(Oh yes, the portal is very much open. However, it's a length of rope that each person is trying to climb at the same time, so it would take longer than a single round for everyone to climb up. I didn't realize it until halfway through posts about climbing up, so I figured the lizardmen started converging on your position partway through every climbing in.
Also, I may as well throw it out since we have 3 passive perceptions in the 20s: ripples in the water ;) )

As Elon bolts into the mist and up a tree, the lizardfolk converge on the site of the new intruders. From the water, a crocodile emerges and stands up on two legs. It's form shifts until it resembles an ornately tatooed lizardman. A few other similarly-marked lizardmen come forward along with a larger one bearing a massive spear and piecemeal armor. Around them, a dozen of their kind stand ready. The large one grabs the hanging rope and begins pulling on it, "Intruders to Land of Szazzul, you come down! Nowhere to run; we wait, you come down or starve."

Everyone inside Solomon's pocket dimension make a DEX save against Taliesin's fireball as spells and attacks cannot cross the border (in or out) of the Rope Trick.

As you peek out, a flurry of attacks fly at you, trying to pull you from your hiding place.
Thorn Whip Thorn Whip from 3 of the shaman: 8, 19, 9. 5, 4, 5 damage, respectively.
The first whip is thrown clumsily, allowing you to grab ahold of it instead. As you relish the moment, another whip lashes to your arm, the barbs sticking into the surface of your skin. The lizard man gives a yank and pulls you down through the opening as you shout the fiery incantation.
A bead of light sails from your hand as you fall, landing behind the lizardmen congregation, but close enough to catch a few in the blast.

Five of the lizardmen ignite in a fiery conflagration. One manages to rise, but the others are not so fortunate. The chief lizardman holds his spear against your chest to keep you on the ground, his shaman summon small flames in their hands as further warning.
"I say again," the big one calls up, "You come out now. We kill this one, strip bones and eat flesh here if not."

Typed "roll" for the Thorn Whip tooltip above and now I can't get it back. Regardless, the numbers are different, but the results are the same.
There are now 8 (1 crispied) lizardmen standing in a close circle below. Inside are the 4 shaman and the leader. Furthest 2 I'd say are about 20' apart.

OOC: Two things, that’s “Large or smaller” not “Large or small,” that means medium too. Secondly, it pulls the creature you hit. Unfortunately, unless DM says so, it’s not a grappling hook.
