(Hello all. Sorry to pollute the game thread with business talk, but KingOrc has accepted my offer to join the party. Another figure is ushered into the hall by one of the king's servants. He bows deeply, his chain armor jangling slightly, and says:
"Your Majesty. Forgive my tardiness, I pray thee. I have heard thy summons, and would lend thee my strength, if it be thy will."
Rising from his bow, he stands erect and confident, though with an air of humility and deference. His dark hair is tied back into a topknot, revealing dark slanted eyes, high cheekbones and a thin beard. In some worlds, one of such exotic features might be described as 'oriental'. His clothes are of fine silk and he wears a curved sword at his hip and carries a long staff with a bladed end.

(OOC: Yeah, the party will be pretty low on healing capacity. Rain can also provide some out-of-combat healing if he learns spells like Goodberry, Cure Wounds, or Healing Spirit. But as a half-caster, he'll have limited spell slots after using Hunter's Mark for combat encounters. Best case, the major combat encounters are spaced out enough that Rain has a day in between them when he can dump all of his spell slots into Goodberry, which gives the party 10 x number of slots HP of healing for the next 24 hours.
I don't think that we need a Life domain cleric or anything. But even if no one wants to play a cleric, maybe you'd like to consider a smaller tweak, such as
I mean, we can go with the current party and just try to be careful with smart combat tactics and a willingness to disengage / retreat / regroup. In that case, I'd suggest that at least one of the new characters grab the Healer feat right from level 1.)
(OOC: I have three other major games running currently - one as a paladin, and one as a Life cleric - hence my decision to not volunteer as the party healer this time round.
If no-one wants to tweak their character, then I favor the suggestion to use alternative tactics if healing is limited.
Healer feat is a good addition, although probably not ideal on a front-line melee character, so I'll pass. For feats, I'm planning PM/Sentinel to try to add some Defender capability to my build.
Another option: if this king is so free with his gold, can we purchase healing potions? I know it's harder to heal others with potions, but it might extend our durability in combat...)

(OOC: No problem. I mean, you're playing the samurai. I built Rain to be a two-weapon fighter, but he could always leave melee to Densetsu Shinwa and just use his bow to pick off opponents from a safer distance. 😉
Honestly, I'm not even sure how KingOrc plans to lean on combat vs. role play and puzzle solving.
Regarding healing potions, after the party dropped to just 3 members, we were given / loaned the following items:
One Potion of Healing - Saralyn
Salmon Tongue Brew
2/3 dose - Saralyn
2/3 dose - Rain
2/3 dose - Ghurk
Orange Pearl of Toughness - Ghurk
White Pearl of Sound Bending - Saralyn
Teal Pearl of Manipulative Speech - Rain
I'm not sure whether that was planned or whether KingOrc was just improvising ways to power-up the party once we lost 3 of the original players. It's possible that KingOrc will want to reallocate Ghurk's items and/or start your characters with some of these other options that we did not select:
Elixir of Ether Tulip (heals minor "undead infections")
Potion of Barkskin
Night-Chain Liquid (prophetic dreams)
Strength Potion
"Medicine" Potion
Gray Pearl - lets you create shadow but at the cost of some of your sanity
Yellow Pearl - something druidish, maybe plant growth?
Dark Teal Pearl - gives you a great understanding and skill of craftsmanship.
Rolan stands. "The weed exterminator, aka the potion keeper, has a few magic pearls for you new folk to choose from. A gray pearl of shadow, that can make you create shadow and destroy light, but be warned you may lose happiness and sanity by using it too much. A Dark Teal pearl, which can make you an expert craftsman. A Red pearl, which can curse an enemy's blood, and a yellow pearl that does... something wth plants."
Well, my ghosts, though not me, are pretty formidable frontliners.
(OOC: I was mostly just teasing ZorgAlmighty. Kind of like: "If you don't want to heal Rain, maybe he'll climb a tree with his bow and leave you to go toe-to-toe with the ogre." 😉
Honestly, the original concept for Rain was as a two-weapon fighter, sprinting ahead to meet the opponent in melee. The idea was a modeled a bit on the old-fashioned images of dervishes, like https://i.pinimg.com/originals/5c/8c/e8/5c8ce8e7ba4ac6138e8880335207fbb6.jpg or https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/bgtscc/images/9/9b/Dervish.png/revision/latest?cb=20150903113718. Pretty standard ranger approach: take the TWF style at level 2 and cast Hunter's Mark, which gives him two chances to do 2d6+4 each round. Very effective striker, especially if we're fighting some big monsters. A little less so if we're battling hordes of goblins. Rain will work best with a barbarian or fighter, like Ghurk or Shinwa, on the front line with him. It's just a little scary if we have no healer to bail us out. 🤕
FYI - I've already drawn up a two different spell selections through level 5. Other than HMark, one of them has a variety of utility or area-of-control spells, like entangle and spike growth. The other assumes that we have other casters but that Rain needs to focus his magic on healing: Goodberry, Cure Wounds, Healing Spirit, and Lesser Restoration. They really only start to diverge at Level 3, so I'll see who's in the party at that point!

(OOC: Gotcha. Yeah, let's wait and see. If necessary I could sub into Banneret instead, which offers a group heal. Or even play a Druid. I just don't want to play Cleric or Paladin as I already have those running in other games. And I want something I find interesting to RP. Also, I love the dervish idea! )

(OOC: No worries. KingOrc has been pretty flexible, so presumably he's not going to kill the party with a series of tightly-packed combat encounters with no chance for a rest in between and then say, "Should have added a cleric."
Regarding the dervish, that probably gives you an idea of how Rain fights. Lots of sweeping, circular movement.
I think that I also referenced these images when I was first posting about Rain:
A tall and slender fire genasi peaks into the conversation as stands in the corner of the room, leaning against the entryway. He's dressed in delicately woven red robes and tied leather sandals, a crossbody satchel with a book strapped to it and a dagger sheathed at it's top hangs flush with his hip. A smile widens from his face as he raises a brief hand to interject "My good sirs, I believe I'm in the correct place... I am Salchar Ourada of house Ourada, and I've been summoned here in lieu of the impending storms and ongoing attacks. A pleasure." He walks into the room giving a slight bow showing courtly respect.
"Let me go put this bow in my room. No need to carry it around all day today. While I'm there, I'll see whether I can rouse Ghurk."
Rain returns to the dining hall to report that Ghurk received an urgent summons and had to depart. Rain saw Ghurk just as he was leaving, and the bugbear returned the Orange Pearl of Toughness and vial (2/3 full) of Salmon Tongue potion to Rain before he left. Before he sits down....
His clothes are of fine silk and he wears a curved sword at his hip and carries a long staff with a bladed end.
"I am called Densetsu Shinwa, sir"
A cheetah-patterned tabaxi walks quietly toward you from the table on unshod feet. He's over 6' tall and long-limbed, like other tabaxi you've seen, but he's a bit shorter and broader than some. He wears loose trousers and has some unadorned leather armor covering his torso, thighs, shins, and arms. He has a sleeveless vest over his torso, not fastened in the front. Two scabbards cross his chest, the hilts of the swords visible just over each of his shoulder.
"I am Rain Before Sun's Rising." He places his left hand on his right forearm and then turns his right hand supine for a moment. His voice is a little higher-pitched than you expected for his size, and speaks Common with an accent. "Call me Rain. My village is away to the south," he gestures south. "But I have traveled the desert for many moons now. Welcome!" Then he continues to stare, unblinkingly at Shinwa for a few moments, until Rolan speaks:
Rolan stands. "The weed exterminator, aka the potion keeper, has a few magic pearls for you new folk to choose from. A gray pearl of shadow, that can make you create shadow and destroy light, but be warned you may lose happiness and sanity by using it too much. A Dark Teal pearl, which can make you an expert craftsman. A Red pearl, which can curse an enemy's blood, and a yellow pearl that does... something wth plants."
Rain goes to Thorin and says, "King, with your permission, I'll return the Teal Pearl of Manipulative Speech and keep the Orange Pearl of Toughness now that Ghurk has gone." He hands Thorin the teal pearl and Ghurk's vial with the 2/3 dose of Salmon Tongue potion.
Before you hand over the vial, I'll say, "Actually, could we continue to keep that? We'll need it now more than ever, since our group has actually grown."

(OOC: Not sure whether you were in the room when Rain introduced himself to Shinwa.)
Rain, already having returned to his seat on the other side of the table, stands and introduces himself to Salchar. The contrast in their manners and speech is clear. Rain is polite, but he doesn't display any of Salchar's courtly graces. He speaks simply and does not follow any rules of etiquette or courtly protocol.
Before you hand over the vial, I'll say, "Actually, could we continue to keep that? We'll need it now more than ever, since our group has actually grown."
"Certainly, Saralyn. Thorin, can you help us divide the potion for the larger party? That way, we can each carry a 1/2 dose, or maybe more if you have more."Rain stands again, pulls a vial from his pouch, confirming that it is sealed and that none of the whitish-pink liquid has leaked. He takes his and Saralyn's vials of the potion to Thorin so that the dwarf can re-deivide the Salmon Tongue potion for the new, larger party.
(OOC: I would assumed I walked in after Shinwa) A small, red and gold hawk flies and perches itself on Salchar's right shoulder. Like the Fire Genasi, the hawk had tinges of red and gold sprinkled throughout a brownish-tan blanket of feathers, wrapped along its ankle, a gold clasp bracelet sits with a small ruby at its center. He gives his pleasantries to each of the party members in attendance, catching word of the aforementioned potions. "What's this about potions? I'd be obliged to say that with my magic, unless one of these items can amplify spellcasting of course, I don't think I'll need one if there aren't enough. I'm sure that would be agreeable no?"
He sits down at the table leaving enough space to cross his legs as he slings his satchel on the back of the chair.
Shinwa for the moment seems content with the gift he has received, and leaves the dividing of the potions to those who seem already familiar with them. Meanwhile, he walks over to the jaguar-like tabaxi that the king introduced - the one known as Sand - as well as the mage called Rolan, to become acquainted.
"Good morning to you, fellow servants of the King. I understand you are to accompany us, at least as far as the onyx district. Knowest thou this noble of which His Majesty speaks? Pray, how is it that they shall assist us?"
