What is Random Encounter Monday? Well, it is where I take a randomly generated combination of monsters and write a suitable encounter as a design challenge!
For me this is week #21, so we're back to a party of five 1st-level characters!
This week's prompt, what encounter comes to mind for including a tridrone and a gray ooze? Where do you find them? How do the two interact?
A group of modrons, led by the tridrone 0011010, were sent to investigate an anomaly, a region of wild magic, deep in the shadowed caverns of the Underdark. The fluctuating magic destroyed all of the modrons besides 0011010, whose processors were corroded by a gray ooze. 0011010 keeps the grey ooze in a small glass vial, and the tridrone now believes that its sole duty is to rid the world of all chaos- meaning any creature that is not as lawful as it is.
Upon noticing any characters, 0011010 declares that they must be eradicated to ensure the dominance of Law. A player can attempt to reason with 0011010 with a successful DC 13 Persuasion or Deception check, in which case the modron allows them safe passage through the area in which it resides. On a failed check, 0011010 throws the vial containing the grey ooze at the player nearest to it and attacks. Each creature within 5 feet of the vial when it shatters must succeed on a DC 11 Dexterity saving throw or take 1d4 piercing damage. The grey ooze attacks whatever creature is closest to it, and 0011010 goes after which every player has the farthest alignment from Lawful Neutral.
A player within 5 feet of 0011010 can use their action to attempt to repair its circuits by making a successful DC 14 Arcana or Sleight of Hand check. On a successful attempt, 0011010's processors are repaired and it apologizes for its irrational behavior before asking them to help it return to the surface. Whether they say yes or no, it gifts the group a Clockwork Amulet, or alternatively, they can take the amulet upon 0011010's demise.
But could the area of wild magic be the sign of a greater threat in the Underdark? And why didn't any beings from Mechanus check in on the fate of 0011010 and the other missing modrons?
Wild Magic Due to the wild magic affecting the area where 0011010 resides, spells don't always work as intended. Whenever a spell is cast within 300 feet of 0011010's residence, roll a d20. On a roll of 17 or higher, roll on the table below for additional effects.
Wild Magic
d20
Effect
1-4
The spell works as usual, but instead targets the caster. If the spell already targeted the caster, it instead targets a random creature within 30 feet of them.
5-7
The spell fails and the caster takes 1d4 force damage.
8-10
A thunderous boom echoes out from the caster. Each creature within 10 feet of them must succeed on a saving throw against the caster's spell save DC or be deafened until the end of their next turn.
11-13
The caster turns amorphous and blobby. For one minute, their movement speed is reduced by 10 feet and they can move through spaces as narrow as 1 inch without squeezing.
14-16
The caster gains a flying speed of 10 feet for 1 minute as small wings sprout from their back. If they already have a flying speed, it increases by 10 feet.
17-20
The target of the spell flashes rainbow hues and sheds dim light in a 5-foot-radius for 1 minute.

Leminy Temwic was a gnomish artificer and would-be world conqueror, whose greatest goal in life was to raise an army of constructs to overrun the world and make him its emperor. You know, simple stuff. His opportunity came after the last Modron March, when he came across an injured tridrone he kept the thing in a magically induced stasis, so he could study it without it dying or breaking free. Unfortunately, Leminy was a bit overeager, so he attempted to build his first modron without properly studying his specimen and taking all the right precautions, so when he applied a blast of raw magic to kickstart it... things went poorly. The poor thing wasn't built quite right, and couldn't handle all that energy. This resulted in its body getting... overloaded, more or less, and "reversing" itself, going from law to chaos, dissolving into a grey ooze. The ooze went ahead and consumed the suprised Leminy, as well as much of his stasis equipment, causing the tridrone to wake up again, though its mind was still damaged by both its original accident that led it to Leminy, and the numerous experiment performed on it.
When the players enter Leminy's little hut, they immediately encounter both the ooze, which leaps from the corroded shell of the replica modron and attacks, and the tridrone, which wildly swings at anything in its path, howling and gibbering. After both monsters are dealt with, the hut has much to offer. While the majority of Leminy's items were destroyed by the blast and the ooze, there are still 1-3 undamaged items from magic item table A scattered about, as well as a decent amount of money in raw materials.

Yoo these are incredible! Always love using the encounters as a opportunity to give magical items or give personality to a random modron.
Thank you all for participating!
Thank you so much! I had a lot of fun brainstorming how the two monsters might interact with each other. Just out curiosity, how do you choose which monsters to use in the prompt?

There is the fantastic Kobold Fight Club! I select a level and then slap the Random Medium encounter a few times. I don't take the first few options, I wait until I find one that speaks to me or has an interesting challenge to design around!
