At the first attempt, the wet and moss covered stones of the ground make both Grom and Logan to slip and almost fall. After cleaning it a little bit and a few curses in the language of the desert nomads, they try again and this time, the hinges of the rusted metal porticullis give in and they manage to move it using the lock and the chain as an improvised and weird hinge. Dr. A. and Thandril goes in and they help them holding it while the both warriors turn around to put it back in place.
They are now at the entrance of the old dwarven mine. A straight dark corridor welcomes them. The air is moist and smells like fresh cut grass. The temperature seems to be colder inside. Logan and Dr. A. can't see more than twenty feet or so before the light of the day vanishes in the interior of the mine.
Thandril offers himself to go with Gorm ahead for he is comfortable in the dark too.
The two walk down the passage, a straight regular hole in the side of he hill that have a rusty railroad in the middle.
Dr A. and Logan follow behind, just far enough to barely see the figures of the the other two ahead of them.
The air gradually becomes colder and moister as they enter the passage. They can only hear their own steps and voices. Once they've walked around two hundred feet they realize that they should be descending, because they should have crossed to the other side of the hill by now, but the slope is so slightly and the craftmanship of the tunnel so fine that they hadn't notice it.
After a hundred feet more, and not really knowing how deep in the earth, they find a chasm. A hole that has been carved in the earth. There are wooden beams inserted in the rock around the circular hole, and the remmants of a chain can be seen in the center, where the five beams come together.
They look down but cannot see the bottom of the hole.
(The chain is broken? How sturdy do the beans seem? Could we trust them if we tied a rope and climbed down? Are there no other exits than the way we came and the home?)
“How is your supply of torches?” Gorm inquires. “We could light and drop one to see how deep this goes…”
( The chain is broken. The beams look in good condition and strong enough. No more visible exits. You can give me an investiagtion check if you want to make sure about those beams... )
Gorm Investigation: 6 - Their lack of woodworking skills is telling.
Gorm will take the offered torch and drop it down into the hole to try to get a sense of how deep it goes as well as what the walls are like. Is there a ladder built in to the hole or anything? Was the chain and (presumably) a bucket of some kind their only way of ascending or descending?
To Gorm's eyes, all that variety on wood, she is used just to the palm's wood, is weird and feels and looks the same. It seems solid enough though.
Dr. A. counts as the torch falls... one... the hole is lit as the torch descends, revealing a circular carving... two... there's some irregularities on the sides, probably where the dwarves found the silver and took it out... three... the light of the torch begins to be smaller... four... the light no longer reflects on the walls of the carved hole, it seems that it has reached a more open area... five. Finally the torch hits something, that is hard to discern, seems to be something made of metal by the sound it makes, and gets to rest in the ground. The dim light that reaches them up aboce reveals little. It seems that the torch has entered some kind of metallic container, probably a wagon.
Digging through his pack and producing a 50 foot length of hemp rope, Logan asks, “About how far down do you reckon that is, Doctor A? And how much chain is left up here that might be good enough to use?”

"I think that we only have a couple of feet of chain left up here "says Thandril "It looks like it was cut..."he says trying to get a better look at it while Dr. A. is making calculations in his head to properly answer Logan.
"Could tie my rope to yours if it is needed," Gorm says, "But it occurs to me we did not think to bring any mining tools. Picks or shovels. Has anyone seen any left behind by the previous workers?"
“Ahbut - let me see e=mc2. No wrong formula. Think you old fool! Terminal velocity of an African swallow should do it so V=Vo + gt.” He mutters to himself before looking up at the party and says “ahbut I think it’s 88 feet and 3 inches!”
(ooc: DM you’ll have to tell me the height as I’ve got no idea)

From the internets:
Q: A rock is dropped from a cliff and 5 seconds later it hits the ground. How high is the cliff?
A: Basic kinematics, negating drag and assuming ideal conditions, we use the equation:
d=vi*t+1/2*a*t^2
Since vi is 0 (we know this because you’re dropping it, not throwing it)…
…and the only acceleration acting on it is gravity, a=9.8 m/s^2…
…we get
d=1/2(9.8)(5)^2
Some quick mental math tells us that this is about 125 m.
Plugging it in, we find it to be 122.5 m.
If you think about it, this is close to 400’ and if you were to drop a rock from a building that tall it would probably take about that long to hit the ground. Count out five seconds and think about something falling that long. That’s a pretty long way to go considering it’s constantly accelerating.
(It’s about 350 feet 4,6 seconds of fall but 0.6 seconds is hard to measure by counting and describe ;). Anyway inspiration earned by that problem solving!. the meta gaming pigeon remembers you that Gorm didn’t make her investigation roll searching for steps… )
((Gorm definitely better at the meta-searches than the rolling…))
“Seems climbing to the bottom would be difficult,” Gorm offers. “And I wouldn’t think any silver would be right on the sides of the hole waiting for us. Ideas anyone?”

“I’m fine in the dark,” Gorm advises but looks questioningly to the others.
“We should expect if there is anything here that they heard us enter, the gate was not quiet. Still, we should be cautious…”
Gorm is ready to start heading into the tunnels once the group has decided on the light situation.
