Kyrsa slips through the door after Mina without making a sound, and closes it quietly behind her, but not before discovering the wall carving that must be pressed "just so" to re-open the door from this side. As she listens at the door, she does not hear any evidence that it is being opened from the inside. When the door is closed, it just appears as an ordinary wall, there are no seams or gaps around it. If you didn't know it was there, you'd have no clue.
Mina nods to Kyrsa as she slinks right through the door after her, after taking stock of their situation, she whispers, "We have two guards at the staircase and we need to make it to an office to find what Nyblond is looking for - I just don't know what office or how to get out from behind this fireplace without them noticing us."
As the two elven women peek out from their hidden alcove, they hear a door open from their left, and someone shuffling northward across the room to the double doors on their right.
One of the guards at the stairs calls out, "All done for the night, Shylock?" The voice that responds has a definite goblin accent to it. "Yesss. All done. All the moneys is collected and locked up. I go to Chief now. Nighty-night. "
A short hooded figure then walks through your field of view, opens one of the double doors, and exits the room.
(Sorry for taking so long; I've really been thinking hard about what to do. Tamryn is a great improviser, but sometimes I am not).
Tamryn quickly goes to the door and closes it softly. Turning to the clerk, he glances around the room to see if there is any sign of an alarm system or some way to alert the guards as to what is happening in the room (bonus action: Eye for Detail: Investigation: 20).
To the clerk he says, "My good man, we've no intention of killing you...as long as you cooperate. Nor are we here for money." He signals to Lyndaryn to hand over the money (if he still has it; I've lost track). "I do have a couple of requests though. Trifling things. First, please do put your hands on the desk, as my colleague so correctly requested. Second, where do you normally go after you finish your daily collections?" (Persuasion: nat 1 (second roll is a 24 on the off chance that circumstances somehow give me advantage))
The clerk obligingly lowers his hands and places them on the desk in front of him. He answers, "Well, after the final deposit, the guard and I, which happens to be Rita tonight," he glances once more at the enthralled tiefling, "Rita and I would leave the room together, lock the door, and she would stand guard outside it while I go and deliver the ledger and my report to my superior. As you must know, his office is on the north side. From there, he will either dismiss me for the day, or he will ask that I come back to observe him as he comes here to compare my ledger to the contents of the chest. If he is satisfied at that point, he will dismiss me. If he is unsatisfied, he will separate my head from my shoulders. Thus, I am quite meticulous in accounting for every copper delivered to me.
"If I may be permitted... You have come in to see me every night for... is it three years now? You have never shown any inkling of insanity before. You say you are not here for money. You say you are here for a 'job'. You don't seem to realize that what you're really doing is committing suicide in what will turn out to be the most painful way possible. Do any of you have a next of kin you'd like me to notify when this is done?"
Kyrsa whispers, "Well, we know the safe is in the main office, so we just need to figure out where that is..." She pauses a moment, trying to formulate a plan. "If we can guess which room is the one we want, then you could use the scroll of disguise self to appear as that goblin we just saw. ...or someone else if we can get a glimpse of them." She pauses again, scanning the area. "Either way, if you have a disguise that would allow you to enter the office without raising alarm, then I could probably teleport in as you open the door. ...if I can get close enough." She pauses again, scanning the room. It would be a little risky to try using the disguise self scroll when the real person could potentially exit the room, but as long as it can get them into the office, it might not matter.
(Is there any indication of which room is this 'main office'?)
"Excellent," says Tamryn, "And your supervisor then takes a report to the boss upstairs, yes? Could you remind me of their name? Also would you mind adding our haul to the ledger?"
Akyan remains in the same position as Tamryn speaks. He thinks that he can tell where this is going and while he's not sure he likes the plan, but he can't really think of a better one. "We really should bind them." He mutters. He's not sure how long Jhaartael's spell lasts, and he doesn't trust that the clerk won't try anything.
(Is there any indication of which room is this 'main office'?)
Well, you saw someone who is apparently a money-collector say he was going to see the "Chief" and he went through the double doors to the North.
Oh, (duh :'D) I thought it would be the double doors, I just wasn't sure lol.
"Scratch that plan," Kyrsa says quickly. "It looks like we've got at least two people inside the main office. So, either we'll need to wait until that goblin comes back out, or we are just going to have to risk sneaking in." She glances in the direction of the guards at the staircase, "The guards are our biggest problem."
"Excellent," says Tamryn, "And your supervisor then takes a report to the boss upstairs, yes? Could you remind me of their name? Also would you mind adding our haul to the ledger?"
"I am not privy to the process after I report to my supervisor. But presumably there is some accountability on his part as well. Eventually, it would be reported to Lady Viper. Of course, The Seven are not always here at this time of night, so he may not necessarily report in tonight, but I really don't know for sure. I do know that every day when I come back, the chest is empty, so he must take all the coins somewhere, but I really don't know.
"If you will hand me the bag so that I may count it, and then allow me to put the money into the chest myself, then I will sign the ledger attesting to the deposit. But I won't sign it falsely. Frankly, if I'm to die, I'd rather you do it than just wait around for the boss to hunt me down and have me flayed alive."
"Yeah, they are definitely a problem. I'm not really good at making plans, but as I see it, we can either wait for the goblin to come back out and leave, but if I come out of here as the goblin, the guards will surely be suspicious. Random thought, I could disguise myself as close to Thamior as I have heard about him and say I found this staircase and got turned around and all, keep the guards busy on me and you go find out what's beyond those doors? Probably wait till the goblin leaves either way. Kind of crazy plan, but I don't have anything else." Mina looks to Kyrsa, a bit worried about their current situation.
As you continue to observe the guards, suddenly loud alarm bells begin ringing. About eight guards come racing down the stairs from the fourth floor, and wave the guards on this floor to join them, and they all run down to the second floor together, brandishing their weapons. Shortly after that, the double doors open, and a large, very fat human male waddles out, followed by Shylock. He looks concerned. To the goblin he says, "We must secure the day's earnings," and both of them together proceed to the southeast corner office, pass through the door, and you hear the lock click. For the moment, the third floor common room is deserted except for the two of you.
Second floor peeps:
As the clerk finishes his explanation, you hear loud alarm bells sounding outside the door to this office, and the sounds of many feet rushing about. A triple knock on the door is followed by the outside dwarf's voice: "Stay inside! There's some sort of attack going on downstairs. We're all going down to help!" The exterior sounds gradually die down to silence.
Mina stares at this new development with her eyes open wide. She then asks Akyan, There are several guards heading your way, please tell me it has nothing to do with you! If not we will continue on our mission, if so, we'll be right there. Tell me!!
Akyan lets his blade vanish, trusting that Lyndaran or Tamryn will stop the clerk if he tries anything, and quickly moves to tie and gag the guard along with removing her weapons. Whatever is going on seems rather convenient, but he figures it’s probably best not to think about it to hard.
When he hears Mina’s voice he responds, “No, I have no clue what’s going on but it’s not us. Whatever is happening, it’s providing a perfect distraction.”
Second Floor combat:
Round 2
Lyndaran -21- Continues to be ready to attack to be triggered if any unexpected violence or intrusion occurs
Guard- 20- the tiefling female continues to gaze at Jhaartael, seemingly unaware of anything or anyone else.
Akyan - 17- expresses his desire to engage in bondage. (May still act and move if desired).
Jhaartael - 16- pending, but presumably continues to distract Rita.
Clerk- 16- Remarks on your suicidal behavior.
Tamryn -8- issues further instructions to the clerk. (May still act and move if desired).
