As the rest arrive at the top Argyle and Thatch note a path leads uphill and eastwards . Another, more of an animal run than a path, leads around the hill to the north. Or they could try pushing through the thick forest.
Having caught his breath, Hotspur says, "If they were waiting for us at the top of the cliff, there is probably also an ambush waiting for us in those woods along the clearly marked path. I would advise taking the path less traveled, or else sneaking up on the ambushers through the woods."
"I don't know. I'm no sneak thief, but I'd also like to think I'm no fool to rush into an ambush. But time is of the essence." Valor sighs, "Unless someone feels strongly, the other way, let's take the smaller path.

"The smaller path is just fine by me," said Argyle, not-so-secretly itching to encounter the cretins who tried to harm his companion. He fell in step behind Valor, keeping a vigilant eye open as he walked. (( Perception Check:13, just in case it happens to crop up in the next scene or two... ))
Thatch helps the others to the top, then shakes his head to Tana’s question “I did not see ‘em, but heard them run off through the brush” As they discuss what path to take, Thatch looks around to see if there are any tracks from the man they are following “Can we tell what direction Sir Olvar went? If it is him we are following.” He then looks up in surprise “Do you think those that were trying to stop us have him?”Perception: 12.
"Tread carefully everyone. We have no way of knowing what lies in the undergrowth." Tana noted, quickly glancing around to see if she can spot any signs of disturbance or any more recent-looking tracks in the ground.

Tanas time in the woods serves them well as her keen eyes pick out broken bracken, bootprints and other signs of passage though the small path they now follow appears to have been untrodden by humans for quite some time. Just as they depart she marks a trail of somewhat rain-destroyed but deeper bootprints heading up the broader path....
Following the small trail a short way around the hill short solid shapes begin to appear through the trees at first you take them for tree-stumps but soon you realise they are piles of rubble, half hidden by leaf-mould, or crumbling beneath the root systems of trees. The path dwindles to nothing in the midst of these ruins. You fancy this was once a village several hundred years past. There are a number of animal trails winding through the fallen stones and one structure appears to have a somewhat intact roof giving a little shelter from the rain.
Suddenly from somewhere further up the hill several screams ring out, mens voices raised in terror....
"It doesn't seem like much has happened here since its destruction," Tana notes quietly as the group makes their way through the ruins.
Upon hearing the screams, Tana immediately reaches for the quarterstaff on her back. The beginnings of a spell flicker through her fingers and she creeps further up the hill toward the sound. She glances back at the party before inching her gaze over the natural formation, looking around once more to try and determine the exact source of the commotion.

The sound seems to be coming from a fair way up the hill, she determines it would likely be 10 mins or so of forcing your way through the woods or 5 minutes or so along the broader path back the way you came. On the edge of her hearing she can hear the sounds of branches breaking and noisy wet footsteps of two individuals descending rapidly off to the east and west.
Argyle immediately drew his blades at the sounds of the screams, but had been caught off guard. He then saw Tana move, and quickly followed to provide assistance.
(( Argyle will come up near to Tana so that she sees him, but will try to be quiet enough to not draw attention from... whatever that was. Stealth Check: 8 ))

Tana inclines her head at Argyle as he approaches before moving back toward the rest of the group, quietly relaying all the information she had been able to gather.
"We could go through the woods toward the sound, which might take us around 10 minutes, or we could try the worn path for a faster approach." She tucks the quarterstaff back into the cloth sash along her back as she speaks. "Two people appear to be fleeing or heading off somewhere in the trees. One is moving east, the other west. I'm not sure if there is anyone else present. If we decide to take the broader path, it's best we try to stay as inconspicuous as possible."
"Hang on just a pop, no sense charging blindly into the night, like as not we'll end up the same as those blokes," says Hotspur. "We came all this way, I want to see what's in that hut before I leave." With that, he crosses to the intact structure. Does any light come from within?

( No light. It barely qualifies as a structure really...more a remnant that had a slightly more sturdy construction than some others, a brief look around inside reveals a scattering of broken pottery, a lot of spider webs and large numbers of swallow nests and accompanying guano.
His foot does however discover a rather tarnished bronze hairpin under a fallen piece of slate...but nothing else. )
"Hmm,"mutters the bard, pulling the pin out of his boot and sticking it in a beltpouch. "All right, guess that was not much help. Off we go then, to save the screamers. Or slaughter them, depending."
Argyle came back, blades sheathed, and listened as the options were brought up. He turned to Valor. "You did say you wanted to prioritize speed, yes? Then it sounds like that broader worn path is the better option."
Valor nods at Argyle, preparing his sword and shield, "Looks like our decision is made. On towards the path. Hopefully, it's not a trap, but if there's someone who needs help, they'll have my shield."
