I am currently trying to make a way for my PCs to engage in a sort of "DnD Chess" together. I want them to use the normal DnD monster stat-blocks and form a team/unit of those creatures. I want them to be able to develop and draft their teams on their own and then show up and play (similar to how Trading Card Games, TCGs for short, allow players to experiment on their own).
I had the idea of allotting each creature size a value.
and each player gets a certain amount of points they can use to purchase creatures and draft them onto their team. I thought 12 points would be sufficient.
BUT, I don't want them to make insanely unbalanced teams. (i.e. a lich only takes one point to draft. Or Tiamat invalidating any creature it opposes)
So how should I go about balancing these encounters?

Small/Medium: 1 point
Large: 2 points
Huge: 4 points
Gargantuan: 8 points
