Zefla, something Sorensaid definitely set them off, though you're not sure what exactly.
They went from seemingly... well, if not helpful, at least willing to talk, to demanding you leave immediately. They have closed ranks and hands are lingering near their swords now. If anything, they look scared about something, rather than angry.

Giles looks over at Zefla, Burr and Soren, saying “I think we need to move along, just as they say. Apparently nothing to see here….” Giles turns and winks at Soren with a knowing look. He turns back to the guards, saying “All will be well. Have a good day.” He turns and starts to walk, moving out of earshot, before pulling everyone aside into a mini huddle.
“They know. They know where Ireena is. I saw them tighten up when you gave her description. She’s alive, I know it. If I could get one of them alone, perhaps have one of you distract them, I could call on Lady Tymora to charm them into telling us where she is. I have a feeling that they know…”. Giles stops, listening for opinions.

A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.
Soren allows himself to be pulled away from the guards, puzzled at their change in demeanor. City folk are so strange... and I thought the baroness was Lady Wachter but... it was Baron Vallakovich's wife... and in fact Vallakovich and Wachter seem to be rivals. How many kinds of noble are there anyway? (Soren is still wrapping his head around the idea that nobles and lords can have different titles and that "Baron" does not mean the same thing as "Noble")
When Giles explains his deduction that the guards know where Ireena is, the druid cannot help exclaiming, "THEY DO?" and then much more quietly, "ah... sorry, they do? I wonder why they seem so afraid. Perhaps... perhaps because admitting Ireena was there during the attack and then taken calls into question their pack leader's false bravado of having caught the culprit (Lady Bauer). Because if Lady Bauer is the culprit, and now captured, then why have they not found Ireena? The Baron seems not to want anyone to sow doubt about his having caught the evildoer(s)."
When Giles asks for a distraction so he can get one guard alone, Soren thinks for a moment. "I do not know, not-Father. I can transform into an animal to provide a distraction, or do so with my Bear totem spirit Bramble. Or use a new power I feel Silvanus' has granted me, the ability to mold earth, moving and digging loose soil. None of these seem likely to cause a guard to isolate themselves for your questioning, however."
" I mean I could just go and punch the other guard.....pains pretty distracting....plus I'd get thrown in jail and might be able to chat to our tiefling friend. Though I guess they could just execute me...which would be less useful.", Burr mused.
"Well, it doesn't look like these guards are moving anytime soon, let's visit the Watchers and see what they have to say. If it is a dead end we can come back and shake these fellas up." Zefla offers. Turning to Burr, "Though it would be entertaining to watch you just head up and punch the guy."
Giles’ shoulders droop slightly, he doesn’t hear any good options to proceed with the guards. “Okay, let’s head over to Wachter’s house and see what we can find out. I am not convinced that Ireena is dead, I think there is hope, so I will come back to this, perhaps when we have a better opportunity… Ready? Anywhere else on the way?” Giles turns to walk to the Wachter house unless there are other thoughts.

A wizard is never late, nor is he early, he arrives precisely when he means to.
Soren follows along with the others on the way to Lady Wachter's home.
On the way, he keeps an eye out for a weapon-smith or fletcher from whom he can buy a fresh quiver of arrows. He responds to Burr:
"She may well know something useful. What worries me is that she, Lady Wachter, seems to be a rival to the Baron Vallakovich to be the alpha pack-leader of Vallaki, judging from their hostile exchange in the square. As newcomers we may be stepping into a conflict that is not our own. On the other hand, we did return her two sons who had drunk too much and lost to Zefla at dice. Though I was a draft horse at the time and do not recall much."
He considers further. "Perhaps we can ask her about her book club for which we found an invitation."
(Soren tries to sound as if he knows what a book club is).
The party make their way back toward the north side of town, where the home of Lady Fiona Wachter awaits. Approaching in the grey light of day, the old manor looks less dilapidated and forlorn than you remember, though the iron fence is still rusted, save for the ironworks spelling out the name Wachterhaus.
A knock on the front door summons the same servant who took Karl and Nikolai off your hands... gods, what was it? Just three nights past? This time, rather than night clothes, the servant is dressed in formal wear. She seems to have been expecting you. "Welcome to Wachterhaus. Lady Fiona has been expecting you. Please, wipe your feet outside and then follow me."
Stepping through the doorway, you find yourselves in the same narrow vestibule where you left the Lady's sons. Three stained-glass doors in wooden frames lead from it. The stained glass of all three doors show motifs of long-legged water birds. Two of the doors, facing the front of the house and flanking the front door, lead to closets. The only other door leads to a narrow hallway and a long, tall staircase. She leads you through this door, and then turns left.
Passing through another doorway, she leads you into a grand dining room. An ornate dining table stretches the length of this room, a crystal chandelier hanging above it imperiously. The silverware shows care, but is aged and many of the dishes chipped, yet all are still quite elegant. Eight chairs, their backs adorned with sculpted birds, surround the table. Arched windows made of a latticework of iron and glass look out onto the small, fog-swept estate. An empty serving tray sits on the middle of the table.
She leads you deeper into this large room, where a parlor adjoins it. Here three elegant couches surround an oval table made of black glass. All are set in front of a blazing hearth, above which hangs the portrait of a smirking nobleman sporting a broken nose and a tangle of hair graying at the temples. Several smaller portraits hang on the north wall. Of the man in the main portrait, you immediately spot an unmistakable resemblance to Karl and Nikolai.
The servant stops, bows and then steps aside. "Please, be greeted by the mistress of Wachterhaus, Lady Fiona Wachter."
Seated on one of the sofas, cane resting across her lap, is the woman you spied earlier in the plaza, engaged in wordplay with the Baron. She is thin, with a formal woman's doublet buttoned all the way up to her throat. She smiles warmly at the four of you. "Welcome, visitors from beyond. I've heard so much about you, and I felt it was about time we had a proper introduction. Please, sit. Dinner will be ready momentarily. In the meantime, I would love to hear more about who you are, and where you come from."
"Welcome, welcome to my home. Make yourselves comfortable."
She looks to the servant. "Vilka. The kitchens, please. See that dinner is brought out at once. My guests must be famished after their travels. They've walked halfway across the valley." The servant bows and departs.

Soren is at an utter loss on how to react to the trappings of aristocracy which adorn the interior of the Wachter home. The long-legged water bird motif seeming natural, yet nothing like real nature. Murmuring for Silvanus'guidance, he hopes against hope that Lady Wachter may be an ally, yet...
He has to force himself to stifle an audible grunt of worry when he enters the dining room and looks out the window. The fog. Is it thicker on the grounds here than elsewhere in Vallaki? Soren glances briefly at his companions to see whether they have noticed the same thing.
The fog which was held at bay from entering the grounds of Saint Andral's Cathedral while the Bones still protected it from monsters. The fog which seemed to chase us from Yester Hill back to the Wizard of Wines after we destroyed the Gulthias Tree. The fog which surrounds Barovia, and if Davian Martikov and Ireena's brother Ismark are to be believed, is gradually swallowing cities to the west. The fog which encroached into our own home lands near Daggerford and transported us unwillingly through as the werewolves attacked, bringing us in with a purpose, as Davian told us. Strahd's fog.
If the others do not respond, Soren once again makes an odd bow, like an animal stretching. Trying to speak carefully.
"Thank you for welcoming us, Lady Wachter. You have a lovely den. I hope you can forgive our somber mood. As you must know, since you are already aware of our journeys 'halfway across the valley', we have lost friends in the attack last night."
