At the risk of beating a dead horse...and I mentioned this in a few other places...it seems if you create a homebrew race WITH subraces, it only shows the subraces in the Character Builder.
That is to say:
I created Bearfolk. They have the GRIZZLEHIDE or PURIFIER subrace. However, in the drop-down choose a race tab in the character builder, my players can only see GRIZZLEHIDE & PURIFIER. They see no entry for Bearfolk (thus have a harder time accessing info about the parent race).
Compared to an official race...like Dwarves. Here in the character builder we see DWARF (3 subraces) Click on it, and then via the process of that we get to choose the subrace.
This latter and official option seems better and more clear.
Is this a problem with the creation of all homebrew races?
This is intended and is the way that its designed to work.
Wait-- really? I thought it was an oversight. :(
I hope that they reconsider, as it looks downright awful if you have a homebrew race with more than one or two subraces. I was so excited when the change was introduced and figured they would be fixing it when the changes to the homebrew system were implemented in the undetermined future.
Disagree with the design choice! But, I suppose there are valid reasons I'm not thinking of.
Thanks for the quick turnaround! And, the homebrew tutorials...I'm stumped on making a Natural Armor one for a race...I'll watch and see if it unlocks something for me.
The D&D Beyond team really value user feedback on design, so I expect that this will change.
I was pointing out that it was designed that way, rather than it being a bug. :)
Please change this to allow nesting of SubRaces under races. What do we have to do to put in this feature request? I'm a huge fan of organization and this change to allow us to have:
Race
>>SubRace1
>>SubRace2
And thereby allowing us to pick this HomeBrew race as a Race group is organizational and functional.
I am trying to do something and I don't know if I overestimated the functionality of the homebrew race builder or just am not familiar enough with it yet. hope I can get some help. I am trying to add a feature that allows one of my subraces to be able to cast a specific set of spells starting at 3rd level. I want the three spells to be added to the list on the character sheet but for all three to use the same resource of once per short rest. as in the player has the option to cast one of these three spells innately and they can do so once per short rest but they don't have to cast the same one of the three each time. they can switch every time.
So far I have not figured out how to do this without the player either having to choose one of the spells in the character builder to be added to their sheet or each spell being listed with the option to be cast once per rest. BTW i am still new to the homebrewing and using these forums so please give me some leway on that.
HI, everyone. I have a simple question and this seems to be the most appropriate thread to ask. I'm so impressed with the Homebrew Races that have been created, but I can't seem to find any method of filtering Races, Variants and Subraces from one another on the Homebrew Race Page. Feel like it's staring me in the face and I just can't see it or is this something on the D&D Beyonds' long list of things to do? If so does anyone know a workaround for the time being or am I stuck scrolling through manually?
Probably quite late but I would appreciate the change to nesting sub-races within a overall race. I'm currently working on a race with 5 sub-races and it clutters the list quite a lot. Thanks Keep up the good work, I appreciate everything DnDbeyond has done so far
Is it possible to have a homebrew race or subrace be automatically granted a feat? I've tried several methods (options under a racial trait, modifier under a racial trait, both of the prior) and none seem to work, short of creating a character and then manually adding the feat directly on their sheet.

Or, if you want to add a specific feat, choose that instead of "choose a feat".

How would I add the selection of lets say breath weapon from a dragonborn if i had a previous dragon selection for a racial trait? Like I pick black dragon ancestry. how do i make that effect the determination of the next racial trait so that it's relevant to black dragon breath weapon?
Make a feature for the choices of dragon ancestry. When making a new racial feature give it options and you will have a box that lets you link it to a previous feature option. For an example go to make a race and choose to copy dragonborn - it does exactly what you seem to want so you can see how it is done and do it for your own homebrew race.

Is there a way to modify the skill list of a character? I don't want to give them proficiency, but I want to add to the list of skills they are allowed to take proficiencies from.

As far as doing so with race, there really isn't a need for that as characters don't get choices in skills unless they have a trait that does so and also provides proficiency.
If you're looking at it in a different context, such as with class skill choices, that is baked into the base class and isn't something you can add to.
Any update on the Subrace / Variant's nesting inside the Homebrew Race instead of every subrace / variant being in the list of available races?
I ask because I was planning to make a huge Race for Demigods of each pantheon (Faerun, Norse, Egyption, etc.) and then have Subraces / Variants for each God. If I go through with this it will really muddy up character creation on my campaigns.
Edit below:
After scrolling a bit I'm not the only one looking to see this change made, is there another space we can put in and or vote on design updates?
Flash forward a year. My son and I have been working on a race with various subraces for a few hours now. Is the nesting inside the race still not an option? There is a Race Group drop down but our custom race is not showing up as an option. We plan to keep the race private.

Is anyone else having trouble adding a Homebrew Feat as a Race Trait to a Homebrew Race?

I am not sure how you missed this but..
Add Modifier >> Modifier Type: Feat >> Modifier Subtype: Choose a Feat.
