Oh goodness! I forgot to mention a few things about my dming. Aside from the obvious differences in my DMing style that you all have noticed already, I have a couple of homebrew rules I’d like to put into effect. You may discuss and ask questions regarding them with me as to whether or not you think they’re fair, and I’ll accept some haggling, but I think you’ll find they add to the dynamics rather than take away.
During the day, players may only take short rests. A long rest may only be taken by way of a sleep cycle. A short rest may only be taken by eating rations. Should the party become nocturnal by choice and sleep during the day, these times are reversed but the rules stay the same.
The rules regarding magic item attunement are null and void. If I give you a magic item, that item is yours and your character can use it, given they are proficient.

Sounds good to me in general.
Should we assume a certain number of starting rations that make sense for our characters? Is there any special limit on number of Hit Die used to recover HP during a short rest?

Works for me. I do have one minor question. I was planning on using my goodberry spell to avoid too much hassle with rations. How would that interact with short rests?

I’d like everyone to start with three. We can track them on the character page. I’ll double check for this when the campaign starts.
I like to do a short rest to refill half your max hp. I Ah… actually don’t know the official DnD rule on that 😅😅😅

I would advise using rations at checkpoints and saving your good berries as a proper healing spell in combat or the field in general, as you can’t take a short rest in combat and sitting down to have lunch in a dungeon doesn’t always make sense story wise (I.e. you could be attacked) if you did spend the spell slot at a pause in the action I’d allow the ten berries to count as 3 full rations. To be distributed however you’d please amongst the party. Does that make sense?

That’s how I feel about it too. And it’s perfect for BOTWs survival style theme to boot.

feel free to educate me here.
So generally a short rest lasts an hour and you roll hit die to recover HP equal to the roll+con. The number and size of the hit die depends on class and level. For example a level 5 range would have 5 d10, level 5 wizard 5d6, barabarian 5d12.
you can use any number of hit die on a short rest but once you are out of hit die you don’t get more until you finish a long rest.
Also most character backgrounds give you a bag of miscellaneous items and most if not all give you 10 rations.
We have two players who have yet to put forth characters. If neither of them communicate by the end of the night I’ll shoot them some PMs. Stef has only joined us a day ago, so give them the same patience I’ve given you please. This is my only Campaign I’m a part of, dm or otherwise, so I assure you I am focused entirely on it. It won’t die on my watch.

Goodberry isn’t particularly for its healing but more for its unique ability sustain a person for a full day: “Eating a berry restores 1 hit point, and the berry provides enough nourishment to sustain a creature for one day.”
its kind of like the elvish bread from Lord of the rings that way

Sure thing, I like your system also but the DnD 5e rule is the concept of Hit Die which is a pool of die (determined by character level and class) that can be rolled during a short rest to recover HP.
I will always keep everyone updated, and I won’t go more than 48 hours without stopping in for communication to some extent. That said, I hold my other players to the same standard. Those who don’t communicate will be left behind if they ghost us, and the start date will be as soon as possible. While we have people eager to join, however, I feel it necessary to show their efforts respect. We haven’t started yet, so why start without them?
if it’s creative energy you have waiting to get out, your more than welcome to brainstorm with the group.
im wondering how to show progress in an original way in the story that parallels Link’s growth in the game without stepping on his character. He specifically gets hearts and heart containers from spirit orbs because he’s the Hero. So assuming your characters are getting their HP/spells/abilities from their own might and training, I’m wondering what else we can throw in from Zelda Lore that could relate to each of your characters specifically.
Hylians have that natural affinity to magic in Hyrule like I eluded to with your racial bonus spell. I’m wondering if more gifts bestowed, perhaps from the fairies like in Ocorina of Time, would be fitting? @purplepotatopower
For the Kakariko descendant it’s somewhat straightforward. *cough cough* yiga clan training *cough cough* but how exactly would you like that to manifest specifically @Dndlover_2
For a Rito… Ah… a bit tougher, eh? Their magical song culture is something to go off of, but Garvii doesn’t seem so connected to that. There’s the Horse God, a weird out of left field element I loved from BOTW. Perhaps there is a Bird God as well? Maybe… what do you think @WB

So when it comes to growing in power similar to gears or stamina there is an already similar form of leveling in D&D. You can either level up via experience by killing monsters or by milestone. Milestone allows the DM to determine when the party levels up. Most DMs use the milestone method to award the players with their level ups when they accomplish a certain task or achievement or when they kill a particularly powerful opponent.
Link in botw essentially uses the milestone method. Every time he found a shrine or defeated a divine beast he got a bit stronger. From what you commented the campaign will revolve around setting up the stables. So maybe every time we successfully set up a stable or defeat a problematic boss monster?

@GregorWeis There is a sky spirit figure that the Rito in The Wind Waker worship called Valoo that is a dragon. Link: https://zelda.fandom.com/wiki/Valoo. There is some potential to work with that system. I'll think about it some more though. I'm not sold on that concept.

So I’m more talking about how link gets more powerful due to a specific lore reason. He gets spirit orbs from monks and prays to the goddess to exchange them. I want to involve the greater spirits of Zelda lore in the process of your characters getting stronger. Based on what we settle on, I want to give you all unique powers.
Don’t read too far into anything I’ve written lore wise JUST yet. That is a minor part of the greater campaign. Just something to tug you along for now.

I would recommend the Great Fairies as a lore mechanic for that then. Regular people have often heard of them and they are necessarily accessible only by a hero whereas shrines and divine beasts would be accessible only for the hero.

A dragon is a strong choice as well
I would recommend the Great Fairies as a lore mechanic for that then. Regular people have often heard of them and they are necessarily accessible only by a hero whereas shrines and divine beasts would be accessible only for the hero.
