Hello all! I am DMing a small one-shot for my birthday which involves three friends and three family members. Everyone has basically rolled their characters already and the campaign will be in about a week and a half. My dad is playing a bard and he picked a quarterstaff for his weapon, but today he asked me if he could make some adjustments to it. He pictures the quarterstaff with a kind of tether that is coiled inside of the staff, but it has a wrist strap so it can be thrown small distances and pulled back quickly. He imagines the staff to be about 6 feet long and the tether to only be about 4 feet. I told him that I would have to consult with some people but that I guessed that these modifications would make it so that when thrown it has a range of 10 feet and that it would be a bonus action to pull the weapon back. Additionally, taking the loop off/putting it on would either be a bonus or a free action. I thought about lessening the damage die but it is already only a d6 when used one-handed. He imagined being able to throw it and hit an enemy, pull it back, and then hit another guy at melee range but I explained to him that this would not work as he only has one attack. This was agreeable to him but he still desires to have the ability to throw it and pull it back. Does what I have make sense with the range to hit and the bonus action to pull back? Are there any modifications you would suggest? Thanks!
Yep, these times you can tell him that at higher level he'll be able to do so, but he needs to earn experience points for it first. :) (Well done by-the-way, DMing for your own father must be incredible!)
Wielding something like that with any effectiveness would be virtually impossible in real life, but for a one-shot with your dad, go for it! Your modifications should keep it from being too much more powerful.
For longer time use i'd suggest just to add the returning ability since that already exists and the rules for it are quite good and pretty much in the spirit of the weapon.
If this isn't an option maybe think of using enchanted rubber, something easily added to make the use of the item possible if physically being able to pull the weapon back is a needed feature.

You can throw the weapon up to 10 ft, and use a bonus action to pull it back. If you so desire you can make an DC 15 athletics check when pulling it back. If you succeed you may make a single weapon attack with the staff against a creature you can see within 5 ft of you. If you fail the check the staff flying chaotically through the air and you have to use an action to pull it back.

I think that sounds like the perfect compromise for an odd request. :)
