Is there still not a way to homebrew a feat that either increases the number of spells that can be prepared or increases the number of spell slots at a given level?
I see a bunch of older posts stating this isn't possible without a bunch of wonky workarounds. Has this improved at all over the years?
I have come up with something of a homebrew rule I've been working on. I've been looking for something similar in the forums, haven't looked at the homebrew section of ddb yet (as there's so much), but it utilizes hit dice in a different way. So far they're used to restore hit points during a short rest (as far as I know).
When watching shows or animes I've noticed some people casting spells become injured or debilitated in some way resulting in pale skin, getting sick, or even bleeding from facial orifices. So I thought about what if one could generate a spell slot in the heat of combat? Scouring through the rules I noticed hit dice go very unnoticed. So how about using them to make to make spell slots with a hindrance or negative side effect.
For every hit dice used it generates a spell slot. The side effect is the player rolls the dice and takes that much damage to their hit points. This also reduces the amount of hit dice one could use during a short rest. Ultimately the player with a ninth level spellcaster could potentially generate a ninth level spell slot and then could also kill themselves in the process. I'm still flushing out the rate at which one can generate slots and the storyteller would have discretion on what other negative aspects happen to the character as this would be considered atleast a chaotic act or at most an evil one depending on the perspective of certain societies within the realm of one's group and the views of npc societies and such.
If something like this has come up in a thread somewhere else I apologize if not I might concider opening up an original post.

For the most up to date information please see the FAQ: (https://www.dndbeyond.com/forums/dungeons-dragons-discussion/homebrew-house-rules/131411-a-homebrewers-how-to-faq) I personally manage that FAQ and keep it updated regularly. Currently it is still not possible to do what you want.

Disappointing, but thanks for the information. Also thanks for the link; I didn't know there was a regularly updated FAQ.
There wasn’t, so I made one.
