It is fading to dusk but there is still a fair amount of light. As you cross the first island on your way back to town Graarl notices that there is a water craft (in shadow and too dark to tell exactly what) hitched to some bushes on your right that was not there before. Nerithana sees something move off to your right at about the same time.
Nerithana and Graarl are not surprised but everyone else is. I need Nerithana and Graarl to roll [Tooltip Not Found] in a spoiler. Everyone else will roll initiative but you will not be able to act on the first turn.

Nerithana and Graarl are able to quickly defend themselves as they see Goblins close in from the right. There are three, two normal sized goblins and one that seems a bit larger and in charge.

Nerithana is not surprised by the goblins but her attempt at a fire bolt misses so badly that Graarl feels the hair on his arm singe as he runs the gobin through with his sword. The goblin sits lifeless on the end of Graarls sword as the other two Goblins attack Merry with a little added ferocity from the fear of meeting Graarl's rage!
Big Goblin attack1 Attack: 20 Damage: 6
Big Goblin attach2 (disadvantage): Attack: 5 Damage: 6
Goblin 2 attack: Attack: 11 Damage: 4
Actually Merry would have fallen unconscious with the second swing from the Big Goblin and the second Goblin would have attacked Simon instead. Take note of damage and Merry is unconscious (you will roll a death save in the next round of combat.)
Seeing their companion fall quickly, fear motivates them to action and the Big Goblin takes down Merry with two swings of his scimitar. The remaining Goblin changes his attention to Simon and pierces his armor with a powerful strike taking him out of action as well. The battle is hard going and looks to bring the company to it's knees unless they turn the Goblin fear back on the Goblins.
So the order is now:
Nerithana
Graarl (the goblin you attacked is now dead of course)
Simon sticks to the middle of the group, since he's aware of his squishiness.
