Rum listens to the conversation with interest, realising that he has led a fairly sheltered life at the monastery. A lot of what is spoken of is far beyond his knowledge, or else it is something he only knows of from books and lectures, seemingly distant and unreal.
The fact that the allies which they planned to make on this continent were in trouble had not escaped him, neither had the fact that they were close to one of the goals of another band that was sent out from the Ivory Tower.
It was Ro’s mention of family that caught his attention most though. If someone threatened the monastery he would find it impossible not to head there to protect those he cared for the most.
He stays quiet and simply listens, but moves a little forward and places a supportive paw on Ro’s shoulder. Not speaking or looking at Ro overtly, just making sure he knew he had some support if needed.
Ruto looked past the band at Commander Cyreus, signalling him with silence that it may be time for him to step in with his military expertise. He moves up to aid her in answering questions while Ruto levels her gaze at Lelith.
"There is no destined hero." She says, cold and flat.
"I have reason to believe that the Hylian Army was mustered." Commander Cyreus says to answer Ro's question. He watches Rum lay a hand on his friends shoulder, but struggles to find anything of comfort to add. "I'm sorry, but the implications don't sound good. If Ganondorf can muster an assault greater than what he ground here or upon the Kokiri, then I have little hope for the castle."
Ruto winced when she heard this.
"To answer your question, we haven't heard specific news about anyone." She said to Ro.
Lelith was angered by the claim and made no attempt to hide it, she sneered as she always did. She was still far from the Princess and made no sudden movements that would alert her guards. She was angry but not foolish. "You should be careful in uttering such blasphemy, Princess Ruto. The Zora Domain is already at its lowest, let us not draw the ire of immortal souls and the Sages that watch over them. Especially when they could have a hand in seeing us through this crisis."
Lelith breathed and let her emotions settle down once more, she was still a bit volatile since the battle or perhaps touching upon her faith was a trigger point... She'd have to work on it. She schooled her expression back into an elegant and pleasant expression. "My apologies for the outburst. May I inquire as to why you would so quick to dismiss the possibility?"
The Princess finally seems to be unsettled by the questions and emotions of her guests. She chews her lip, looking at Lelith, and then steps back and away like she's heading back up to the platform where her parent's thrones are.
"Because there isn't one." She says, very matter of fact, kind of hurt. "If there was, where were they when we needed them most?"
Greko walks back in “I would not count on the other groups for help….one is non responsive and the other is going to a…..circus. Oh pardon me princess. I am Greko the Green. I am sorry about your parents. My companions, I am sure, have filled you in on our mission at hand. It seems though our fates are intertwined. Have we come up a possible plan yet friends?”
That drew Lelith's protests short as she did not break the gaze she held with the Princess for even a single moment, she seemed to have been hit by a physical wave of sadness and depression as she took a step back. It seemed as if right there at that moment, the loss that Princess Ruto experienced had pierced her heart, leaving her to bleed out all of her emotions. Lelith drew back into herself in a pain that looked almost physical. "I can see it now. I understand what you feel, what you are going through better than anyone could at this moment even if it is but a reflection of it. You are far stronger than you believe yourself to be."
Lelith cautiously and slowly approached the Princess, she visibly carried no weapons, and should her approach be unwanted she would drawback. The elf sought to take the Princess' hands into hers as she kneeled in front of her throne, it seemed to comfort Lelith as much as she attempted to comfort Ruto. "I do not know where he is, perhaps he is going through trials of his own at this moment. What I do know, however, is that his spirit and courage is unbroken throughout time. We cannot rely on him, we have our own battles to fight and win just like he does. For now, we have nothing left but hope and belief. We have to believe that despite it all, we will survive this ordeal, honour those who didn't, and light a path for the people we are supposed to protect. How does that sound, Your Highness?"
During the entire exchange, Oten has been standing to the side, silent and still. Assessing the situation, and evaluating his new companion's to be. He mutters to himself, "There is so much we do not know. If we could understand the situation in Hyrule, reopen a line of communication somehow... Hmmm... I fear King Hyrule may be slow to take vital military action. He is ever the diplomat."
He looks up from his thoughts, remembering where he is, and seeing Lelith's impassioned speech to the Princess. "Oh, sorry. Ignore me. Carry on."
"Thank you for answering my question Commander Cyreus and Princess Ruto, I hope that we-" Ro puts a hand over his heart and begins to make a grateful bow before being cut off by Lelith's sudden outburst. Lelith's emotional display was enough to shock Ro out of his own worried state. The elf-dwarf slowly walked towards Lelith, prepared to put a gentle hand on Lelith should she do anything more drastic. As Greko came in the room and inquired about a plan Ro quietly filled him in, "As of now, we're still swapping information to get a better grasp on the situation. No definite plan has been made yet."
As Ro spoke to Greko, Lelith began her approach on the princess. She walked out of his reach before he could stop her, so Ro watched her movements with great intensity. He silently placed a hand over Kazek, preparing to restrain the elf if needed. A bead of sweat formed on Ro's face as he tried to discern Lelith's intentions, but was relieved when he saw that she empathized with the princess. His worry became confusion when Lelith spoke of her belief in a hero who would wield the Master Sword and stand against the forces of evil. His thoughts mirrored the princess', 'If such a hero existed where is he now, and why, then, was Ro, his band, and the others called upon instead?'
When Oten spoke his thoughts aloud, his face lightened up. 'I can volunteer to travel to Hylia and reestablish communications with them. At the same time, I could check on my family,' Ro thought to himself, 'But no... I must believe in their capabilities. After all, they are for more accomplished than I could ever hope to be. I must keep faith that they are doing everything they can in Hyrule. I know they would prefer me to be here, where my band and I are the only ones able to address the Zora's current problems. Have faith, Ro. Faith.'
Ro took a deep breath to compose his emotions, he readied himself to speak once again to the princess. But first, waited to see how she'd react to Lelith's words.
Rum still stands listening, his mind processing all he was hearing. A destined hero is possible, isn’t that the cycle after all. A great evil rises and then nations and heroes rise to confront it. But this is a specific hero, a destiny unfamiliar to him. And yet each one of them called to the Ivory Tower was in his mind a hero. Chosen from among many to be the few. For his part, he truly believes the Great Dragon has sent him on this journey.
Lelith’s sharp reaction doesn’t take him aback as it would have previously. He has seen her bearing shift like this before, it is her nature. A nature as changeable as the seasons it seems. He agrees with her final point though, they have to have belief. Belief in themselves, belief in the powers they hold faith with, like the Great Dragon for him, and belief that they will overcome, will survive.
Greko’s message only serves to highlight that what they need most right now is to believe in themselves. And Oten was right, they needed information.
His mind finally settles on what he thinks is best, and he starts to voice his opinion. “We cannot stay here”, he says loud enough for the others to hear, then continues a littler softer.
“I am sure we are all of the opinion that we want to help the Zora in their time of need. And that we should. But I do not think we can stay here”, he says with an expression of sympathy.
He looks at Commander Cyreus and across to Princess Ruto.
“To stay is to fight and the only enemy to fight are your brothers and sisters, your kin. You appear safe in here for now, and the only true way to resolve your situation is to remove the corruption from your fallen people”.
“This Ganondorf is treading a path of destruction across this land. Zora Domain has been hit, you have said the Kokiri have been hit. You believe Hyrule Castle might be a target too. I believe we need to follow that path, help where we can, possibly destroy these guardians as we have done here. Gather information as we go, about the corruption and also our own quest, about Blix and how the Lord of Darkness factors into all this. Try and figure out how to reverse the corruption and try to get to Ganondorf before”, he pauses for a moment. “Before it’s too late”.
“And we will need all the help we can get”, he acknowledges Oten at this point, then stands quiet and still waiting to see how the others, both the Zora and his own companions react to his perspective.
Greko nods in agreement "Perhaps your path, too, is in Hyrule, princess. By the sounds of it, your castle and domain have been taken....Perhaps regrouping and aiding Hyrule will better serve you in reclaiming your kingdom?"
Ruto listens, and seems put-off by Lelith's approach. She listens, and accepts what she has been told, but doesn't respond immediately to the Hylian's words. When she does, her words are cold but measured.
"We can't stand around and wait on a legend to save us." Ruto said. She looked sad even as she said it. She continued on by trying to give weight to Greko and Rum's words about aid. "The Zoras will stay here, and we'll continue to resist the corrupted. With the Guardian out of the way, we may be able to venture out now to...help them...I don't know. It is a long way overland for the Zoras to travel, and the way around may be as perilous."
"To stay and fight is the Zora way." Cyreus says to Rum. He offers up two empty hands as if to say 'what can you do?'. "The Domain has been our home for untold generations. We cannot abandon it now."
"Cyreus, if you would, find our guests some rations for the road, and perhaps some tokens of gratitude, if there's anything we can spare." Ruto said.
"As you say, your Highness." Commander Cyreus replies and steps away from the throne room.
Rum nods along as Princess Ruto and Commander Cyreus explain their position. He had no doubt they would want to stay in the Domain.
“I understand your decision to stay, just be mindful that these corrupted Zora are not willing foes. I have seen them up close, as I am sure you have, and they are victims as much as the rest of you. We will try and gather information that may help you return them to your fold, and we can deliver any messages you might have”, he says empathetically before Cyreus leaves, focussing more on the Commander with his desire to fight when speaking of the victims.
“Thank you for the offer of rations. Perhaps we would be allowed to rest for a short time before we head out as well?”, he looks to the rest of the party to see if that is something they needed. "What say you all, straight to Hyrule Castle, or should we go and lend our aid to the Kokiri first, and potentially gather more information along the way?".
Greko hears Rum's question and hears a bit of concern in his voice. Greko waddles up next to Rum and asks the Princess "Princess, what a struggle you face. You have been thrust upon the throne too soon with your parents leaving us and for that, I am deeply sorry. You show poise and grace but I feel your sadness. What is your plan to take back what is yours? What do you know of the surface? Do you have any idea how to help those corrupted by Gannon? Do you have a court scholar or wizard who would know such things? I am sorry for all the questions but you see if we are to help, we would need to know as much as we can. If there is nothing we can do here then perhaps we can find a solution as we travel."
The Princess listens and inhales like she's digging for patience. She levels a gaze at Rum and speaks gently.
"I know they're innocent. But if I let the innocent walk in here and destroy the Domain and kill everyone here...what good did I do preserving their lives?" She says with her eyes screwed closed. "We'll continue to look for a way to help the afflicted...but at some point, I have to carry out my royal duty to protect the Domain. I have a sick feeling, though I can't be sure, that whatever Ganondorf has done to them..****y he can undo."
Her attention passes to Greko when he addresses her.
"We hold here. Now that the Guardian is gone, we'll continue to research a way to break the curse and, if we can't...well. Commander Cyreus will simply have to do what he must. We do have a court wizard, but plans are hard to formulate without answers, I'm afraid."
It didn't take long for Cyreus to lead a small cadre of Zora back into the throne room with a couple of small crates. One had a little gold in it, not much, with some arrows, bandages and first aid basics, as well as a flint and steel and a couple of small knives. There wasn't much special about it. The other two crates had dried fish jerky, some fruits, and other assorted rations.
"Of course you're free to stay here today and rest, if you want. It will give the Corrupted time to return to the surf. Unless you prefer to depart immediately, we can escort you out at first light and see you on your way."
Oten once again breaks his silence as the supplies are carried out.
"Princess Ruto, I understand your decision to maintain your position here. Your duty is first to your people. However, as I informed you when I first arrived, my mission lies elsewhere. I thank you for your hospitality, but I believe it is time that I go forth. I have spoken with these people, and I shall be departing with them."
He stands tall as he speaks, and during the entire audience he has not bowed or bent, making no show of deference to the Princess.
"I know this may be sudden, but I believe I may be more efficacious by following this new course of action. And perhaps we will discover some solution to the Zora's corruption beyond these borders. That is all."
"Thank you Princess Ruto, our band accepts your gracious hospitality. Many of us have sustained wounds and could use a night's rest before we depart," Ro looks over his weary group then to Princess Ruto, "I understand that you must do what's necessary to protect your people. Our band will likely head to Hyrule in pursuit of Ganon. Should we learn of a way to cure your people, we will make sure that word gets to you with all haste."
Sensing the princess' patience wearing thin, Ro decided against further questioning and conversation. The elf-dwarf went to receive the goods that were supplied to the group, first seeing what the other bandmates wanted to hold onto then putting the rest into his bag of holding.
As Ro received the goods, he grabbed for Commander Cyreus' attention and spent a moment to share the group's tactics that allowed them to fell the guardian. He explained how keeping out of the guardian's line of sight prevented it from locking in on them and that illusion magic was an effective option. He also went into detail how Lelith managed to destroy the construct with a decisive blow to its 'eye', but warned that the construct self-destructed upon death and that it was best advised to take down the construct from a distance.
Afterwards, Ro called out to Oten, "You said you were on your way to answer the Childlike Empress correct? Perhaps fate delayed your arrival to help the Zora here, knowing that we'd come here to find you eventually. I have no doubt that your presence here has helped the Zora immensely. Our band would be honored to add you into our ranks." The elf-dwarf smiles and extends a hand to shake Oten's.
When the group had time to talk amongst themselves, Ro began discussion to plan the band's next move, "So what's the plan now? It seems that Blix has broken his allegiance with the Dark Lord, so he may not be heading here anymore. We still have two and half months before Captain Saewulf is picking us up at King's Landing, so we have time to help the people of Hylia before potentially chasing after Blix across the Summer Sea. The princess said that Ganon is headed to Hyrule Castle, so I believe that should be our ultimate destination. However, we are close enough to make stops at Kokiri Forest and The Great Deku Tree to survey the situation there if the group deems it worth the trip."
Rum simply smiles at the Princess warmly, knowing that she was doing her best and like him was possibly not the most experienced at what she was doing. Of course he hadn’t meant they should not defend themselves and simply allow the corrupted inside to kill them all. Merely to remain safe in the Domain and not rush to engage the corrupted. He had also intimated that the solution lay with Ganondorf as well. He decides against explaining this, they were on the same page after all and it would serve no purpose.
He listens as Oten announces his departure in his matter of fact manner, wondering how the not quite automaton will fit in with their group. And then stands by as Ro takes the lead talking to Cyreus and welcoming Oten into their group.
As discussions move on, he places his palm over his heart and once again bows from the waist to the Princess. He then turns to the others to give his own opinion of how they should move forward.
“I am ready to move on, but will be happy to wait until morning if there are those that would prefer to rest”, he starts by addressing the issue of when they should leave.
“I see three objectives, three paths. The first is the original quest, and for that we must find out where Blix calls home. For this it does seem we have some time on our side right now. Second, is to lend aid to the people of this area, much as we have done here at the Domain. For that I still believe following the trail of Ganondorf to the Kokiri would be best, even if we don't engage and just see the situation for ourselves. Lastly is our ultimate destination as you say, getting to Hyrule Castle. I expect the second path will lead to the third, and with luck we can find out about the first along the way”, he says with a grin, hoping everyone followed his train of thought.
Greko smiles at the princess "Indeed your majesty. It seems we are to stay the night, perhaps I may be some assistance to your wizard in looking for a cure or cause for your people's afflictions?"
After the princess answers Greko, he joins the group "Welcome to our band Oten. Help is needed and appreciated. I think resting is wise. We have a long journey ahead. Perhaps going to Hyrule castle to warn them of the incoming incursion would be wise instead of going to the Deku Tree? If Hyrule were to fall this continent would fall to darkness and I feel we would need to flee before our captain returns for us."
While Planning the Next Move Ro listens to Rum's and Greko's remarks then responds, "We can rule out surveying the Great Deku Tree if we wish to make way to Hyrule Castle with due haste. So is the plan to survey Kokiri Forest and then had straight for Hyrule Castle?"
After Planning is Complete and Before the Group splits up to Rest As the conversation comes to a close, Ro looks at each band member. The elf-dwarf's face grows a bit red before addressing the band. As he speaks, his speech is a bit stumbled and his face is a bit flustered, "Before we break off to rest, if I can ask for a bit of your time. W-well, you see. We've been travelling together for some time now. A-and though we've done much together to progress on our objective, there has been little time to enjoy each other's company as simple friends." Ro fumbles a bit as he reaches into his bag of holding and pulls out several small packages wrapped in cloth and twine, "I just wanted to say that I appreciate each of you. I see you more than just allies working towards a common objective; and that beyond the scope of our duties as heroes, I hope we can become close friends."
Ro hands a small package to Greko, Rum, Tuto and Lelith. The elf-dwarf turns to Oten and gives the warforged an apologetic smile, "Sorry Oten, I made these before I knew you'd be joining our band. It is not my intention to exclude you. That said, I hope that we could come to be close friends as well."
(From here, I'm going to write a little blurb specifically for each band member as they unwrap their gift. I've included pictures as a visual representation, if they aren't made of wood just pretend they are lol.)
Greko:
As Greko unwraps his gift, inside is a wooden sculpture of a kingfisher. It is posed as if it is perched on an invisible branch with its head held high and proud. Each of the bird's feathers had been meticulously carved out in fine detail. The wood has been left intentionally unfinished in the case that Greko would like to paint the sculpture. The entire sculpture stands no taller than about 3 inches tall. (The sculpture does not include the stand that is shown in the image.)
Rum:
As Rum unwraps his gift, inside is a wooden bangle. The band itself has been carved into the form of a serpent-like dragon about an 3/4 of an inch thick. The length of its body is covered in uniform scales while one end sports a dragon head and the other, a tail. The two ends wrap around Rum's arm when worn, but don't touch to create a complete ring; allowing the band's circumference to strink and stretch should Rum choose to where it on his wrist, ankle, upper arm or even tail. The bangle has been finished with a lacquer to give the wood a slight dark crimson look which further accents the dragon's scales and carved out details.
Tuto:
As Tuto unwraps his gift, inside is a small wooden whistle attached to a leather necklace. The whistle is about four inches long and has a cross-hatch pattern etched along the length of it. Just below the angled hole is a small painting of Tuto's mask. The whistle has been finished with a glossy lacquer that preserves the woods original color. When blown, the whistle emits a single, high note. It can be blown ridiculously loud.
Lelith:
As Lelith unwraps her gift, inside are three ornate arrows. While the arrowhead and fletching seemed to be standard fare, Ro had taken some artistic liberties with the shaft. The wooden shaft had been finished with a lacquer that give it a dark ebony hue. The shaft was also carved into to make swirling patterns that danced along the length of body. The etches were then filled with a gold inlay that shimmered in the sun. These arrows have the same properties as a weapon of warning, and require attunement to at least one arrow to reap its benefits. The arrows can still function as regular arrows. (Sorry I couldn't find an image of the arrow, but this is what the golden pattern looks like across the shaft).
Greko smiles at Ro and places his hand on Ro's shoulder "Thank you, young Ro. I appreciate this. Perhaps you have started a collection for me! I will have to collect more and display them around my hut...." Greko thinks a moment before saying "When we save the realm from impending darkness, you will come to my hut in the woods and enjoy some peace and quiet amongst the fey....and possibly learn from those in my order.... Ro the Red has a nice ring to it."

DM of AURYN: The Measure of Devotion - Escape from New York

While Planning the Next Move
Ro listens to Rum's and Greko's remarks then responds, "We can rule out surveying the Great Deku Tree if we wish to make way to Hyrule Castle with due haste. So is the plan to survey Kokiri Forest and then had straight for Hyrule Castle?"
After Planning is Complete and Before the Group splits up to Rest
As the conversation comes to a close, Ro looks at each band member.
