Hi All, I'm trying to create a spell that has charges instead of using spell slots. However, I cannot for the life of me, find an option to add them. I know its possible as another party member in my campaign has an action with charges. However, it might be an innate thing, still learning.
Effectively I'm creating a character that only uses thrown potions and has a limited number of charges every day. I haven't yet found a clean way to implement this as I would like it to appear in the actions or spells section. Please let me know if y'all have a better solution for this or know where I can find charges, thanks.
It is not possible for a spell to use charges unless being cast through a magic item -- the charges are a feature of the magic item, not the spell.
You can create limited uses for spells (can be X times, reset under Y condition) through race, subclass or feats.

would you happen to know which of those options is the best way to go to implement this? Realistically I just need a way to add a feature with charges to my character sheet.
If you describe, specifically, what you are trying to do we can help further.

May I say, you have this idea of having a character only use thrown potions and stuff, but you know the alchemist subclass does that already, no homebrew required? There is a section in the class blurb for spellcasting specifically on reflavouring the magical elements - such as throwing a potion instead of casting a spell and is the entire theme of the alchemist class (drinking potions for themselves and allies, throwing potions to buff allies or harm enemies, etc).
It seems like you're trying to do a lot of extra work, for something you don't need to. You're rewriting a subclass for a gimmick that's already built-in. Just mentioning this in case it saves ya some headaches.
Or, do as Sposta suggested and make the NPC statblock rather than using a PC sheet, since this is for an NPC.

Sure, thanks for the reply. This is also something that I would just like to learn for the future. I'd like to learn best practices and improve with the tools.
Specifically this is what I'm trying to achieve:
Preferably within the actions tab, lists:
action name
action description (can have typed values like range)
charges (# of checkboxes)
modifier (4d4)
Being able to have it register as actual dice in DND Beyond is important to me as we play through Talespire
We use an extension that lets us click on any dice value or modifier on the character sheet, and it will load up those amount of dice with the modifier in game.
EX: Clicking on where it says (2d4 + 2) on the character sheet, automatically loads 2 d4 with a +2 modifier in game, instantly, through the browser extension :).
I am trying to find the best way of implementing something like this. For those just joining, it has been recommended to be done through a race, subclass, or feat. However, I am inexperienced and would like an opinion on the best way forward for implementation
We have lots of custom changes to our characters for our campaign. I'd like to learn how to best implement new character features moving forward, and make those easier for my players. I can give more examples of unique cases my PC's have but thank you for your responses so far.

I cannot thank you enough! I couldn't of imagined someone going this far to help. This was exactly what I was looking for and more. I hope you feel better soon and the quality was stellar. I'm new to the DND Beyond community but you guys are AMAZING.
