Hi, so I'm new here and I posted about this in the general forum before I realized this forum existed. Sorry if this is spamming posts a bit.
I am interested in using D&D Beyond for an up coming campaign, but we've decided to homebrew races and classes, so that classes provide the +2/+1 ability score increases rather than race.
What I'm curious about is how I would do this in D&D Beyond. If I owned the licence for the PHB here, would I be able to modify the races/classes in there to create homebrew versions of them or would I need to create all the races/classes from scratch? Rewriting up every race and class to make this one change seems like a lot of effort, but if I could just add/delete these features to the existing PHB classes/races and save them as private homebrew, that would be ideal.
You can create homebrew copies of any race that you own on D&D Beyond (without purchase you can do this with any Basic Rules race), and edit the features as you like. Have fun!
So, I'm trying to do this, and it isn't working. There doesn't appear to be a way to start with Half-Elf, for example, then delete one trait just to replace it with another, and have the job done with. That's really all I need, but it doesn't appear to be possible. For example, I need to modify/edit/switch out the age section, and delete fey ancestry altogether. It shouldn't be this hard to modify an existing race in DND beyond. Sure, I could copy and paste to pull it off in text, but the point is being able to use the race in the character builder.
Sorry, I would have responded sooner but I only just saw your post. My apologies. In answer to your question, you don’t modify the existing half-elf, you create your own version of it. Use the following link and make a “variant race” for the half-elf race: (https://www.dndbeyond.com/homebrew/creations/create-race). Like this:
From there you want to set up your variant race like this:
