" and then actual rest time when figuring out the party's pace. Tents will probably be faster (unless you've got someone with the right magic).
50' for the AxeBeak is still faster than most humanoids. They're basically the setting's tauntauns, not bullet trains.
Well, keep it simple and say that only characters with a survival proficiency are going to have training in igloo building. It isn't necessarily a native form of snow shelter in Icewind Dale. The Reghed tribesmen seem to live in yurts or tents that I assume they make from the hides of the reindeer or whatever that they herd. If people just want to dig out a little quinzee, maybe say that it's a lower DC and you don't have to have proficiency, but it's a temporary structure that you can only use once, so how many times do you want to spend 2-3 hours digging? Then say DC 15 and if they fail, they get a level of exhaustion and failed to get a long rest because the roof fell in on them in their sleep. Something like that.
If igloos seem free to your players, then you're making their time worthless. Out of the four outs of dim daylight they have, it should take at least a few hours to construct the shelter. That's it.. that's their whole day. Let them do that once and when they realise they could have actually done something else, they shouldn't try that again.
As far as avalanches go, they are very confusing and complicated to actually run. I made a thread about my gripes with these on the forums here, but there wasn't a lot of input from others about it. As written though, it's pretty hard for players to avoid being crushed, without magical means. If you stave off their first encounter with one till they are level three however, they ought to be able to survive the damage and dig themselves out, which makes avalanches more of an annoying hassle than a threat. After running one already and finding it to be difficult to communicate (and the players finding it confusing), I doubt I'll be doing another one.

Watch yer language, mister.
Enjoy my magic items, spells, monsters, my race, and a few feats. And GIVE ME FEEDBACK... or else.
Like what I say?
⬐ Just press this little guy right here.
Warforged - the important thing to note is that they are not robots. They are magically created sentient lifeforms.
As for igloos - sure, allow them to spend the time doing that if you like. Possibly requires decent survival proficiency?
