Travis accepts the guidance and good wishes of his companions. Before he heads off on his own into the maw of battle, he looks to Inglenook, taking a knee to speak to the gnome eye to eye. “ I thank you for the gift of light,” he says. “ Should I not return, be sure the young boy stays well.”
He takes the hammer from Kiari. “Thank you. Though I hope my sword will be my deliverance, another weapon can never hurt.”
@Travis, The shield feels about the same as other metal shields you have worn or tried.
Nighthill turns to the professor and replies, "It looks to me that the dragonborn has drawn a crude circle about 15 feet wide just below us, and we are about 30 feet up here in the office." He gestures out the window to the circle. He also looks concerned about something and says, "The cultist says the dragonborn holds his honor as a warrior higher than anything else...aside from Tiamat, of course."
Turning away from the party, Nighthill shouts down below: "We have a champion who will face you in one-on-one combat. He will join you in the circle by himself, and we will not aid him with any other warriors. He will be with you shortly."
The professor will walk with Travis to the gate. “Listen, this dragonborn looks strong but overconfident. Take it slow with him and feel him out in the beginning. Look for tells or signs in his attacks that you can use to see where the next attack is coming from. Don’t go blowing everything you have in the first moments! You’ll exhaust yourself and be done for. Nice and slow, block, counter, evade. I’ll be watching and try to shout some encouragement and tips as you go.”
Bardic inspiration. For 10 minutes, you can add 1d6 to one ability check, attack roll, or saving throw. This can be added after seeing the roll, but before knowing the outcome.

Cale finds a spot on the battlements where he can hide in darkness if possible, extinguishing torches there if he has to. He wants to keep in range of the dragonborn if possible (80ft)
Cale douses some lights up on the battlements and is just within range of the dragonborn. He once again melts into the shadows.
Nighthill again thanks the companions and motions Escobert over to escort Travis and the professor. Once downstairs, Escobert unlocks the gate and salutes Travis. The dragonborn smiles with a wide grin to reveal pointy teeth all neat in a row. He beckons Travis to join him in the circle as the kobolds set up a crude wooden structure in the shape of a circle with a wooden roof on top to cover the ring..
Not expecting him to do badly but not entirely trusting the Dragonborn to fight fair, Kirari finds a place where she can get to him quickly should the need arise, be in in the office or just on the other side of the door leading out to it. She will watch the fight carefully from whichever vantage point she may find comfortably. Concentrating on the guidance until he uses it. He will have a minute to do so, so may not be long enough.
Travis listens carefully to Thaddeus's words, nodding at each point, all of which make sense.
"Thank you for the guidance, professor,"he says a bit glumly. "I shall try my best to execute the plan, but as a wise man once said 'Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face. I imagine that applies to being breathed upon with dragon breath as well."*
A moment later, he also gladly accepts the gift of divine guidance from Kirari. "Should I not return, be sure to do what you can to help these people,"he says.
His stern expression betrays perhaps a hint of apprehension at the coming battle as he turns and walks steadily to the arena. He returns Escobert's salute before stepping in to stand across from the dragonborn. He looks his opponent in the eye as it flashes its nasty teeth at him.
"I have come to fight you,"Travis says flatly. "Release the prisoners and we will get to this."He checks his shield on his left forearm (using his own, not the town's), recalls Inglenook's instruction about the magical light, then slowly draws his sword, standing still, watching for any telltale signs the dragonborn warrior is about to strike.

The Dragonborn lets out a roar and says, "Well met, and let's get to this! As a sign of good faith, I will let the little girl go, but to make sure you are honorable, I will instruct my kobolds to kill the woman at the first sign of any foul play. What do we have if not our honor as fighters?" He points to a kobold, and the kobold holds a knife to Lillian.
The Dragonborn raises his weapons and prepares to strike. Let's have Travis roll initiative!
Cale is dismayed to see a roof placed on the arena, but realises it makes sense. He ponders whether to jump the wall of the keep and find a better angle to see inside, but then calculates the utility of this against the increased odds of him dying, and comes to the conclusion that his best play is to keep aim on the door of the impromptu arena.
"Come on Trav" he says to himself, "we don't want to have to kill the rest of them without you"
OOC: I am assuming the girl was actually released. If not, I'll
Travis listens to the dragonborn's words, waiting silently, ready to move, while the girl is released. He nods at his opponents explanation of keeping the others as insurance and says in a clear, strong voice, "There will be no foul play."
Travis is ready when the dragonborn makes his first move, and he unleashes a quick, short slash with his longsword, keeping his shield up to ward off whatever move the other fighter may make in return.
Kirari greets the little girl gently and kneels down to see if she is harmed. Whispering softly, "Tommy is well and safe inside the keep. He's been very brave, you would be proud of him." She pulls her blanket from her pack, "I'm sorry, its sadly in need of a laundering, but it will keep you warm." and wraps it about the girl's shoulders to help calm any anxiety she may be experiencing from the encounter.
If she feels that the aid provided by her guidance may be obvious to the Dragonborn in some way, she will allow it to drop to avoid retribution, Otherwise if its subtle enough, she will continue her concentration though not looking directly at Travis.
The little girl smiles broadly and says "Thanks! I am gonna find my little brother!" she wraps the blanket around her shoulders and takes off into the hallways of the keep.
Escobert bars the door but keeps a couple of door viewers open. He sees the professor examining the door and motions him over to get a better look through the 2' square viewer that looks like a little doors with metal bars set into the much larger door of the keep. Thaddeus would be able to see Travis swing and hit the dragonborn on his arm! A little bit of blood starts to come out of the wound
The dragonborn raises his greatsword and attacks Travis with slashing damage!
Kirari grimaces a little as she turns back and see's the hit on Travis but recovers quickly hoping silently to herself that he's got something up his sleeve to recover from that hit. She looks over at Escobert. "Has this Dragonborn done this before? Challenged the keep for a Champion?"

Travis grunts as the dragonborn's sword hits him hard. He manages to deflect a bit of the impact with his mailed forearm, turning a bit of the damage away, but the fighter staggers at the sheer force of the blow.
He catches his breath, shakes his head slightly to clear his thoughts and refocus his energy, then swings his sword hard at his opponent.

Escobert looks to Kiari and says, "We haven't had this happen in many years; most raiding parties are much smaller and less organized. The cultists we captured will only say this dragonborn is a creature of honor who lives for combat."
The dragonborn takes a gash just below his ribs. He snarls at Travis and raises his greatsword again to attack.
