Like the title implies, I'm trying to create the charge blade from the Monster Hunter series. How would I add a different damage die for switching to axe mode, and how can I have the damage from the axes elemental attacks scale with the amount of charges I have. Right now we have decided every time I land an attack I gain a charge to a maximum of 5. I can then use a bonus action while in axe mode to unleash the damage into either the number of stored charges times half my proficiency bonus or a number of d4s equal to the number of charges I have stored up. Is there a way to do both of those and if so can someone explain how please.
You cannot. None of that is currently possible since there is no way to change a weapon’s base damage. You would need to use two weapons, one for “axe mode” and one for normal. And the additional damage for the charges cannot be integrated into the weapon to have it automatically roll that damage. You would need to list it as plain txt and roll the additional damage separately.
For variable effects, you'd need to have it listed in the text of the weapon.
Since the weapon is basically one-handed then changes to two-handed in axe mode, just make the weapon versatile - which is pretty much what versatile is.
