Today’s monster is a little taste of home. Our home game, to be precise. We’ve been short on time so this is a monster written for our DM to use in the current arc of our story, set in the City of the Dead, ruled by The Emperor and his two High Priests (Thoughts of Vecna!).
The Thought of Vecna in Lore is the head of an Organ of Vecna, an Organ being each congregation within Vecna’s church. They are middling in the ranks of Vecna’s followers, but still very powerful in their own right.
Favouring necromancy, in the right environment the Thought of Vecna can maintain a near-endless stream of undead minions to wear away at attackers while using attackers own life force to animate more undead, and so the cycle continues. Elsewhere, the Thought of Vecna still has its own foul magic to defend itself, and even in defeat, the Thought of Vecna has the last laugh as its remains decay and reanimate as the terrifying Cleavergaunt.

Inspired by the art of Josh “Skull” Dixon, The geo-gnomes are tiny earth elementals that make excellent, if not a tad dopey, familiars for geomancers and druids.
Though they are mostly placid creatures are very content eating dirt and rocks, geo-gnomes can use some innate earth magic and tunnel through the ground, able to defend themselves an escape when threatened.

Some things go together, like cheese and wine. Some things don’t, like Gibbering mouthers and beholders.
So when a gibbering mouther consumes a beholder, it can go wrong, and result in a horrifying abomination. The gibbering ball is such an abomination. A floating ball of flesh and eyes and mouths, ceaseless gibbering, and an area of anti magic combine elements of each creature in this unnatural and unnerving pairing.

The Pact Victim is a minor devil, looked down upon by “real” devils as cowardly mortals that are pushing their luck and the limits of the pact. Pact Victims have their uses however as they tend to be cunning and cruel as only humans can truly be.
A pact victim seeks to break the limits imposed on it by the contract that lays claim to its soul, should they find a mortal that is willing to sign their soul over then the pact victim can use this collateral to bargain their way out of their pact and become a true devil. Pact victims that earn their freedom in such methods tend to develop a taste for being on the strong side of the bargain and seek out more mortal souls to claim.
Pact victims plan their actions out, using their invisibility or familiars to scout and plan ahead. When in danger a pact victim will attempt to send a foe to hell and cast spells to shock and awe their opponents before using their invisibility and flight to escape.

In the middle of the lake, there is what looks to be the peak of a mound of gold and treasure emerging from the surface. As the adventurer draws close, the island moves, a great maw opening up from beneath the water to swallow them whole.
The gold fish is an attempt at something a little different, a low CR gargantuan monster. I’ve always felt that low level campaigns lacked any kind of epicness to the monsters that are normally thrown at them, and this fills that whole as well as offering something a little different. To really have fun with this, adding an additional lure for the players such as a stranded animal will help to confuse matters for them.

The elsewhale might find a home in your campaigns even if its a brief one, appearing in the skies to startle your adventurers. If they can communicate with the elsewhale perhaps it has some useful information from its travels.
Another use for the elsewhale is as a quest location, the party must intercept the whale, battle it long enough to distract it, climb inside it's mouth and battle any of the dangerous denizens to find the hermit with the answers to their plot essential questions. The old person that lives inside the elsewhale is an excellent NPC I encourage you to steal.

The bonework behemoth may not be a bonegrafter’s crowning achievement, but it will almost certainly be their largest achievement.
As a ball of rubber bands is to an office worker, the behemoth is a side project, made of cut-offs and leftovers of their more intricate works, and its size is indicative of the amount of time a bonegrafter has been performing their craft.
Very little drives the behemoth beyond the desire to eat. Not that it needs to eat, nor gets any nutrition from eating creatures. Many speculate that it simply likes the way it feels.

The magic missile toad is a reasonably deadly monster because it never misses. Fuelled by the unerringly accurate magic missile spell the toad is a living weapon and throws itself with full force into combat.
Should your adventurers be travelling in a swamp or through a patch of wild magic, the magic missile toad is the perfect curveball to throw them. Your adventurers will second guess any animals they see for weeks after.

Stumbling forwards, the Father Crit Mass seems to be little more than a zombie emitting a sickening energy, which while harmful, isn’t particularly threatening. Allow it to build up its field long enough however, and it’ll be painful lesson.
If I ran these I’d throw them in with a bunch of lower CR undead to buy time for them to build up their energy. If the players see them actively hurting the other undead they might consider it a smart tactic to let these beacons keep hurting them, buying time to let the big burst happen.

Loved by children and adults of all ages, gingerbread and the men made from it are a common treat found in bakeries everwhere.
Now and then, an ambitious baker may attempt to make some enchanted gingerbread men. For the mostpart, these treats are happy little bundles of energy that will zip around until the time that they are willingly eaten.
With every batch, there are gingerbread men gone “bad”, and these nasty little critters are malicious and will fight with every fibre of their being not to be eaten. They will run, hide, make makeshift weapons, and try and kill their captors. Bon appetit.

The Muffin Man did it again, and brought to life more baked goods. This time, he’s really outdone himself, baking a full sized dragon. Nine times out of ten, these impressive cookies will draw in crowds and generally look imposing and impressive, though every now and then there will be one bad bake that will terrorize the town or ruin a baking competition.

Down an old alleyway filled with long closed shops, one door still remains open for business. If one were to watch the doorway for long enough, *subtly enough* then they might learn of a face or two from the less official side of the city. Venture inside, and they would see all manner of curios. Strange coins, mundane items with interesting tales and items which could allow someone of the right mindset to find applications that were less than entirely legal. Among these items, they find a jar with a strange black, shifting mass inside. The salesman sees their interest, and asks if they would be interested in any snake oil…
The Snake Oil is a nasty little elemental, though the particular type of flammable grease it is made of has many applications, some less savoury than others.
Running this, I wouldn’t tell the players that the oil left on them leaves them vulnerable to fire damage, though I would certainly mention the strong odour of the oil snake. It’s always possible a player will light up the oil snakes themselves, if not it might be fun to watch them wandering round covered in oil while their next heated encounter awaits them.
