Avaria breathes a sigh of relief when the Mayor surprisingly takes a reasonable turn on things. She looks to her friends to make sure she wasn't missing something, that this was all a joke and that the doors behind them would suddenly be locked and she'd never see the outside again..
She realizes anxiety is creeping in and starting to paralyze her a bit, this was new. Her eyes had grown wide and a bit wild as the anxiety had taken hold, but she starts breathing normal again and watches Ethel escort Gertrude and Dodds out the door.
When she finally realizes the Mayor is asking her a direct question, it takes her a second to reel in her thoughts and notice what Jan had started on their story. Assuming the death of Gary didn't need to become widely known, she nods, "I did chase after the man that looked like Hammerdasher, so glad our dwarf friend is alright. I chased him out the window and down an alleyway, a couple actually, but he had a head start and threw his poisoned weapon in a barrel throwing off my scent, so I went for the weapon instead of the wielder." Her shoulders slump at that last part, she knows it will be a long time before she stops thinking about that mistake.
"Sorry, I meant a dwarf like Hammerdasher."Avaria says belatedly after noticing Jan. She's about to say more on how she found them outside of her room, but decides against it and nods, "Yes, they didn't say anything. Trust me, if I would have caught him... it would be a different story."
Mayor Klein looks at all of you for several moments, saving his longest look for Avaria.
Eventually he breaks into a smile.
"Well, all's well that ends well," Mayor Klein says. "I hope you continue to enjoy what Spandelyion has to offer. Please convince them to stay. We can use more like this lot."
He directs the last bit towards Ula.
Klein is already turning back towards the Council Hall when he starts talking again.
"Captain Mard will keep a protective watch over you until we catch this lovelorn burglar. Now, please excuse me, I've a mountain of work to get through."
He steps through the doors back into the Council Hall.
Mard watches him leave then turns back to the group.
"We'll post guards outside the Broken Ore tonight and a we'll round up a couple to follow you during the day."
"Thank you Lord Mayor, and I am truly sorry about the incident Adelysia caused. She somehow manages to make the orcs we were imprisoned with seem pleasant by comparison."
Once the mayor has departed Marrin will ask Mard,
"Do you have any leads? He very nearly killed our friend."
After the mayor leaves, Avaria looks to the others, a bit confused. "Why all the secrecy? I mean, yes... he doesn't need to know the end of the situation, but I don't get it? I was so glad he saw reason so quickly."
She pauses then looks out the door that Ethel, Gerturde and Dodds exited, "I hope when Ethel returns, she reports good news, I've had enough bad to last quite awhile."
(Going to go with that as Deception instead of Performance and Mard isn't going to be that roll with his Insight)
As everyone collectively holds their breath when Avaria mentions a secret they didn't share with the mayor and some of the others cast a sideways glance at Mard to see if he caught on, Marrin immediately jumps into action and genuinely appears to think Avaria is drunk.
Mard looks at Avaria for a second then raises and eyebrow and laughs.
"You have to be careful of that pine whiskey they push there," Mard says. "Knocked me on my ass the first time I tried it."
Meanwhile, Ethel is lead on a brisk tour of town. The two guards move along quickly with Dodds and Gertrude, retracing your steps past the athletic field and along side the outer wall of the High Gardens. As you get to the north end of the gardens, Ethel spots the brass band making their way out, instruments now in protective cases.
Once past the gardens, her quarry veer north-northeast along a main road, walking along for several minutes before getting to the edge of the town proper.
The guards stop, hand two packs to Harry and Gertie and gesture for the pair to keep moving. Harry looks into the packs for a moment then slips his on and helps Gertie with hers.
He spots Ethel back up the road and waves a good-bye.
One guard raises his voice and tells them to get going.
Hand in hand, they make their way off along the road, heading towards some farms in the distance.
"Jan was in bad shape when we got back. Would have been tossing some sugered mushrooms in the courtyard here I'd wager if the Stonecast's hadn't given her a clean up potion."
She'll lean in while she's settling Ava and whisper,
"We'll talk about everything later, back at the inn."
She'll straighten and say at a normal volume,
"I don't think Ethel will be coming back here, but we can probably meet her at the inn. Let me know when you're ready, okay? We can take breaks as we go."
"Ahem. Yes, it was potent. I dare say that the Stonecasts would take it poorly if we took off too soon after a rare break in, but we're looking to outfit a crew and take on supplies. Don't think we'd discussed a set number of days, more than a couple, less than a week I'd wager?"

Ethel returns a reserved, but friendly wave and watches them depart. Convinced there will be no more drama with those two - at least none that will impact her and her allies - she returns to the Broken Ore at a leisurely pace, thinking about what comes next.
[Assuming no more excitement on the walk back...]
Once the party is together again at the Ore, Ethel cuts right to business. "How much did the Mayor 'reward' us? Has anyone counted the coin yet?

Jan chews her lip a bit as Ava shares more than she would have chosen to... She's still not certain of the mayor.

Mayor Klein listens carefully to Avaria's description of what happened, never taking his eyes off of hers.
He then looks to each of them and briefly to Mard.
"A shapeshifter?" The mayor says. "And a poisoned weapon? Perhaps not a burglar then. And they said nothing? You're sure of this?"
"Sorry, I meant a dwarf like Hammerdasher." Avaria says belatedly after noticing Jan. She's about to say more on how she found them outside of her room, but decides against it and nods, "Yes, they didn't say anything. Trust me, if I would have caught him... it would be a different story."

Marrin raises her eyebrows,
"Well I was late for all of it, but I am excited to hear more about this dwarven love triangle!"

Once the mayor has departed Marrin will ask Mard,
"Do you have any leads? He very nearly killed our friend."
Mard doesn't say anything for a few moments. He just watches the Mayor leave. Finally he turns to Marrin.
"I don't suspect we'll ever find this love triangle dwarf," Mard says. He then looks over at Jan. "Will we?"
He takes a breath.
"Are you staying in town long?"
Marrin blinks at Ava,
"Ava? Are you a late reacting drunk? I know you put away a half dozen drinks at the Lintoll before coming here but you seemed steady until just now."
She looks questioningly over to Jan and Ula,
"What secrecy do you mean? With who? The Lord Mayor? I think you may need to sit down."

Mard escorts the group across the parade ground to the palisade gates.
"I'll have someone watching the inn and don't be surprised if you see a guard following you around town as well," Mard says.
With that he leaves you on your own.
It's getting on to late afternoon now.
Jan takes a look in the purse to see what Tammer and Slick netted them.
