The professor slowly stomps his way up, stopping frequently to catch his breath. “No, no, don’t wait for me. You young fellows go on ahead.” He heaves and winces at the stitches in his sides and rests on a rock while he catches his breath.
Travis moves a bit slowly in his chain mail, keeping a bit back from the others, closer to the professor should the old man need a helping hand or shoulder to lean on as they make their way up.
After traveling on the plateau for a mile or so, you would be able to make out that a small group of humanoids have set up a camp in the middle of the pathway below. They do not seem to notice you up on the ridge as they are focused on whatever they are cooking. There are some additional natural ramps on either side of the plateau that would allow you to get down to the camp or bypass it entirely to the east.
Kirari attempts to use cover as she approaches the area above the camp, not wishing to be spotted, and tries to gather how many of them there are and what sort of humanoid. perception18 .
Kiari and Cale are both able to get a pretty good look at the camp, and although Kiari accidentally kicks a couple of rocks loose, the folks in the camp are far too absorbed in their work and loud arguments to notice.
In the camp, you would see four cultists and six kobolds. It looks like the kobolds are arguing about the best way to cook a chicken, and a couple demand to keep the feathers on for roasting them. The cultists are arguing about who put the kobolds in charge of the meal prep, and occasionally one shouts curses at the kobolds to hurry up with dinner. It is not quite yet dusk, but the sun is low on the horizon.
There are a couple of mules with bags draped across their bags and a few crude lean-to shelters set up with the cooking fire in the middle, but otherwise, the party has the high ground, and the raider camp is spread out among about 20-30 square yards.
Kirari returns to the others carefully, "I counted four Cultists and six Kobolds having a deep discussion about cooking a chicken feathers on or off and who the genius was that chose to have the Kobolds cook. There are a couple of mules nearby with bags draped over them - likely stolen loot and several lean-to shelters. They look easy game for a surprise attack? What do you think?"
Durnham pants as he catches up to the others at the top of the plateau. Panting he kneels down “what... do.... we... see? Oh gods... I... haven’t.... hiked like that.... ever!”
"I think I could get them fighting more amongst themselves by planting a message in one of their heads. Kobolds vs cultists might be an interesting watch?"
He tilts his head to the side. "I could also create an easy diversion from the opposite direction that might help us get closer unnoticed for our attack?"
Travis considers their options. "If that is truly all of them, we should be able to handle their numbers, especially if we come upon them unaware. It is hard for me to be stealthy, though."
He pauses to consider. "I could approach them without stealth, bearing the shield, swearing vengeance for Greenrest. They likely would not even notice that the rest of you were there before it was too late. And if I were to appear during the confusion of which Ingelnook spoke..." That rare hint of a smile comes to the fighter's face."
"I agree, with a little confusion he'd likely get fairly close. We should be close behind though, not as obvious." Nodding to Travis and then looks to Inglenook. "I'm interested to see this chaos."
@ Kiari, Yes, the mules are tied to a post that looks like it was recently dug into the ground to set camp. They are over next to the shelters. The mules are grazing and don't seem to be phased by the arguments.
The argument over the chicken is getting even more heated, and one kobold has drawn a dagger and is threatening another kobold! The cultists are huddling up and have their backs to the party now.
After catching his breath for a bit, Thaddeus nods as he surveys the camp below. “Yes… it looks as if things are heating up down there with the kobolds. I think it would be good practice to head down and pay them a little visit.” And he smiles wickedly as he reaches around and unslings his crossbow. “We mustn’t let any escape though, it wouldn’t be good for the larger force to know we are coming.” He looks at the group seriously.
Inglenook, with a wicked grin on his face, dives a hand into his pack and rummages around. He withdraws his arm, clasping the wooden cone he used in town to locate the child.
"He he, so exciting!! Let's see if this spurs the fight along!!" He whispers into the cone, then pointing it towards the kobold holding the knife he tries to portray the voice of a nearby cultist....(that will sound in the kobold's head as a whisper)
"Why do we have to put up with these kobolds travelling with us huh? Come on, lets slay them now whilst they fight and we can share that chicken between us!!! On my count. 3.......2......"
And when Travis, Thaddeus and the others are ready to approach. The gnome will cast minor illusion, and create the sound of someone commanding a group of people, shouting, "Chaaaarrrge!!!!!! Go forth and gut these kobolds and cultists. Tear their belongings from their dead bodies!!!
120 ft range for "Message":
You point your finger toward a creature within range and whisper a message. The target (and only the target) hears the message and can reply in a whisper that only you can hear.
You can cast this spell through solid objects if you are familiar with the target and know it is beyond the barrier. Magical silence, 1 foot of stone, 1 inch of common metal, a thin sheet of lead, or 3 feet of wood blocks the spell. The spell doesn't have to follow a straight line and can travel freely around corners or through openings.
1 minute duration and 30ft feet range for "Minor Illusion" - may have to cast to the side rather than directly behind the camp if it doesn't reach, or we're not close enough. Main thing is causing chaos!
If you create a sound, its volume can range from a whisper to a scream. It can be your voice, someone else's voice, a lion's roar, a beating of drums, or any other sound you choose. The sound continues unabated throughout the duration, or you can make discrete sounds at different times before the spell ends.

Kirari nods at the others, "Yes, you're right. Let's take the slope up here. Lead the way."
"Yep, I'm following the big man."
Cale stops a moment to get his breath, hands on hips. He is fit, but the climb is still taxing.
"I agree, let's stay high and keep an eye out"

Cale will try similar to Kiari, taking a slightly wider route in case a different angle offers a chance to see anything else.

Clad in clanky armor, Travis stands back as stealthier allies move ahead to get a better look. He stands ready to move in case hostilities break out.

@DM are the mules tied up?

Cale lines up his bow and prepares to shoot as soon as combat breaks out.
(@DM: can I just check if Cale is within 80ft, or able to get that close while remaining in cover?)
