Is is possible to copy published homebrew content and use that for a base of homebrew content for your group?
I have found a player race that is close to what I want to use in one of my campaigns, but not quite.
Is it possible to copy that race to my content and then make my modifications to it, or do I need to start from scratch? I don't see a need to publish it and don't want to steal the original creator's thunder, but would like to use that as a base for my own race that will be used just for my group.
I can use their creation, but have to start from scratch and manually create the race, I can't import what they have already and modify it for my game?
Correct. There is not import function for outside homebrew content, and I don't think you can modify homebrew added to your collection that someone else created.
I second the desire for being able to base new homebrews on someone else's homebrew. I am frequently wanting to do that. I like the monster but want to change it's attack, or like the magic item but want to add a power.

D&D Beyond FoundersYou may make any homebrew you like for private use, as long as it doesn't contravene the site rules & guidelines.
In this case, it is only when publishing homebrew that there is a concern for copyright.
In short, yes, you can create your own version of someone else's homebrew and use it privately with just you and your campaign.
