Wilfer turns to David, "What else do you need for this device? We may be better off acquiring any components that are rare or expensive before we acquire the statue. Before Dron's guard is up and he and his people suspicious."
As some of the others talk about having a look at the square and the statue, David asks to join.
"I wouldn't mind getting a closer look at the statue and its base. Try and get an estimate of its weight and see what will be needed to separate it from the base. I figure it's just attached with mortar, but better to be sure."
At Wilfer's question, David cocks his head to the side and thinks through the list.
"Well much of it is going to be just metals, woods and stone's, both precious and mundane, but the special components are:"
David holds up three fingers, folding them done one at a time as he describes the needed components.
"First, an item that is famous or infamous, something that has had a lot of people see it on the regular. The statue will fill this requirement nicely. Everything has an innate magic, it's why wizards and other spell casters often need items to cast their spells. They are tapping into the items connection with the magic they are trying to produce. It's kind of a shortcut to get where you want faster. The statue will allow the device to reach out to more people at greater distances, because of the innate magical nature the items fame has imbued it with."
"Secondly, we're going to need a bunch of items that induce revulsion, disgust, anxiety, fear, aversion and other similar feelings in people. The more varied the better. These components are unlikely to be expensive or necessarily hard to acquire, we may be able to make some of them ourselves, like a cup of vomit, or a full chamber pot. These items will allow the device to induce an aversion to the area covered by the smaller magical field. And don't worry about the smell, I'll be sealing each item in it's own canister."
"And lastly, we're going to need a sufficiently powerful, magical power source to drive the whole thing. Now normally I could make this myself, but it is the slowest and most expensive part to make, and we don't have time for me to spend a year or so to put one together.Thankfully we artificers have some techniques for the transference of magical power sources from one magic item or device, to another. Now there are some limitation, the type of power source needs to be compatible with its new intended use. It's no good trying to use a store, dump and recharge type power source in a device that needs a lower constant charge source to function. And the level of power needs to be a somewhat close match. If the source is too powerful for its new home, it can cause damage to the device or item, greatly shortening its life. If the power is to low, the item may malfunction in unexpected ways, if it will work at all. In all cases, using a mismatched power source will risk the loss of the the power source. When a matching power source is a part of a magic item, there is an effect that keeps everything bound and strong, kind of like a key stone in an arch. When everything is right, its very strong. But the opposite is also true, get a mismatch and the magic can fall apart, again, much like the arch. For our needs, we are going to need a constant flow power source, so something from an item that has an always on effect. So something like a bag of holding for example, only we are going to need an item with a much stronger power source than a mere bag of holding can provide."
David turns back to Vansic,
"I'm hopeful you have some idea's about items that might fit our needs. Myself, I'm only familiar with items that other artificers have made, and seeing as they are my friends and family, even though I've been black listed from the temple, I'd rather not steal from them. If Dron had a suitable item, that would be ideal, but this level of power is a little rarer to come by, so..."
Vansic listens, pleased, as everyone brainstorms some possibilities. He is interrupted three times as everyone discusses by one of his employees, keeping him well and truly silent during the rapid-fire discussion of David's device and the impending job.
Eventually, he finds a way into the conversation. "I think you have the right idea, lady and gentlemen," he says. "We will beginning planning a quick swap in the late evening with the intention of distracting any onlookers. We have the problem of many entrances to the square as well as a clear view from the river."
"So we may need to consider multiple distractions to make this work. We should also figure out how long the transfer will take. I'll talk to someone about the replacement statue. Go scout out the square but not together. See what might pose a problem in getting this done quietly and quickly."
-----------
Each person approaches the square at slightly different times and from different directions, passing through either alone or in pairs. It is the late evening, roughly between 11pm and 1am, and the square is mostly empty during this time. Some pedestrians are drunk and some are not. The watch patrols through every 10-30 minutes. Dim, flickering streetlights light the square. They appear to be mundane and not magical in nature. Seven entrances to the square are reasonably wide, at least 10 feet across. Another 5 alleys are visible as well, ranging from 4 to 6 feet wide. The statue stands in the middle of the square. At its longest point, by the river, the square is easily 750 feet across. At its shortest, it is perhaps 350-400 feet across. From the river to the market buildings, it is perhaps 450 feet at its widest. The statue is easily 150 feet from the nearest building, alley, or street.
Tonight, the moon is waxing in a clear sky. Visibility is thus quite clear. In order to find out any more specific information about the square, the watch, the statues, or any other possible variables of concern, walk your characters into the square (again, one at a time or in pairs) and we will RP what happens...
That is a big square for a small statue - seems like we can use that. Some basic questions - how tall is the pedestal?
Can we tell how the statue is attached?
Can you drive a cart right up next to it, or how close can you get?
What does this space get used for in the daytime?
- It is 6 feet tall and about 6x6 at it's top and 8x8 at its base.
- Not without climbing up onto it
- You can get within 8 feet of it. A gardened area encircles the statue.
- It is a market square during the daytime, including a space near the river for scheduled performers. It is usually very busy. All market stalls must be packed up at night. Many of the nearby buildings serve as rented storage, at least in part, for the sellers who do not want to move their stalls far at closing.
Wilfer thinks over the gathered information, "As far as our distraction goes, perhaps a performance from the river? Start it where the river enters the square and run through the whole square, continuing on as it goes past, promising beer or spirits further along and slip out before we get there? It has the advantage of keeping us far enough away to prevent physical interaction with any illusions or disguises we use, and it'll gather up everyone who might be in the square and lead them all away from the action. We can have another person or two take care of any stragglers. Say two of us to switch the statue, two to take care of stragglers, and two for the performance from the river?"
After wandering past the statue to get some basic information Sharvon turns to Tug. "Well tug, what do you know?" The old question, asked hundreds of times, but this time there might be a good answer.
We were talking about timing earlier - it takes just a moment per move ((it is an action)). And now we see the spacing - we can easily get the cart in my range of 30 feet. So it comes down to Tug answers Sharvon Can I do this? Tug uses Telekinetic Movement to lift the stature of Lendover bent over a couple inches and set back in place - does it work?

Of course too good to be true. Why expect a ton of sculpture to stay in place when you can affix it? Paranoid, I call it. I mean, we are up to mischief but why would you plan on that? No faith in human nature, I call it...
Sharv wanna go up there? or maybe David's little friend?

"No problem Tug, I will take a look." Handing Tug his cloak, Sharvon will use the hat of disguise and change his appearance to that of a large weather worn man, maybe in his mid forties. He want a to look like a architect, so if this city has a guild he will affix it's symbol on his hat. He then heads right to the base of the statue and begins to examine it, talking to himself, like he is taking mental notes.

As Tug and Sharvon are stomping about the landscaping surrounding the statue, one mustachio'd man with a cane stops to watch them. Sharvon notes that the statue is clearly attached with six steel anchors around its edge and says as much to Tug.
"No reason you'd need to know that," the mustachio'd man says. He is perhaps in his 50s and wearing clothing suitable for a craftsperson. "Nor the other three steel pins around the center. You boys up to some trouble?"

Tug was trying to stay off the garden, he could work from 30 feet away. He defers to Sharv in the whole 'dealing with people' thing, but moves around a bit behind the fellow in case a grapple becomes called for. Not for nothing, he says, why so many pins and why are you counting them? Seems suspicious

The mustachio'd craftsperson nods. "Best thing you can do for that, m'boy, is apprentice with the stonemasons the city contracts with." he says, then turns to Tug. "After all, that is what I did and how I know about the statue. I was an apprentice with Durk Longtooth when he won the bid to refurbish that statue 26 years ago."
The gentleman turns his attention back to "Tazemn", saying, "Talk to the guild about apprenticeship placement if need it. It sounds like you haven't had enough training if you are trying to pry into the secrets of something as simple as a statue's anchor."
Looking very sheepishly at the ground, Tazemn nods, "you are very correct good sir, to think you studied with Durk Longtooth himself!" Tazemn looks up a smile on his face, "thank you sir. Your words are a big help!" With that Tazemn heads off, picking his way carefully through the garden.
Because Sharvon never could get when the getting was good. "Sir" he says stopping and turning to face the man, "could I please, if I may be so bold, ask you for a anecdote about Durk Longtooth?"
